Adria Vasil
When the world’s environmental woes get you down, turn to Ecoholic. Adria Vasil’s run-away, national best-seller has been hailed as the most informed resource for practical tips and products that help you do your part for the earth. “Everything you need to know to make green, non-toxic, earth-friendly consumer choices – and to be a bang-up planetary citizen.” Based on the popular and authorative “Ecoholic” column that appears weekly in NOW, Ecoholic ,the book, is a cheeky and eye-opening guide to all of life’s greenest predicaments. “This book is for people who want to do something to lighten their impact on the planet” – David Suzuki
Katherine Ashenburg
We live in a deodorized world where germophobes shake hands with their elbows and where sales of hand sanitizers are skyrocketing. The Dirt on Clean: An Unsanitized History, Katherine Ashenburg’s latest book, takes us on a historic and cultural journey that is by turns intriguing, humorous, startling – and not always for the squeamish. Filled with amusing quotations and stories from the great bathers of history, Ashenburg searches for clean and dirty in plague-ridden streets, medieval steam baths, castles and tenements, and in bathrooms of every description. She reveals the bizarre perscriptions of history’s doctors as well as the hygienic peccadilloes of kings, mistresses, monks and ordinary citizens, and guides us through the twists and turns to our own understanding of clean.

Upcoming Workshops in Toronto for Fall 2007
The Writers' Trust of Canada has announced a series of writing workshops for Fall 2007 in Toronto MICHEL BASILIˆRES
"Grant Writing for Writers"
North York Central Library For both professional and emerging writers, a step-by step walk through of how to prepare your application for literature grants. Michel will guide you through the process, showing you how to avoid the most common mistakes, You'll learn what jurors want to see, and what will make them reject an application on sight. We will cover all levels of Government funding ( Toronto Ontario , and Canada councils), using their official forms. By the end of the workshop, you will understand what happens to your application once it leaves your hands until the letters of acceptance are mailed out.
RANDY BOYAGODA
Toronto Public Library Beaches Branch All good writing proceeds from the distinctiveness and strength of the writer's voice. What does it mean to have a distinctive and strong writer's voice? Read the greats and you'll know. A distinctive voice comes from a constant engagement with great writing combined with a lively eye and ear for the world around you. One of these elements, without the other, cannot sustain a story for very long. We find such integration in the greats: you'll never mistake Hemingway for Faulkner, Tolstoy for Dostoevsky, Munro for Gallant. In this workshop, we will read and discuss a series of great writers on the common topic of childhood, with the ambition of determining what goes into revealing the world in a fresh and disarming way. We'll focus on what choices each writer makes in the act of storytelling, and why or why not these choices appeal to your own emerging sensibility as a writer.

PLANET REESE
By Cordelia Strube
The problem with liberals is that they're no fun at parties. There are various reasons for this. In the first place, progressive types want people to progress (morally if not materially) and become better than they are. As a result they are less tolerant and forgiving of the dark side of human nature than your typical complacent conservative. Complacency isn't an option for people who want to right wrongs and save the world from itself. Liberals care Reese Larkin, former Greenpeace activist, is a man who cares too much. This is a near fatal quality for a telemarketing manager, which job presupposes a level of insensitivity to others bordering on oblivion. But he is stretched further on the rack by his impending divorce, a fight over access to his children, the destruction of the environment, exploitation of third world labour, and an inability to find comfortable shoes or the right mattress. And so he is no fun at parties. "Let me ask you something," Nick says, "do you sleep better being so fucking negative?" Reese has never heard Nick use such an expletive before. Nick is a model of self-control and salesmanship. He is not wearing his usual co-ordinated sock and tie arrangement but jeans and a V-necked sweatshirt which reveals his hairy chest. "Because it's fucking tedious. We're just trying to have a life here, share a few laughs."

Life in the dead end. A bit of neighbourhood excitement tonight, it seems.
Ten o'clock, the first movie ended, and I got up from the floor (I tend to watch tv laying on the floor, rather than from a chair or couch like a civilized person). Much to my surprise, there was a bit of commotion on my cul de sac, as evidenced by all the flashing lights.
One (1) fire truck, Two (2) EMS trucks, One (1) ambulance, and Two (2) squad cars.
What the hell..?
I have no clue. The fire truck soon disappeared, after having done a thirty-eight point turn to get out of our dead-end street. Someone, either the father or a balding Oma, was taken out of the house across the street on a stretcher. Head-first, down the stairs. Which EMS didn't clear. Bump-bump-bump-bump-bump. Insult to injury, as it were.
Anyway, soon enough, everyone cleared out, except for the cops.

Teleplay even the exteriors are filmed on sets starts out a bit restrained, even stilted, though buoyed by Sutherland's strong performance, but gradually it gets better and better untill absolutely griping. An interesting companion piece to the bigger-budget 1990 feature. Good performances also from Gardner, Nelligan and Watson. Sutherland, at the peak of his moviestardom, agreed to do this CBC TV movie out of his fascination with the title figure...a fascination that saw him play the role before, in Witness to Yesterday , and subsequently in Bethune: The Making of a Hero . sc: Thomas Rickman (from the biography by Roderick Stewart). dir: Eric Till. - violence.- 88 min. Books in Canada First Novel Award
The Books in Canada First Novel Award is a literary award given annually to the best first novel in English published the previous year by a citizen or resident of Canada . It has been awarded since 1976. The Books in Canada First Novel Award has a tumultuous history. It was founded by the literary magazine Books in Canada but when money ran short the award was managed by Smithbooks and became the "Smithbooks/Books in Canada First Novel Award". When Smithbooks was acquired by Chapters Books Inc. , it became the "Chapters/Books in Canada First Novel Award". In 1999 the magazine decided to end its affiliation with Chapters. It is now officially the " Amazon.ca /Books in Canada First Novel Award".
