How Rex Stout kept it fresh
The mystery of how crime writers keep a long-running series fresh has been a great topic of discussion here . Last night, I found a beautifully simple and amusing example in Rex Stout's novella "Counterfeit for Murder," from Homicide Trinity
Nero Wolfe has ordered Archie Goodwin to summon the trusted stable of freelance detectives whom they often use when extra manpower is called for. Fans will be familiar with the set piece. Goodwin always names the detectives, taking care to point out that Saul Panzer is the best of them. How is an author to keep such a scene, repeated so often, fresh? Here, Stout does it with a little joke:
"He spoke. `Saul and Fred and Orrie. At eight in the morning in my room.'

Nero Wolfe in Champange For One by Rex Stout Chapter One If it hadn't been raining and blowing that raw Tuesday morning in March I would have been out, walking to the bank to deposit a couple of cheques, when Austin Byne phoned me, and he might have tried somebody else. But more likely not. He would probably have rung again later, so I can't blame all this on the weather. As it was, I was there in the office, oiling the typewriter and the two Marley .38's, for which we had permits, from the same can of oil, when the phone rang and I lifted it and spoke. "Nero Wolfe's office, Archie Goodwin speaking."

Stout started his literary career as a writer for the pulps, publishing romance, adventure and some borderline detective stories, but after 1938 all his fiction was in the mystery field. "His face, chronically red, deepened a shade. His broad shoulders stiffened, and the creases spreading from the corners of his grey-blue eyes showed more as the eyelids tightened. Then, deciding I was playing for a burt, he controlled it. "Do you know," he asked, "whose opinion of you I would like to have? Darwin's. Where were you while evolution was going on?"

    74. Robert Crais: On Rex Stout
But I was in the store, and I continued through the stacks, and that’s when I stumbled upon five or six titles written by this guy rex stout.
    http://www.robertcrais.com/articlesandessays/stout.htm
Home Bio Works Media ... Contact ROBERT CRAIS: ON REX STOUT Archie and Me an introduction to Rex Stout’s ‘Before Midnight’ I find comfort in friendship. I am a social animal and, even though I mouth off about being a rugged individualist, iron-willed and resolute, standing alone against all odds like some sort of hyperheroic Clint Eastwood, when push comes to reverse head kicks, I am as much a creature of the herd as, say, dingoes or chacma baboons or lions in the veldt. I seek family and friends and the patterns of human interaction and that is why, when I sat down to write Elvis Cole, I gave him Joe Pike.
My publisher labels these books of mine An Elvis Cole Novel . That is but a half truth, no more complete than suggesting Holmes without Watson, Nick without Nora, Batman without Robin. Elvis and Joe are yin and yang, two halves to the whole, the light and dark of but one character. Theirs is a gestalt of friendship that hopefully yields a sum to the reader far greater than either might yield on his own. Sort of like Archie Goodwin and Nero Wolfe.
Let me be honest with you. I never gave a damn about Nero Wolfe. Here was this fat guy who sat around his house, futzing with orchids and gorging himself on a high fat, high cholesterol diet and acting like a spoiled and peevish child when things didn’t go his way. Think about it. If Nero Wolfe were real, instead of fictional, and you or I actually had to deal with him instead of simply reading about him from the comfortable distance of our arm chairs, neither of us would like him very much. Nero Wolfe was a dick.

I opened my mouth to call to him, but before the words left my
lips he had let out an ear-splitting yell of terror and bounded
down the steps and past us, with arms flying in every direction,
running like one possessed. Nor did he return during the few hours

Two days later found us boarding the yacht at Callao. When I
had discovered, to my profound astonishment, at the hacienda, that another year had taken us as far as the tenth day of March, I had greatly doubted if we should find Captain Harris still waiting for us. But there he was; and he had not even put himself to the trouble of becoming uneasy about us. As he himself put it that night in the cabin, over a bottle of wine, he "didn't know but what the senora had decided to take the Andes home for a mantel ornament, and was engaged in the little matter of transportation." But when I informed him that "the senora" was no more

Kidnapped Russ Allbery Reviews A Patchwork Planet
    And Four to Go
by Rex Stout Series: Nero Wolfe #30 Publisher: Bantam July 1958 Printing: November 1959 Format: Mass market Pages: Nero Wolfe is a former world traveller, a lover of orchids, and a monumentally lazy private detective. His stories are told by Archie Goodwin, his assistant and investigator. Wolfe hates to leave his home; Archie does most of the legwork, not to mention lots of interviews with the police in which he tries to give them as little information as possible until Wolfe breaks open the whole case. This is a collection of four Nero Wolfe short stories. Three of them happen to do with various holidays, but don't get a false impression from that; it appears to be coincidental. There's no particular holiday theme. What there is are four short mysteries with all the standard enjoyable Nero Wolfe tropes: Archie being selective about what he tells the police, Wolfe getting annoyed and grumpy about being disturbed, Wolfe's obsession with orchids, and of course the conferences in his office where all is revealed. The structure of the stories is a bit formulaic, but each is unique enough that I enjoyed the whole collection. Wolfe mysteries, to note, are not the sort where the reader is given all the evidence and can try to solve the mystery before the investigators. Usually, Wolfe goes into the final confrontation with only a tactic to discover the murderer, not the final understanding of the mystery. These stories are about the process, and about Wolfe's thoroughly enjoyable speeches and Archie's infuriation of the police.
