When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s, one of the highlights of my TV-viewing week was David Suzuki's excellent The Nature of Things . Each week I looked forward to yet another lucid insight into the workings of technology and the natural world. As a consequence of that long-running series, Suzuki is by far the best-known scientist in Canada. In fact, he has a considerable reputation worldwide. Half-truths man
It's sad to see how a man I once admired has recently stooped to obfuscation, half-truths and outright lies in support of the Luddite cause of stopping technological progress. He imagines that we should return to some mythical past in which Mankind lived in harmony with nature.
Of course, Man has never lived in harmony with nature. Instead he has fought it from the beginning, and rightly so. Until the capitalist revolution of the last 250 years gave us some control over Nature's depredations, the vast majority of people lived lives that were brutish, backbreaking and short. The were those who had a full belly with an occasional helping of meat.

    David Suzuki
    Origin : Vancouver, Canada
(March 24, 1936) Heroic Values : Achievement, Caring, Integrity, Perseverance, Vision, Wisdom
    Background
Suzuki is known for his commitment and dedication to educating the public about the wonders of the natural world, as well as championing the cause to conserve natural resources. He hosted several television series, the most famous of which was The Nature of Things, a program that featured documentaries on a huge variety of science topics. His work focused on promoting interest in the natural world as well as presenting energy alternatives to help build a more environmentally conscious society. Suzuki is known for describing the wonders of nature in compelling programming to make natural mysteries accessible to the public. In 1990 Suzuki co-founded the David Suzuki foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding strategies and solutions for conserving the natural world. Suzuki’s goals for the foundation were, “to find ways for society to live in balance with the natural world that sustains us." His work has designated him a world leader in sustainable ecology, and his commitment has remained to educating the public through television and broadcasting. He has publicly criticized government leaders for failing to take action to protect the environment, and his strong opinions regarding the realities of global climate change have made him a controversial and influential spokesperson of the environmental cause.

    David Suzuki, libertarian?
Conserving nature is like money in the bank
Ask folks what they value about nature and most would probably be quick to mention aesthetic and spiritual properties like beauty, serenity and peace. We hold these values dear to our hearts because they resonate with strong emotional ties. But there are other, even more pragmatic, reasons to value nature - reasons even a hard-headed economist can't deny.
As I discussed in my last column, we've lost touch with the fact that everything we have depends on nature. Without the rest of nature propping us up, we could not survive - a fact so obvious that it seems silly to point it out. The problem is, we don't behave as though this were obvious. We behave as though the economy is completely separate from the world in which we live. Industrialized society is geared entirely towards output - how many Playstations, SUVs and cans of Pepsi we can create, sell and consume. What aren't factored into the equation are the natural services needed to support this output. Why? Because nature's services are considered free.
And in a standard economic sense, they are free. Nature is the source of clean air, water and fertile soil with no strings attached. However, with six billion of us now shuffling up to nature's buffet, the "all you can eat" sign will have to come down soon or those at the back of the line - the next generation - will be left with nothing but Jell-O salad.

David Suzuki: of John Howard, Kyoto, wind power and downloading the future
Tuesday, 12 September 2006 Presenter: Steve Martin Researcher: Ruth Beran David Suzuki The ever-passionate David Suzuki discusses contemporary economic and environmental issues on the eve of his visit to Ballarat. Since the 1970s, Canadian-born geneticist Dr David Suzuki has been travelling the world trying to educate people about environmental issues, either as an educator or the voice and face of radio and television documentaries. He's coming to the University of Ballarat to give a public lecture, and if the agenda in the nation's media this morning is anything to go by, he will get a receptive audience. With newspapers, tv and radio all giving coverage to the issue of windfarms, the Kyoto Protocol and the Al Gore film opening in Australia this week, and an announcement that the Victorian State Government will give away 180,000 water saving shower heads, does he feel we're getting somewhere in getting environmental issues thought about and discussed in the mainstream?

Photo: Andrew Sheargold The Prime Minister, John Howard, has been branded an international outlaw whose decision not to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on climate change will be seen as a "crime against future generations". David Suzuki, the Canadian environmentalist, criticised the Federal Government and said the whole country should be engaged in the debate, not just politicians. "Folks are going to have to start biting the bullet and saying, 'Maybe that land would be better left for other purposes, like letting other species flourish'," he said. "But it should be done in a much greater forum, to have the whole country engaged in this process, not just a bunch of politicians knee-jerking around and trying to appease this group and deal with that group and trying to put bandages here and there." Dr Suzuki, speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra yesterday, questioned the human race's determination to ignore things such as climate change, increasing rates of extinction and genetically modified crops.

Last week I had the privilege of listening to a special lecture by Professor D. Suzuki for the Distinguished Lecturer series from the University of Wisconsin. Prof. Suzuki is a geneticist and ecologist from the University of British Columbia, and is very well know for his hosting of the television science show The Nature of Things , on the Candian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) since the late-1970s. He is also renowned for his strong support of the environmental movement and his activism toward influencing governmental policy regarding the environment. I can still remember watching his show in the 80s while living in North Dakota (as we received the CBC in our television line-up). He really did inspire a love for nature and science for me.

    BETRAYED BY THE PROPHET
Disillusioned by David Suzuki's latest pronouncements, Shawn Blore senses
    an eco-generation gap widening.
It's the doers vs. the doomsayers.
    by Shawn Blore

David Suzuki, environmentalist sans pareil, sees no value inany of this. "Vancouver's population of people and cars," he writes in his letter, "already exceeds anything that is sustainable. Our ecological footprint is huge. To talk about 'sustainable housing' for 5,000 more people is an oxymoron. It fails to recognize what sustainable means. I support you in your efforts to make an urban forest in that area."
The wound would be deep and bitter, had not the disillusionment been scabbing over for so long. Suzuki was an early idol of mine, as he was to many of my contemporaries, born as we were in the '60s and raised in the early environmental flowering of the 1970s. He was not the first Canadian environmentalist by any means, but he was the first to embrace electronic media - television in particular - and for that he became the prophet of an entire generation.
I, we, all of us Gen X-ers ate it up. When the applause finally quieted, I was one of the first to make my way to the microphone stand for a question. What can we young people do, I asked, the tremour of revelation in my voice, to avoid this great calamity? A preacher at an oldtime revival would have whisked me into the back and shown me how to make religion a part of my every waking moment. Suzuki had a different answer. By the time someone has reached university age, he said, they've been so corrupted, they've got so much invested in the system, that there's really not much hope they can change. That's why, he said, I'm focusing most of my efforts now on children. For them I think there's hope.
