He sold his first story in to the newspaper McClure's Syndicate, which bought much of his early (non-fantastic) work; his first genre appearance was "Ether Breather" in Astounding Science Fiction a year later. At first he wrote mainly short stories, primarily for genre magazines such as Astounding and Unknown , but also for general-interest publications such as Argosy Magazine . He used the pen name "E. (The Synthetic Man) and Venus Plus X enhanced his reputation. After suffering a famous case of writer's block for several years during the 1960's, he returned to writing circa 1970 to the delight of his admirers, producing a number of his best short stories during this period. Theodore Sturgeon died on May 8, 1985 after a distinguished literary career, beloved by most who knew him, fans and fellow writers alike. His artistically flawed but spiritually triumphant novel Godbody was released after his death to great acclaim. Almost from the beginning of his career, the theme of Sturgeon's best writing was love, not specifically sexual passion but human love in all its complexity. It was a byword, even a cliché in science fiction circles that Sturgeon was the writer who understood love: in reaction to this reputation, Sturgeon eventually went so far as to write a short story whose protagonist was a writer who was supposed to understand love, though how much of the story might be autobiograpical is hard to say. Besides his championing of human love, Sturgeon is well known for Sturgeon's Law, pronounced in reply to a critic who opined that 90% (or was it 95%?) of science fiction was crap, if "crap" was the word used. 90% of

  • I repeat Sturgeon's Revelation, which was wrung out of me after twenty years of wearying defense of science fiction against attacks of people who used the worst examples of the field for ammunition, and whose conclusion was that ninety percent of it is crud.
The Revelation: Ninety percent of everything is crud.
Corollary 1: The existence of immense quantities of trash in science fiction is admitted and it is regrettable; but it is no more unnatural than the existence of trash anywhere.
Corollary 2: The best science fiction is as good as the best fiction in any field.
    • Venture Science Fiction (March 1958) The original expression of this has often been declared to have been " Sure, ninety percent of science fiction is crud. That's because ninety percent of everything is crud. " According to Philip Klass Sturgeon made the remark during a talk at New York University around 1951. It has also commonly appeared in variant forms such as " Ninety percent of everything is crap " and is often referred to as " Sturgeon's Law " — though he himself gave that title to another phrase.

From SCIFIPEDIA Writer Theodore Sturgeon February 26 May 8 ) is best known for his compelling stories of love and hate in the science fiction genre. He was born Edward Hamilton Waldo in Staten Island New York , but changed his name when his mother married a man named William Sturgeon. He started out writing mimetic stories for McClure's Syndicate in the thirties, but he soon began selling to Astounding and other SF magazines. He gained a reputation with such stories as "Killdozer," "Microcosmic God," and the horrific "Bianca's Hands." In , he published "The World Well Lost," one of the first SF stories to deal seriously and positively with homosexuality. By today's standards it is tame and perhaps somewhat condescending, but then it was so shocking that many readers erroneously assumed that its author had to be gay. Sturgeon was mainly a short story writer (the continuing publication of his collected stories by North Atlantic Books has reached ten volumes), but he also wrote

got it, and in whose company he wished to be. More Than Human tackles the immense question, not of why we're here or where we came from, but of where we could end up. It posits a new phase of evolution that may not strictly be realistic under what we currently understand from science. It's hard to conceive of the kind of selection pressures necessary to produce something like Homo gestalt , and indeed, Sturgeon's story here obscures the issue of speciation and development entirely. (I wonder how Sturgeon would tackle this story today, after a refresher in the latest evo-devo.) But for speculative fiction, it's a splendid premise and one which Sturgeon employs in the exploration of what he believes is humanity's most singular and defining trait: that we are moral and ethical beings capable of looking outside of ourselves to consider the greater good. Tellingly, the "more"-than-human beings who inhabit this novel are something quite less than human as well. In the story, somehow these freaks of nature exist — people with advanced telepathic and telekinetic abilities, who are yet virtual ciphers on their own, unable to function at full strength unless they group together to form their gestalt. Sturgeon is mainly interested in how they survive and adapt in a world which, in theory, they could probably rule with ease. (As a skeptic who loves to do my bit of debunking now and then, I always ask people who tell me they have paranormal powers, "So why aren't you a millionaire?") On their own, the problem is acute. They lack full control of their abilities, and even seem simple-minded or flat-out retarded, incapable of the most basic functions. Together, they pool their strengths. But naturally, with power comes that bewildering mix of arrogance and ennui. The individuals in a

The Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award
The Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for the best short science fiction of the year was established in 1987 by James Gunn, Director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction at KU, and the heirs of Theodore Sturgeon, including his widow Jayne Sturgeon and Sturgeon's children, as an appropriate memorial to one of the great short-story writers in a field distinguished by its short fiction. Sturgeon, born in 1918, was closely identified with the Golden Age of science fiction, 1939-1950, and is often mentioned as one of the four writers who helped establish that age. The others were Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, and A. E. van Vogt; all four had their first SF stories published in 1939. In addition to fiction (his best-known novel is the classic, More Than Human ), Sturgeon also wrote book reviews, poetry, screenplays, radio plays, and television plays, including two classic teleplays for the original Star Trek . He was a popular lecturer and teacher, and was a regular visiting writer at the
