Theodore Sturgeon
by Jacqueline Lichtenberg The first short story of Ted Sturgeon's that engraved his byline on my mind was titled "Bianca's Hands." That short story contained a penetrating image that, for me, defined both the genre of horror and the reasons why people are so fascinated by this genre. The image was of detached hands chasing the protagonist around her house. It gave me nightmares. It also defined for me why I don't like horror, but that's another story. Having taken notice of Theodore Sturgeon's writing, I studied it, because even then I wanted to be a professional science fiction writer. And so I came to understand how Ted handled various themes, most particularly alien reproduction. In the course of this, I ran across some interview or article, I forget now, where Ted's concept of the Q with the arrow through it, which represents his own personal, primary philosophical stance on how to live the best possible life, was explained in some detail. In brief, it is simply, "Ask The Next Question". That's harder than it sounds, for it requires that you be able to penetrate the walls that your cultural conditioning builds inside your mind, compartmentalizing it. Formulating the next question is very hard. It means you must never stop thinking, never take things at face value, never accept the illusion that you really understand everthing about a subject, never accept any theory as final.

Sturgeon's son Robin selected the finalists. The winner and two runners-up will be chosen from the finalist list by a committee. The award will be presented at a dinner held at the University of Kansas on July 9, 1999 along with the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for the Best SF Novel of the Year and the 1999 inductions into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame inductions are presented by the Kansas City Science Fiction and Fantasy Society in association with the Center for the Study of Science Fiction. The Award dinner will be followed by the two-day Campbell Conference, which this year will discuss "Science Fiction on Television."

    Sturgeon's Law
Sturgeon's Law /prov./ "Ninety percent of everything is crap". Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to `crap'. Compare Hanlon's Razor Ninety-Ninety Rule . Though this maxim originated in SF fandom, most hackers recognize it and are all too aware of its truth. Return to Cool Jargon of the Day

    Jessica Amanda Salmonson
Has he really been gone so many years? I see him still, sitting across from me on the floor in a hallway, our legs touching from opposite walls, his devil-whiskered face beaming with life. Surely this image of Ted Sturgeon would not be this clear in my memory if he were gone so long. Godbody More than Human. More than Human reminds me most of a truly nutty New Age manual called Starchildren I won't mention the completely Killdozer is a man vs. machine fable that reads like a good children's book in execution spinning out every possible variation of the situation, but of only the most idle interest to any sophisticated reader. The unconventional tale of an angst-ridden vampire in Some of Your Blood as Venus Plus X which is actually a very bad novel but prefigures such good ones as Ursula LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness. Theodore Sturgeon (26 February, 1918 to 8 May, 1985) is considered to be one of the best writers to come out of the 'Golden Age' of science fiction , along with other such greats as Asimov , Bradbury, and Heinlein. His writing deals with the human condition, more specifically with the many different forms that love takes and the ways in which these are expressed, or not expressed. Considered to be iconoclastic and controversial at the time they were written, Sturgeon's stories illustrated the failings of many of societies' more established views on religion , sexuality, and ethics He is also known for formulating Sturgeon's Law: Ninety percent of everything is crud Sturgeon was originally named EH Waldo, but this name was changed in early adolescence when his mother re-married. Although many libraries list 'Theodore Sturgeon' as a pen name for EH Waldo, Sturgeon is his legal name.

There's Lone, the simpleton who can hear other people's thoughts and make a man blow his brains out just by looking at him. There's Janie, who moves things without touching them, and there are the teleporting twins, who can travel ten feet or ten miles. There's Baby, who invented an antigravity engine while still in the cradle, and Gerry, who has everything it takes to run the world except for a conscience. Separately, they are talented freaks. Together they compose a single organism that may represent the next step in evolution, and the final chapter in the history of the human race. Somewhere in this world there are six people who together can do anything. Some day, perhaps tomorrow, they will put their power to work and the world will be transformed. In the meantime they are waiting quietly. They look and often behave like people you know. But with a difference: they think of themselves as "I" not "we" because in a curious way they are One. That is the source of their strength. This is the story of how they met, and what they became...and what they intend to do.

More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon is number 10 on my all-time top 10 favourite science fiction stories . It is, quite simply, one of the best and most original science fiction novels of all time. It centers around the concept of a Gestalt species as the next step in evolution for humanity and was, as far as I know, the first ever to do so. Summary: This often neglected classic simply must be experienced to be understood. There is no other story in existence that deals with these themes as powerfully and realistically as More Than Human SOON and there are thousands Cam Says: 5/5 - Must Read Tags: evolution gestalt
