David Suzuki weighs in
(Jan 7, 2008) Giles Slade, a political writer for the Huffington Post caught up with David Suzuki to discuss Bali, Kyoto and Canada's current stance on climate change.
It's early Friday afternoon and David Suzuki is hunched over a cellphone in the family's crowded Prius as they head south from Vancouver to catch a 3:50pm ferry to Vancouver Island. The 38 mile crossing lasts two hours.
Suzuki is heading to Victoria to take part in the B. C. Supreme court's historic recognition of the aboriginal title of the xeni gwe'tin people to their traditional lands. Afterwards he will catch the 'Powell River Queen' in Campbell River to the Suzuki cabin on Quadra Island, home to the We Wai Kai band of the Laichwiltach nation. It's has been an exhausting week for the 71 year old yet he rallies to talk about the task at hand. Time is short.
Greenliving: I'm deeply concerned about the position Canada has now taken on Kyoto...
Suzuki: Well yes! That's everyone's concern... You know the [Conservative minority] government has taken the unprecedented position of not even taking the opposition parties as official members of the delegation to Bali... It's the first time they've done that. So basically the government is really shutting them out... To me it's a shocking thing. It's a minority government, after all, and one would have thought that in a minority government what you do is you work together because you haven't been given a mandate.

David Suzuki slams Australia over attitude to global warming
MELBOURNE, Australia (AFP) Mar 03, 2004
World renowned ecologist David Suzuki lashed out here Wednesday at Australia's failure to reduce global warming, or to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas. The Canadian environmentalist, who is here for the launch of Toyota's 2004 environment and community report at the car manufacturer's new "green" corporate headquarters, said Australia is especially vulnerable to global warming and should do more to counter it. "Here you have a country (where) your federal government is saying 'we in Australia, we can't do anything about global warming... we can't do anything'," he said. "Australia is especially vulnerable. Your whole country is bordered by the ocean, sea levels are rising, half your country is desert, that desertification is going to continue. "You've got all this sunshine coming down and look, anywhere you look, where is there a solar panel anywhere? "And your government has the nerve to say we can't do anything about Kyoto." The Kyoto Protocol requires industrialised signatory countries to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, the carbon-based pollution which results from burning fossil fuels and is blamed for driving global warming.

Main Vancouver Fourth Gift to the World: David Suzuki posted by Rebecca Bollwitt at 5:00 AM on November 29, 2006 For the next seven days, the Metroblogging sites around the globe will be unveiling seven gifts their cities can share with the world - one gift a day for seven days. Metroblogging Vancouver's Fourth Gift is David Suzuki [ wiki I know this man from the clips of his TV series our science teacher used to play in elementary school. His program on the CBC, The Nature of Things is one of Canada's longest running, most award-winning and well respected but his achievements go far beyond the realm of Canadian television. David Suzuki was born in Vancouver in 1936. During the second world war, his family was forced out of the city and to a remote location in the interior of BC as a part of the Japanese Internment [ wiki ]. As David himself was 3rd generation Japanese-Canadian and could barely speak a lick of Japanese, he was also discriminated against by others in the internment camp. His family would have to stay until the war ended (3 years later), then they were forced to leave BC and head East of the Rockies - it was that or head back to Japan, a nation that Suzuki was not familiar with, Vancouver was his home. He spent the rest of his childhood years in London, Ontario and after University, Suzuki returned to Vancouver where he became a professor at the University of British Columbia in 1963. Only a few years later he would embark on a broadcasting career that would span decades, reach millions, and impact well, the planet really. He hosted various radio programs until The Nature of Things came to fruition in 1979.

Posted on February 24, 2007 By TOM BRODBECK You know, one of those big-ass, diesel-guzzling, carbon-spewing beasts? Suzuki seems confused about how pollution actually works. He claims that his trip across Canada in a diesel bus is carbon neutral, because he is going to buy carbon credits. You can buy all the carbon credits you want David. The fact is you chose to travel in an emission spewing bus and that pollution ended up in Canada. Carbon credits are nothing more than an accounting system for polluters. The wind farms are a perfect example. The companies building the wind farms are building them for the carbon credits to put against their fossil fuel businesses. Polluting the same or more, but on paper they look like good corporate citizens. click link for full story winnipegsun.com - Tom Brodbeck - Eco-icon not so green Institute for Canadian Values Make a Comment

This weblog features links and pointers to information of interest to academic science librarians. Since science librarians do many of the same things as other academic librarians, most postings will probably apply to any librarian in an academic setting. Review of David Suzuki: An Autobiography
From the other blog
This is a great book, moving and impassioned, and yet still very human. Suzuki is clearly not overly impressed with himself, not caught up with his own celebrity and this makes his memoirs so engaging. There's lots of gentle humour here, often at his own expense. He also balances the story of his public life with the story of his private life. He gives enough insight into his personal to give us a good feeling of who he is without so much that it feels intrusive or exploitative.
