PETER STRAUB: Connoisseur of Fear "I had a connoisseur's...appreciation of fear. Fear and I were old buddies, despite my best efforts to the contrary. I knew his whole family, his older brothers Terror and Panic, his little sister, Nightmare, their charming parents, Chaos and Destruction, and all their cousins, Rage, Depression, Denial, Guilt, Shame, and the rest of the brood. I had first made my acquaintance with these enlightening folks in my seventh year, about twenty seconds before being struck by a car and at the moment I noticed the proximity of the vehicle to myself and understood that an unhappy collision was in the cards." Over the last two decades he has used these attributes to consistently produce entertaining and literate fiction. Straub's most recent novel, The Hellfire Club (see review ) garnered a fourth nomination for the Horror Writers Association's Bram Stoker Award as well as critical praise. Peter Straub's Lost Boy, Lost Girl - a guest review by Gary A. Braunbeck Lost Boy, Lost Girl by Peter Straub
Hardcover: 304 pages
Random House (October 7, 2003)
ISBN: 1400060923 Lost Boy, Lost Girl features characters those who have read Peter Straub's best-sellers Koko Mystery (1989), and The Throat (1993) will quickly recognize. In this book, horror novelist/Vietnam vet Timothy Underhill must travel home to Millhaven, IL and seek the aid of P.I. Tom Pasmore to solve the mystery of why Underhill's nephew disappeared after witnessing his mother's suicide. While they track a pedophilic serial killer, they realize the lost boy had become obsessed with an abandoned house where he may have fallen under the spell of a ghostly girl. This is without a doubt the best thing Straub's written in a decade. I for one thinks it takes a lot of guts and integrity for a writer of his stature to go off in a new direction under the guidance of a new editor andgulp!actually grow before our very eyes.

Jon: Peter, what made you decide to bring back Tim Underhill in Lost Boy, Lost Girl Peter: There was no special reason, really. He makes things comfortable for me, because I'm familiar with his stance, his point of view. Jon: Being a native of Milwaukee, I couldn't help but notice the similarities between Millhaven and Milwaukee. What is your connection with Milwaukee? Peter: I was born in Milwaukee and lived there for the first 18 years of my life. After graduate school, I came back for another three years and then took off for Dublin. Jon: Your books always seem to end up with the horror genre at bookstores, even though some are clearly something else. Does this bother you? Personally I would rather just see fiction all together. Jon: The locations in your books are always wonderful and vivid. Millhaven aside, do you use actual places as a basis for them? Peter: Every now and then I've used Westport, CT, where I once lived, not exceedingly happily. In KOKO, I used a lot of real locations, but I built an underground arcade in Chinatown.

At times reminiscent of others such as Lucius Shepherd, Joe Haldeman and Stephen King, Magic Terror is a book that starts hesitantly but gains momentum like an avalanche
Peter Straub is best known for his 1979 classic novel Ghost Story "The Ghost Village" returns the reader to the familiar territory of The Vietnam War, settings more reminiscent of Lucius Shepherd and Joe Haldeman . However as it progresses, Straub’s prose takes it into completely unexpected directions: "the men lounging in the darkness; the pattern of the cigarette smoke, and the patterns they made, sitting or standing; the in-drawing darkness, as physical as a blanket.’ ‘The Ghost Village’ gets stronger and stronger, and provides the pivot for the whole book. Straub then moves from Shepherd to Stephen King territory, to whom he dedicates

Biography
Straub taught English in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and worked for a time on his doctorate in Ireland; he has been writing since 1969. His novel Julia (1975) was an attempt to find a successful genre in which to work, after his first novel, Marriages (1973), did not sell well. Straub found that he had a talent for writing horror thrillers in the Gothic tradition. His stories are complex and well paced, with authentic settings that add to the believability of the plot. Straub is particularly good at creating grotesque characters and gruesome situations; the eeriness of his work is captivating.
