21. A Brief Biography Of Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus (A.D. 69 - ?)
A brief biography of suetonius (AD 69 AD ?)the author of The Twelve Caesars .
http://www.ourcivilisation.com/smartboard/shop/suetnius/about.htm
Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus (A.D. 69 -?)
by Robert Graves (1957) The Twelve Caesars; Royal Biographies; Lives of Famous Whores; Roman Manners and Customs; The Roman Year; Roman Festivals; Roman Dress; Greek Games; Offices of State; Cicero's Republic; The Physical Defects of Mankind; Methods of Reckoning Time; An Essay on Nature; Greek Objurgations; Grammatical Problems; Critical Signs Used in Books . But apart from fragments of his Illustrious Writers , which include short biographies of Virgil, Horace, and Lucan, the only extant book is The Twelve Caesars , the most fascinating and richest of all Latin histories. Suetonius was fortunate in having ready access to the Imperial and Senatorial archives and to a great body of contemporary memoirs and public documents, and in having himself lived nearly thirty years under the Caesars. Much of his information about Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero comes from eye-witnesses of the events described. Apparently he took care to check facts wherever possible, and often quotes conflicting evidence without bias, which was not the habit of Tacitus or other later historians. If his credulousness about omens and prodigies is discounted, he seems trustworthy enough, his only prejudice being in favour of firm mild rule, with a regard for the human decencies. As the nineteenth-century Cambridge historian George Long wrote: His language is very brief and precise, sometimes obscure, without any affectation or ornament. He certainly tells a prodigious number of scandalous anecdotes about the Caesars, but there was plenty to tell about them; and if he did not choose to suppress those anecdotes which he believed to be true, that is no imputation on his veracity. As a great collection of facts of all kinds, his work on the Caesars is invaluable...

Aside from the works of the authors Josephus Flavius (Antiquities of the Jews, 18.63-64) and Tacitus (Annals, 15.44), Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus (Suetonius, Lives, Nero, 16), is often listed chronologically as the third independent citation in the evolution of christian ecclesiastical history. In a separate review of The Evolution of Christs and Christianities by Jay Raskin (2006) these above three independent citations are seriously questioned. Raskin points out that the article Ken Olson, "Eusebius and the Testimonium Flavianum," (Catholic Biblical Quarterly, 61 (1999): 305-322) effectively argues that Eusebius in the fourth century has interpolated into Josephus. Raskin then tries to establish "that the early references to Christianity found in the historians Tacitus and Suetonius, are likely from Eusebius Our thesis, that Constantine Invented Christianity , obviously supported by these above two separate textual criticisms, is capable of being refuted (either in whole or in part) by the provision of the appropriate scientific and/or archeological citations. To-date there have been no refutations, however an exceptions index of frequently mentioned citations has been prepared.

Contents Index Suetonius on Nero's Suicide Finally, when his companions unanimously insisted on his trying to escape from the miserable fate threatening him, he ordered them to dig a grave at once, and then collect any pieces of marble that they could find and fetch wood and water for the disposal of the corps. As they bustled about obediently he muttered through his tears: "Dead! And so great an artist!" A runner brought him a letter from Phaon. Nero tore it from the man's hands and read that, having been declared a public enemy by the Senate, he would be punished in 'ancient style' when arrested. He asked what 'ancient style' meant, and learned that the executioners stripped their victim naked, thrust his head into a wooden fork, and then flogged him to death with sticks. In terror he snatched up the two daggers which he brought along and tried their points; but threw them down again, protesting that the final hour had not yet come. They laid Nero on his pyre, dressed in gold-embroidered white robes which he had worn on 1 January. The funeral cost 2,000 gold pieces. Ecloge and Alexandria, his old nurses, helped Acte, his mistress, to carry the remains to the Pincian Hill, which can be seen form the Campus Martius. Suetonius: Nero, 49, 50

GAIUS SUETONIUS PAULINUS (1st century A.D.), Roman general. In 42, during the reign of Claudius , he put down a revolt in Mauretania , and was the first of the Romans to cross the Atlas range. He subsequently wrote an account of his experiences. From 59-62 he commanded in Britain , and, after a severe defeat, finally crushed the Iceni under Boadicea (Boudicca). A complaint having been made to the emperor that he was needlessly protracting hostilities, he was recalled, but he was consul (for the second time) in 66. During the civil war he fought on the side of Otho against Vitellius, and obtained a considerable success against Aulus Caecina Alienus (one of the Vitellian generals) near Cremona , but did not follow it up. When Caecina had been joined by Fabius Valens , Paulinus advised his colleagues not to risk a decisive battle, but his advice was disregarded, and Otho (q.v.) was utterly defeated at Bedriacum. After Vitellius had been proclaimed emperor, Paulinus asserted that it was in consequence of his own treachery that Otho's army had been defeated. Vitellius pretended to believe this, and eventually pardoned Paulinus, after which nothing further is heard of him. See Dio Cassius lxii. 7-12; Tacitus

OFFICER, CHARLES MYLES (1827-1904) and SUETONIUS HENRY (1830-1883), pastoralists, were born at Hall Green, New Norfolk, Van Diemen's Land, sons of Robert Officer , and his wife Jamima, n©e Patterson. Charles was born on 14 July 1827 and Suetonius on 4 January 1830; they moved with the family to Hobart Town in 1835 and attended local schools until 1841 when they went to Scotland to the Edinburgh Academy. Charles had begun his medical studies and Suetonius had entered the Military Academy when in 1844 they were recalled to Van Diemen's Land. Charles was trained in pastoral pursuits in the Bothwell district and for a time grew hops at New Norfolk. In 1848 he moved to the Wimmera in the Port Phillip District to his father's run, Mount Talbot, managed by his eldest brother Robert. In 1852 Charles went to the goldfields where he had little luck but enjoyed himself, and in 1854 with Suetonius took over the management of Mount Talbot. The run of 100 sq. miles (259 km²) was some of the best merino country in Victoria, with 15,000 sheep and 500 cattle. In 1856 the brothers took over the 25,000-acre (10,117 ha) Lingmer station acquired by their father in 1849. By 1859 they were able to buy Mount Talbot and continued as partners, though Suetonius soon went north to manage their Riverina holdings.

Above all others, [Caesar] loved Servilia, who was the mother of Marcus Brutus, and in his first consulship he bought for her a pearl costing six million sesterces. During the civil war, he acquired some fine estates for her in a public auction at a nominal price and when some expressed their surprise at the low figure, Cicero quipped: “It’s a better bargain than you think, for he got a third off” [alternate meaning: “he seduced Tertia”]. And in fact it was thought that Servilia was pimping her own daughter Tertia to Caesar.

Suetonius for Kids - an ancient Roman historian
Suetonius
Suetonius lived just a little later than Seneca , during the Flavian emperors and then into the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian . He lived at the same time as the younger Pliny , and was a friend of his. He was not himself much involved with politics, and did not come from one of the leading families of the Empire. He worked at court, though, apparently in charge of keeping records for the emperors of what they had done and what the emperors who came before them had done. Because of his position, Suetonius was able to know more history than most people, and he decided to share that knowledge by writing biographies of all the Roman Emperors up to his own time, from Julius Caesar to Domitian . Not all of Suetonius' biographies survived, but most of them did. They are, along with the histories of Tacitus , our most important sources of information about the early Roman emperors. This scene from "I, Claudius" shows us one scene that Suetonius wrote about in his Histories. The dancer is the emperor Caligula , and the man who stutters is his uncle Claudius
