Rex Stout and Nero Wolfe
Linda Kinkead Articles in this Topic Discussions in this Topic Aug 25, 1998
Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe first appeared in 1934 in a book titled Fer-de-Lance . Wolfe is almost certainly the quirkiest of the hard-boiled detectives of the time. His career, under the guidance of Rex Stout, continued until 1975, the year of Stout's death and the publication of his final Wolfe tale, A Family Affair . Wolfe made a brief reappearance when author Robert Goldsborough took over the series in the late '80s and early '90s. The last Goldsborough book published was Silver Spire in 1994. Nero Wolfe was born in Montenegro, which became part of Yugoslavia, but with recent territorial disputes in that area, I am not sure in exactly which country Montenegro now lies. Wolfe, himself an obsessive/compulsive person, maintains a household of unusual characters in his brownstone on West 35th Street in New York City. It was a double-width house with seven steps up from the sidewalk. The front door was fitted with one-way glass, the reason for which was never given although it is assumed that Wolfe practiced his private investigation work prior to hiring his live-in assistant, Archie Goodwin, in Fer-de-Lance Comment is made in every book describing Wolfe's excessive weight. Because of his large size, he is not easily accomodated in any manner of public transportation and so, in general, he goes nowhere. He has a desk chair which has been custom-made to fit his great bulk. His specific weight is never disclosed in pounds, but he is described as being one seventh of a ton. When you do the math on this, the poundage comes out at around 286 lbs. While this is overweight for the average man, it is not so excessive as to cause all of the problems alluded to throughout this series, but it does add certain levity and begets more than one chuckle and may be caused by his demands for gourmet delights.

http://www.things.org/~muffy/pages/books/rex_stout/nero_wolfe.html
Nero Wolfe is the detective in a long-running series of mystery novels by Rex Stout . He lives in an old four-story brownstone in New York City, on West Thirty-fifth Street . Living with him are his assistant, Archie Goodwin, his cook, Fritz Brenner, and his orchid nurse, Theodore Horstmann. He engages in detection to support his two loves, food and orchids . He says of orchids that they are "his concubines: insipid, expensive, parasitic and temperamental." Wolfe spends the hours of 9-11am and 4-6pm in the greenhouse on the roof, with Theodore and the orchids; the rest of the day is spent in his office Much of the information on these pages was taken from the book Nero Wolfe of West Thirty-fifth Street by William S. Baring-Gould.

Rex Todhunter Stout was born 1 December 1886 in Noblesville, Indiana to Quaker parents. Soon afterward, the family moved to Wakarusa, Kansas, where he became known as a math prodigy. He briefly attended Kansas University before enlisting in the Navy, where he spent two years as a warrant officer aboard Theodore Roosevelt's presidential yacht. He left the Navy in 1908, travelling and working a variety of jobs until devising and implementing a school savings system which was implemented in 400 districts around the country, making him a wealthy man.
During World War II, he opposed Nazism as chair of the War Writer's Board, as emcee of the "Speaking of Liberty" radio program, and as member of several national committees. After the war, he fought against the use of nuclear weapons, was an active leader in the Author's Guild, and resumed writing Nero Wolfe novels.
