He points out that the consequences of our actions are not yet clear, but that undoubtedly, future generations will see the effects of environmental stress. In his most recent television series, THE SACRED BALANCE , Suzuki discusses how human beings are intimately connected to all life processes on Earth. One of the problems many scientists attribute to human activity is global warming. A study by the JOURNAL IN GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH published in January 2002 showed that human activity has affected the Earth's surface temperature during the last 130 years, and that the shift is not over. While Earth's global temperature during the last ice age, more than 15,000 years ago, was only 3 to 5 degrees Celsius (5 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit) cooler than it is now, northern hemispheric temperature may increase by up to 3.5 degrees Celsius (6.3 degrees Fahrenheit) during the next century alone. On the Environmental News Network , a section on Global Warming and Climate Change expresses the fears of some scientists, warning:

CTC From CTV.ca Updated: Sun. Apr. 22 2007 2:51 PM ET Environment crusader David Suzuki says ordinary Canadians are far ahead of politicians when it comes to fighting climate change and that they're ready and willing to pay for it. Fresh from a cross-Canada tour in which he heard from thousands of people in more than 40 cities, Suzuki told CTV's Question Period on Sunday that Canadians are ready for a carbon tax that would punish those who waste energy and reward those who conserve. "We met over 30,000 Canadians. They recorded over 500 personal statements about what they would do if they were minister for the environment," Suzuki told Question Period co-host Craig Oliver. "And I'm telling you, they want carbon taxes."

Suzuki, David. David Suzuki: An autobiobraphy. Vancouver: Greystone, 2006. 404pp.
We live in a time when the military, industry, and medicine are all applying scientific insights, with profound social, economic, and political consequences. As a result, ignoring scientific matters is very dangerous. It's not that I believe science will ultimately provide solutions to major problems we face; I think solutions to environmental issues are much more likely to result from political, social, and economic decisions than from scientific ones. but scientists can deliver best descriptions of the state of the climate, species, pollution, deforestation, and so on, and these should inform our political and economic actions. If we don't base our long-term actions on the best scientific knowledge, then I belive we are in a great danger of succumbing to the exigencies of politics and economics.

David Suzuki turns up the heat on Harper
By John Burns In his latest book, David Suzuki: The Autobiography (Greystone Books, $34.95), the renowned Canadian scientist and media figure relates his evolution from war child to environmental activist. Beginning in grade school, he sequences his life with the kind of order and logic you'd expect to find in a university lab””which is exactly where Suzuki spent his early working years. In a recent interview at his foundation's Kitsilano office, Suzuki told the Straight about his formative experiences and showed a streak of rage over current affairs that proves he may be 70, but he's as fiery as ever. David Suzuki recaps the territory covered in 1987's Metamorphosis: Stages in a Life, which was meant to appear alongside this book as a companion volume. In both books, he describes the long-term effects his incarceration during the Second World War had on him. (Like many Japanese-Canadians, his family was forcibly moved to a residential camp in the province's interior and, after the war, Eastern Canada.) He believes he's been a striver and an outsider ever since. “I wanted to call the book The Outsider,” he said in mid-April. “I felt that way my whole life. But my daughter said, 'That's outrageous.' First of all, she said, everybody feels like an outsider. But second of all, that's not how the public perceives you and they would be insulted for you to be calling yourself an outsider when they think of you as an insider.”
