Abstract This paper aims to offer an insight into the 'world of tourism'. It opens with a selective historical introduction which gives an overview of the development of the phenomenon up to the mass international tourism of the present day as seen from western experience. Three historical periods form a framework for the foundation of modern international tourism. It is suggested that a number of events during these periods are significant in that they prepare the way for the phenomenal growth of tourism today. The paper then reviews the literature from many areas and disciplines. With few dissenters, tourism is seen to be an interdisciplinary field of study. Whilst it has only recently attracted the attention of the academic, it has now become fertile ground for some social scientists, for example, geographers, sociologists, economists, and anthropologists. However, the field of study remains under researched, especially in the areas of political science and international politics (Matthews 1975; Richter 1983; Klosters 1984; Stock 1987; Richter 1989; Hall 1994). Historical Background Tourism as a practice, as well as travel for specifically educational purposes, has a very long history. Holloway (1985:22) notes that although the term tourism dates from the early 19th century, the activity occurred as early as 776BC when the Greeks hosted the first Olympic Games. Others, for example Lickorish and Jenkins (1997:11) place prehistory tourism as being from English medieval times to the early 17th Century. Prior to this time, it seems reasonable to assume that explorers, pilgrims and traders were the ancestors of today's tourists, before the division of the world into recognisable political units.

thaifarang@hotmail.co.uk Thailand Fever by Chris Pirazzi and Vitada Vasant This book reads like some of those widely published American self-help books who seek to boil the whole issue down to a few populist sociological ideas (eg. such books as Men are from Mars and women are from Venus or How to make friends and influence people
In this case the key theme of the book is that Westerners value independence mostly and Thais value generosity mostly. Everything that can go wrong within a Thai-Farang relationship is analysed within these parameters. Naturally, this leads to some peculiar argumentation. For example, Westerners are repulsed by prostitution because it goes against the notion of independence, the female's right to choose her mate. Prostitutes are considered as outcasts in Western society because they are not independent. Also a westerner feels uncomfortable with the Thai notion of sharing your wealth with your family as it goes against his ideas about independence. Western parents are also proud of their children if they are rude or abusive to authority figures such as teachers as it shows that they have been brought up right - they are showing independence! That section is enough to scare away any Thai lady I think - Truly Ting Tong in the Thai value system.) So the book does over-simplify things.

Monsoon Country by Pira Sudham The novel for which Pira Sudham was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature Much like Pira's own life, the tale follows a poor farmer's son from the North-East (Esarn) to Bangkok and as an overseas student in England. This novel covers a period of immense change in Thailand, the clash of Western and Thai values, the student movement and the military repression of the 1970's. Paperback

Bookazine Book Review: Tales of Thailand by Lang Reid This week’s book review is another from the hand of Pira Sudham, a man who has not forgotten his roots in Esarn. Tales of Thailand (ISBN974-89628-5-7) was one of his earlier books, but in the latest reprint he has extensively re-written and even added chapters. It is claimed that he re-wrote this book as a present to himself on his 60th birthday this year. The first tale of the Old Man and the Boy takes you straight into the despair that can be Esarn. The Moonmouth Dam, the misappropriation of lands, the physical brutality wreaked upon the displaced farmers and their families, all contrasted against the acceptance of their lot as part of their belief in karma. It is not surprising that the farang mind is shocked by such treatment of Thais by other Thais. That a Thai, such as Pira Sudham, would write about this is even more amazing. And perhaps also brave. In the story about the young army officer who falls from grace after influential classmates become envious highlights some of the worst parts of Thai versus Thai society. “The rank of Leader was stripped from me and I was placed on the bottom rung of the honour list. This was the first time I was aware of how one could lose honour at the wave of a hand. What are honour and position and name when a mere stranger or an adversary could take them away with the wave of a hand?”

Golf Love: In Afghanistan and More
by Jamie Rhein Oct 15th 2007 @ 2:19PM Thai writer Pira Sudham wrote a short story once about a farmer who lost his rice farm to a golf course developer because he didn't understand the terms of the contract. I can't remember which book the story is in, but for anyone interested in understanding the lives of Thai farmers, Pira Sudham is an excellent place to start. Monsoon Country is the novel that marked his literary success. After reading Sudham's story, one of my students at the time, a 10th grader at the Singapore American School, said that he would never look at golf courses in the same way. When a guy I once worked with said that he loves golf courses in Asia because they have the best views, I almost choked and kept myself from shouting out, "Haven't you ever read Pira Sudham?" However, there is one golf course in Asia that I just read about in a New York Times article by Kirk Semple , that I so want to succeed. In Kabul, Afghanistan, one man started the Kabul Golf Course three years ago in anticipation of its success. The golf course business has not gone as well as he had hoped for, but he refuses to hang up his clubs for good. The course is a symbol to him that things will get better in his country. The description of the currently grassless golf course reminded me of a golf course I went to in

Travel guides and recommendations, news paper articles, even novels, are available in English or German language in a great amount. Most of them are written by non-Asian writers and refer to cultural and historical, economical and ecological, leisure or sportive themes, but scarcely to the thought and the feeling of a Thai. Only a native Thai is able to transmit these complexes. Pira Sudham is like a double good luck - not only for Thailand and its people, but also for all persons who are interested in Thailand and its people. He writes in English.
His first book, Siamese Drama, a collection of short stories, appeared in 1983, followed by People of Esarn 1987. In 1988, his first novel, Monsoon Country was published, Tales of Thailand 1990, The Force of Karma (Destiny) in 2002.
People of Esarn
"Pira Sudham brings into the light lives of some of the ordinary people who live in obscurity in remote villages. With the skill and craftsmanship of a sensitive writer, he conveys the inner voices of his subjects regardless of how illiterate, timid and insignificant they seem in their daily lives. Their simplicity and sensitivity come through his direct and clear prose, yet moving and touching. He writes with understanding and compassion for his people. Foreign writers writing about the Thai people look at Thailand from the ‚outside', but Pira Sudham writes about his people and country as seen from the ‚inside'. This is one of the things that makes them so fascinating."
