Wind energy expert speaks tonight from the UW media relations office
An international expert on wind energy will speak about the rapidly growing source of electricity in a public lecture tonight. It's hosted by a group of UW students working on a wind turbine demonstration project for the campus Sustainable Technology Education Project , or STEP. Paul Gipe, who has lectured widely in North America, Europe and South Pacific, will deliver his talk beginning at 8 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre. Admission is free. Gipe will give a broad overview of wind energy development around the world, including the technology employed in both large and small wind turbines, environmental costs and benefits of wind energy, aesthetic design of wind turbines and wind power plants, and community wind development. The World Renewable Energy Congress honoured Gipe as a pioneer in 1998 and the American Wind Energy Association named him as the industry's "Person of the Year" in 1988.

To honour Sandy's considerable achievement in making this prestigious shortlist, a photo opportunity was arranged for Thursday, September 20, 2001 at Sleeman's Brewery in Guelph. For this opportunity we are grateful to Cathy Voight, Jenny Kitson and Peter A. Authors confirmed as of January 23/08: (listed alphabetically) Gail Anderson-Dargatz: Her ability to transform pieces of her own life and her own environment into rivetingly readable novels has made Gail a Canadian literary superstar. Her first two novels, The Cure For Death by Lightning and A Recipe For Bees , were both international bestsellers and Giller Prize nominees. Her fourth and latest novel, Turtle Valley , was inspired by the 1998 forest fire that threatened to engulf her hometown of Salmon Arm in BC's Shuswap region. (

Notes from a Small Island (March 1998), Bill Bryson read 15.12.02 This book chronicles Bryson's farewell trip around England before he returned to his native Midwestern USA, after having lived and worked on the "small island" for almost two decades. I fully expected to enjoy and appreciate this book, especially because I like to think that I have a fairly keen understanding of what it is about England that so intrigues Americans (who are far more enamoured of all things British than say, Canadians are), and why. But I didn't enjoy it hardly at all. There were moments that stirred a bit of a chuckle out of me, but overall, I found Bryson to be over the top, excessive, exaggerated in both his praise and damnation of various aspects of English culture and landscape. His prose is clunky, overbearing, and devoid of those subtle nuances that are often peculiar to good travel literature, the ones that, if successfully employed, provide enough detail to tantalise and keep you coming back for more, but don't smack you in the face when you do.
