The Mark Of Cain Notes Sadly, for my twenty bucks a month, I have had to learn to make certain that strange, arbitrary edits aren't made. That's OK. Ted had a long history of suffering the same abuse. He used to tell Gold at Galaxy: STET! and Gold would never change the line or word in question. Sadly, nobody knows what "STET" means anymore (except crossword puzzle freaks). So I always send a: " NOTE TO EDITOR : I defer to Mr. Sturgeon herein in terming science fiction lowercase 'sf' and not, as your spellchecker might demand as did mine 'SF' UPPERCASE. Please respect him in this, as have I. Similarly, I CHOSE XXth and NOT 20th for a reason. Thanks. " Sometimes, it actually works. But to read Steinbeck - brilliant though our Nobel Laureate might be - after reading Sturgeon is to nosh on a sawdust sandwich after feasting on Cordon Bleu.

Theodore Sturgeon (1918-1985) is a pivotal piece of the American literary landscape. Author of over 200 short stories, several novels (including More Than Human and Godbody ), and of some of the most influential episodes of the original Star Trek series, Mr. Sturgeon is also remembered today for Sturgeon’s Law. The law says that 90% of Science Fiction is crap - because 90% of everything is crap. He’s remembered for much more, of course; far too much to list here. Millennium (SF Masterworks 28), 233 pages
Order this book One of the key figures of science fiction's so-called Golden Age, Theodore Sturgeon stands out from his contemporaries both in the literary quality of his writing and his focus on creating strong, complex characters as well as fast-paced plots. He has been an influence on writers as diverse as Samuel Delany and Ray Bradbury, and serves as a continuing source of inspiration to SF's younger generation. His work fell out of print following his death in 1985, but recent years have seen complete reissues of his short story collections, and a number of reprintings of his novelsincluding this one, from Millenium's SF Masterworks series.
Sturgeon is best-known as a short story writer, and More than Human is definitely a short story writer's novel. It's constructed as three separate novelettes (the central one, "Baby is Three", was originally published in Galaxy ) which together link up to tell a larger tale. This structure echoes the novel's theme: the creation and evolution of a Gestalt, a single being composed of disparate parts that are incomplete alone but together form a whole.

Theodore Sturgeon
Introduction by Steve Rasnic Tem
Trade paperback; ISBN: 1-933618-00-0 Signed hardcover; ISBN: 1-933618-01-9 Published: July 2006 Theodore Sturgeon' dark and foreboding look at the vampire myth was an instant classic when originally published in 1956. When George Smith is arrested for assaulting a senior officer, a military psychiatrist is assigned to the case. The secret of George's past is unearthed, and a history of blood lust and murder. Innovatively told through letters, interviews, and traditional narrative, Some of Your Blood effectively portrays the tragic upbringing of George Smith to his attempts at a stable life and the great love of his life to his inevitable downfall. Millipede Press is proud to present this masterpiece of macabre literature in a brand new edition. Special features of this edition:
  • New design with entirely reset text. New essay by Steve Rasnic Tem, noted critic and writer. Sewn binding for extra durability. Includes a related short story by Theodore Sturgeon, "Bright Segment"

AUTHOR,
AUTHOR
THEODORE STURGEON
Distinguished by an elfin quality that defies analysis and imitation, the stories of Theodore Sturgeon have, over the past decade, made an important and irreplaceable contribution to modern fantasy. Whether writing an outstanding science-fiction tale such as "Microcosmic God" or spine-chilling fantasy as in "It", Sturgeon's tales breathe with this atmosphere that only he can create. Some years ago, when a few stories appeared under the names of E. Waldo Hunter and E. Hunter Waldo, readers made haste to write to the editor, identifying them as Sturgeon's work. Ted Sturgeon's tales have been widely anthologized and his story, "Bianca's Hands", won the Amalgamated Press Literary Prize in England after appearing in the British ARGOSY. Unlisted in the bibliography are about forty stories sold to the Mc Clure Newspaper syndicate in 1938 and 1939. Ted is currently living in New York, where he is employed by TIME, INC. And now, we'll let Ted Sturgeon take over himself. I was born on Staten Island, which is populated mostly by the dead and people from Brooklyn. (So help me, to this day you can get lost in the woods over there, tho it's inside New York City limits.) This birth occurred on 2/26/18, according to the records. I went for years to a veddy social Staten Island private school, two weeks to a public school, thence to Philadelphia where I was two weeks in the fifth grade and got shoved into the sixth. This one I completed, and then went to a boarding school in Pennsylvania where in a year I learned how to smoke, drink, gamble, swear and swim. After six weeks in the eighth grade in summer school, I was dumped into an enormous education factory in Philadelphia at the age of twelve. I weighed 95 pounds and was utterly bewildered, but anyway, I was a high school student. I was a High school student for six solid years. I never took a subject I didn't flunk at one time or another. Like someone named Robin English, I was released. That was in '36.

