I have just received a copy of the marriage certificate for my husbands
elusive grandfather James Suckling to Lottie Constant. James was 27 when he
married on 22.10.1915 at Wandworth Register Office - a private in the Border
Regiment. He gave the sme residential address as his bride 7 Barmore St
Battersea. James was killed in action on the 22nd April 1918 when my mother
in law was 4 months old. The CWGC site gives no next of kin. I wonder if anyone has knowledge of John Elvy Suckling a general labourer and was deceased by 1915 when his son James married Lottie. I suspect Elvy is perhaps a maternal surname. I have 2 references via IGI that show a birth of a John Suckling to John Suckling and Jemima ELVEY on 14.03.1814 at Congham, Norfolk. I also have a John Elvey Suckling born to the same couple at Grimston, Norfolk, in about 1818. A quick search of Free BMD gave me the following marraige DEC 1/4 1901 JOHN ELVY SUCKLING WANDWORTH 1d 1073 ... could be James brother or coceivably

    Suckling, Sir John
Suckling, Sir John, Cavalier poets . He was educated at Cambridge and Gray's Inn. An accomplished gallant, he was given to all the extravagances of the court of Charles I. He was a prolific lover, a sparkling wit, and an excessive gamester. The antiquary John Aubrey credits him with having invented the game of cribbage. Subjected to a humiliating defeat in Charles I's Scottish campaign of 1639, he was said to be more fit for the boudoir than the battlefield. An ardent royalist, he took part in the plot to rescue (1641) Thomas Wentworth, earl of Strafford , from the Tower of London and to secure aid for Charles from the French. On the failure of these endeavors Suckling fled to France, where, it is conjectured, being unable to face poverty, he was driven to suicide. After his death appeared
