  • In Eminent Victorians (1918), Lytton Strachey examined the lives of four famous English individuals from the Victorian Era and found that they were not quite what previous biographies and popular legend had made them out to be. The four in question were Cardinal Manning, the leader of England’s Roman Catholic community; Florence Nightingale, the nurse; Thomas Arnold, the educational reformer; and General Charles George Gordon, a soldier and adventurer. Strachey sought a new approach to biography. The typical, sprawling two-volume Victorian biography presented its subject in the best possible light, ignoring any aspects of the life that might tarnish the person’s achievements. Strachey determined that these large and tedious volumes, full of what he called ‘‘ill-digested masses of material,’’ did a disservice to the art of biography. In contrast, he wrote short, pithy, artful biographies that told the truth about the subjects as Strachey understood it. The result, in Eminent Victorians , is a series of radical reinterpretations. Cardinal Manning is presented as a scheming, ambitious man rather than a pious representative of God. Florence Nightingale, although Strachey does not devalue her astonishing achievements, is presented as a woman maniacally obsessed with work, whose personality was acerbic rather than saintly. Strachey’s Arnold, the headmaster of Rugby School, is little more than a pompous, pedantic fool. The portrait of Gordon is the most complex of the four, showing a man who was driven to his demise by the contradictions in his own personality and the vacillation of the British government.

Lytton Strachey opens the floodgates, Bloomsbury
By Melissa Katsoulis Sexual intercourse may have begun for some in 1963, but for the residents of 29 Fitzroy Square, Bloomsbury, it came a good deal sooner. Almost six decades before Philip Larkin wrote his famous line, Virginia Woolf had fled the oppressive rooms of her father’s house into some light and airy ones of her own, close to her sister and brother-in-law – Vanessa and Clive Bell. Their embryonic Bloomsbury Group was all for testing the intellectual, artistic and domestic boundaries that had defined previous generations, but even these forward-thinking souls still adhered to old-fashioned notions of politeness in conversation. They may have loved in triangles, but their attitude to low talk was decidedly square.

'The Letters of Lytton Strachey' by Paul Levy
Here's an excerpt from Lytton Strachey's letters, a new version recently published. It sheds light on several aspects of Woolf's relationship to both of these menand is worth thinking about in terms of women and power and genius and in the final analysis, management... Clearly Virginia Woolf was luckier than Dora Carrington.
To Leonard Woolf, February 19, 1909
"The day before yesterday I proposed to Virginia. As I did it, I saw that it would be death if she accepted me, and I managed, of course, to get out of it before the end of the conversation. The worst of it was that as the conversations went on, it became more and more obvious that the whole thing was impossible. The lack of understanding was so terrific! And how can a virgin be expected to understand? You see she is her name. If I were either greater or less I could have done it and I could either have dominated and soared and at last made her completely mine, or I could have been contented to go without everything that makes life important. Voil ! It was, as you may imagine, an amazing conversation. Her sense was absolute, and at times her supremacy was so great that I quavered.
I think there's no doubt whatever that you ought to marry her. You would be great enough, and you'd have too the immense advantage of physical desire. I was in terror lest she should kiss me. If you came and proposed she'd accept. She really really would. "

    Strachey, Lytton
    Strachey, Lytton (Giles Lytton Strachey), , English biographer and critic, educated at Cambridge. He was one of the leading members of the Bloomsbury group . Strachey is credited with having revolutionized the art of writing biography. In reaction to the copious dull scholarship and the lengthy panegyrics of the 19th cent., he determined to write biographies that were swift, selective, critical, witty, and artistic. His work includes Eminent Victorians (1918), a volume of short biographical studies;

There were letters and extracts from the book published in the Telegraph, on 14 March 2005. Hilary Spurling wrote in the Telegraph
"It starts with Strachey in his early twenties, circulating stories like the one about the school tart, who locked himself in the lavatory as the school train left the station so as to receive visits from every boy in the carriage before they all got out at Eton." Here is Philip Hensher writing in The Spectator , where Lytton worked as a freelance reviewer:
"Much of Lytton’s amorous life is recorded here. Duncan Grant: ‘Oh dear, dear, dear, how wild, how violent, and how supreme are the things of the earth!’ ... Duncan again: ‘I copulated with him again this afternoon, and at the present moment he’s in Cambridge copulating with Keynes.’ ... In the end, there was a most curious relationship with Roger Senhouse — ‘dreadfully fat’ — of a violently sado-masochistic variety, including not only whippings and beatings, and ... a crucifixion [of Strachey by] Senhouse.
Here he is, writing to Leonard Woolf, about an afternoon on Hampstead Heath with Duncan in 1905"

STRACHEY, Lytton (1880-1932). Biographer and Critic.
Autograph Letter Signed ("Lytton Strachey") to Ivor Nicholson of the Pall Mall Magazine, 1 page 8vo, Ham Spray House, Berkshire, 5 December 1928.
Thanking Nicholson for sending him copies of the Pall Mall Magazine, but explaining "that it will not be possible to contribute to it, as I am engaged in other work."
Strachey had transformed the art of biography with his ground-breaking Eminent Victorians in 1918. In this year, 1928, he had published Elizabeth and Essex . He then began work on his Portraits in Miniature , published in 1931. Short-sighted and lanky, he was described by Cecil Beaton as "immensely tall, and could be even twice his height if were not as bent [no pun apparently intended] as slopppy asparagus."