Home REVIEW: To Marry Medusa by Theodore Sturgeon REVIEW SUMMARY : Another great one from the master
MY RATING BRIEF SYNOPSIS : An alien hive mind tries to conquer Earth MY REVIEW
PROS : Superb writing style; lean, descriptive prose.
CONS : A smidgen more esoteric than his other stuff
BOTTOM LINE : A great quick read and a fantastic classic I love Theodore Sturgeon's writing. He is absolutely unmatched for his taut literary style and engaging classic plots. Case in point: To Marry Medusa (originally titled The Cosmic Rape When down-and-out drunk Dan Gurlick eats a throw-away hamburger he scrounged from a garbage pail, he has no idea that he is to become the unwitting vehicle for an alien invasion. The hive mind known as Medusa has extended her reach to Earth via a raisin-like spore that winds up in Harry's free meal. The hive is surprised to learn that humans are not already a collective, so it uses Harry to "re-unite" humanity into a common gestalt so it can be easily conquered and brought into the collective. A simple plot, yes, but a terrific read. The plot is structured so the main story thread is given in alternating chapters. Each of the in-between chapters depicts one of a handful of minor characters. Sturgeon's consummate skill as a writer is immediately evident in these character portrayals as well as his lean prose, plot development and stylish verbiage. The way he describes things proves the power of the written word. And at a lean 153 pages, this book is a fine example of what science fiction is supposed to be: simultaneously plot- and character-driven and completely devoid of fluff. This is a fantastic classic.

Selected Stories by Theodore Sturgeon
(Vintage, $14.00, 439 pages, paperback; November 2000.) Theodore Sturgeon (1918-1985) was one of the great craftsmen of science fiction's pulp era. Like so many of his contemporaries, he excelled at the short story, novelette and novella, yet had difficulties with the novel form; his most famous "novel", More Than Human (1953), is an uneasy fixup of three novelettes that are individually excellent. In many of his stories he conformed to the pulp medium, writing tales that might just as well have been produced by any of the forgotten host who churned away earnestly for magazines that have often enough themselves been forgotten. But ever and again Sturgeon transcended the medium entirely to produce stories that could probably have sat more comfortably in slicks like The New Yorker . Quite why his pulp editors published these is something of a mystery, but publish them they did and in so doing they contributed to the process whereby fantasy/sf, pulling itself up by its own bootstraps, established itself as a literary form rather than an adventure genre. Any book of Sturgeon's work that is called Selected Stories and that comes from a mainstream publisher is therefore exceedingly welcome: it is long past time that he was recognized as, at his best, a major contributor to the American short story of the 20th century who just happened to work with sf, fantasy and horror. And initially this compilation looks the part, containing 13 stories of which most are long and two are very long. There are some very fine stories here make no mistake about that but there are also some very fine stories that are

In 1923, his parents separated, with his father leaving home; they eventually divorced. His mother married William D. Sturgeon in 1935, and Waldo legally changed his name to Theodore Hamilton Sturgeon. Accounts of how he came to be a writer vary considerably, from the fantastic (he tried writing only after giving up on becoming a circus acrobat) to the mundane (he needed money), but he first tried his hand at seamanship, attending Pennsylvania State Nautical School for one term in 1935 and working as a seaman from 1935 to 1938. ...
