Mark Strand's "Eating Poetry" (Commonplace Book)
Mark Strand is a very good poet. Go get one of his books here
Ink runs from the corners of my mouth.
There is no happiness like mine.
I have been eating poetry.
The librarian does not believe what she sees.
Her eyes are sad
and she walks with her hands in her dress.
The poems are gone.
The light is dim.
The dogs are on the basement stairs and coming up.
Their eyeballs roll, their blond legs burn like brush. The poor librarian begins to stamp her feet and weep. She does not understand. When I get on my knees and lick her hand, she screams. I am a new man. I snarl at her and bark. I romp with joy in the bookish dark. Labels: commonplace book poetry and literature posted by Geoff Klock at 8:57 PM

A note about Blizzard of One
Strand's poems occupy a place that exists between abstraction and the sensuous particulars of experience. It is a place created by a voice that moves with unerring ease between the commonplace and the sublime. The poems are filled with "the weather of leavetaking," but they are also unexpectedly funny. The erasure of self and the depredations of time are seen as sources of sorrow, but also as grounds for celebration. This is one of the difficult truths these poems dramatize with stoicism and wit. The winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, Blizzard of One is an extraordinary book – he summation of the work of a lifetime by one of our very few true masters of the art of poetry. And to the contents of the US edition, Waywiser has been able to add eleven new poems: "Man and Camel", "Mother and Son", "Cake", "Marsyas", "Mirror", "Black Sea", "2002", "2032", "Elevator", "The Webern Variations", "Poem After the Seven Last Words".

April 13, 1999 Poet Mark Strand of the University of Chicago, the former poet laureate of the United States and a Pulitzer Prize winner, has received the 2004 Wallace Stevens Award, an honor bestowed by the Academy of American Poets that carries with it a $100,000 prize. The award, given annually, recognizes outstanding and proven mastery in the art of poetry, and is chosen by a panel of poets. Though Strand is no stranger to such attention - in addition to serving as the poet laureate of the United States from 1990 to 1991 and winning the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, he also won two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships in 1977 and 1986 and a MacArthur Fellowship in 1987 - he said this award is particularly special to him because it comes from a panel of his peers. "It's a very sweet award, there's no doubt about that," Strand said. "It's so meaningful to know that you're thought well enough of by your peers that they think you deserve something like this." Strand, who has been a member of the University's faculty for seven years as the Andrew MacLeish Distinguished Service Professor in the Committee on Social Thought, said being associated with the award's namesake, Wallace Stevens, is also humbling. Stevens is one of the major American poets of the 20th century.

    INTRODUCTION
Strand's poetry, produced over a period of more than forty years, has earned critical acclaim, numerous awards, and a devoted following among poetry lovers. His verse deals primarily with the relationship between the individual self and the rest of the world in language that is spare and through images that are often surreal and dream-like. In addition to his verse, Strand has written fictional prose, art criticism, children's literature, and short stories. In 1990 he was named Poet Laureate of the United States.
    Biographical Information
In addition to the two Fulbright Fellowships, Strand has received a number of other awards and grants, among them an Ingram-Merrill Foundation Grant in 1966, a National Endowment for the Arts Grant in 1967, a Rockefeller Foundation Grant in 1968, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1974, and an Academy of American Poets Fellowship in 1980. His poetry collection The Story of Our Lives (1973) earned the Academy of American Poets' Edgar Allan Poe Award the year following its publication, and the 1998 collection

    The Axiomatic Stargazer
Being a Mark Strand fan means an indefinite suspension of disbelief. It means becoming disoriented, then refamiliarizing yourself with your environment so as to romantically abstract it. It undoubtedly means embracing surrealism. He’s got a new one; count me in. 72-year old Strand’s new collection, Man and Camel , offers, in typical Strand fashion, poems obsessed with the infinite. The opener, “The King,” provides a stellar invitation into his world. The poem is centered on a king, his empty kingdom, and the speaker, the king’s lone subject, who continuously summons him. The king is perhaps a stand-in for God in this case and he says, “‘I have lost my desire to rule’” The speaker tries to object but the king “entered his dream / like a mouse vanishing into its hole,” and we too vanish into this dream. Mostly, the poems remain dreamy and astral throughout the book, though some, such as “I Had Been a Polar Explorer,” are more crepuscular with an ominous tone. “Polar Explorer” is composed of the cold, eerie imagery you might expect: “blank” places, “icebergs,” and “glaciers.” But the most ill-boding of these images is one you wouldn’t expect: “a man wearing a dark coat and broad-brimmed hat.” The poem addresses the inevitable fading of desire and, though sad, suggests that the act of desiring is what sustains us. Axiomatically, all things must pass.
