  • A Bio-bibliographical note about Bram Stoker
"Born in Dublin in November 1847, Bram Stoker was the third of seven children. When he was sixteen he started at Trinity College Dublin, where, overcoming previous disabilities, he became the University athletics champion. While at University he developed a great passion for the theatre after witnessing a performance by the actor Henry Irving. "Stoker followed in his father's footsteps and became a clerk in the Civil Service in 1870 but his interest in the arts continued to grow and the following year he wrote the first of his many theatre reviews. In 1878 his strong admiration for Henry Irving led the actor to appoint him business manager at London's Lyceum Theatre. In the same year Stoker married the twenty-year old Florence Balcombe. "Although Stoker wrote a number of short stories which appeared in magazines his reputation as an author stands almost wholly on his novel

by Bram Stoker The classic vampire story by Bram Stoker revolves around a struggle between good and evil, tradition and modernity, and lust versus chastity. The author didn’t invent vampires, but his novel has so captured the public’s imagination that he is rightly considered their popularizer. Listen and you will meet not only the Count himself, but heroes Jonathan Harker and Abraham Van Helsing, plus an array of madmen, psychiatrists, and fair maidens who cross paths with the fanged menace. Dr. Jeanne Keyes Youngson, president and founder of the BRAM STOKER MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION, first became aware of Stoker as an individual in his own right when she read Harry Ludlam's A Biography of Dracula: The Life Story of Bram Stoker in 1964.
Indeed, until the publication of Ludlam's book in '62, little was known of Stoker except that he had worked at the Lyceum Theatre in London as Acting Manager for the renowned stage performer, Henry Irving.
Ludlam's biography surely set Youngson's subconscious working overtime. In 1965 while on a trip to Romania, she conceived the idea of starting a Dracula Fan Club in honor of Stoker's Count, Vlad Dracula the Impaler, and of course Stoker himself.

Bram Stoker is remembered today for just one book, Dracula , which introduced the world's most famous vampire , but this was only a small part of his life. Bram (Abraham) Stoker was born in Dublin in 1847, one of the seven children of Abraham and Charlotte Stoker. A delicate child, he was partly educated at home, and was deeply influenced both by his father's interest in the theatre, and his mother's often gruesome stories of her childhood, particularly those concerning the great cholera epidemic of 1832. He entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1864, where he became a successful athlete and debater. He graduated in 1870 with honours in science, maths, oratory, history, and composition. Afterwards, he kept up his association with the College, and became friendly with Oscar Wilde's family when Oscar entered Trinity College in 1871.

[The following is a revised excerpt from Elizabeth Miller, (2000). Further details about this book can be found at http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~emiller/SNinfo.htm "[Bathory's] legend certainly played a major role in the creation of the character of Count Dracula." (Raymond McNally, Dracula was a Woman Rubbish! The hypothetical link between Count Dracula and Countess Elizabeth Bathory (1560-1614) can be traced back to the early 1970s. By that time, there was an upsurge of interest in the Blood Countess, notorious for murdering young women and bathing in their blood in order to retain her youthful appearance. Inevitably, her lust for blood would precipitate an association with vampires. In 1970, prior to any investigation into possible influences on Stoker's novel, the title of the Hammer movie Countess Dracula created an artificial link. Gabriel Ronay included a section on Bathory in The Dracula Myth (1972), as did Donald Glut in

Whitby England: the town that inspired Dracula
While visiting Whitby England, Bram Stoker acquired much of the detail for his novel Dracula.
Whitby, England is a small fishing village that lies along the edge of the North York Moors at the mouth of the River Esk. The river splits the town into east and west as it slides into the North Sea. Both halves of the fishing port perch atop sheer cliffs overlooking the harbor and the sea beyond; pleasant jumbles of small red-roofed houses line either side of the river, like carelessly tossed dice. It is an ancient village first settled in the 5th or 6th century AD. In 637 AD a Catholic abbey was built nearby that pulled Whitby into history when, in 664 AD, the abbey was the chosen location for the Synod – council – of the Celtic and Roman Catholic Churches to come to an agreement on the celebration date for Easter. In 1077, the abbey was rebuilt in the foreboding gothic style of the medieval time. Now, the abbey ruins brood on the outskirts of Whitby. The commanding presence of towering stone fa§ades pierced with sightless arches can cast the eerie shadow of folklore on even the most unimaginative mind. It was into this harbor of history and myth that Bram Stoker sailed in 1890. He had been working on a novel inspired by Hungarian adventurer Arminius Vambery who had regaled Stoker with eastern European tales of the blood-hungry living dead. Whitby proved to be the perfect setting for Stoker to derive some of the more intriguing details for his book. He was so impressed by the surrealistic, menacing aspects of the immense stone abbey and St Mary’s Cathedral looming over the small town, that he used Whitby in his novel Dracula as the place where the seductive Count meets and kills Lucy.

    Review by Roger Miller
Barbara Belford's Bram Stoker , as the subtitle says, A Biography of the Author of Dracula , but another figure in the book constantly crowds center stage for attention. That figure is, fittingly enough, an actor, Henry Irving. Stoker spent his entire adult life in thrall to him. There is, to jump ahead a bit, a pleasant irony in this situation. Irving is considered the greatest English actor of the late 19th century. (Perhaps I should say greatest male actor. Ellen Terry, his longtime partner in drama, was equally acclaimed, but Irving dominated her too.) Few today would recognize Irving's name, but virtually every schoolboy knows (as we used to say when we could be reasonably sure that any schoolboy knew anything) that Bram Stoker is the author of Dracula . It virtually runs together: Bramstokersdracula That, of course, is now.

Guide Rating - To commemorate the centenary of Dracula , Carol Margaret Davison has brought together this collection of essays by some of the world's leading scholars. This book offers analysis of Stoker's original work, but also celebrates the influence this famous monster has had upon our literature and culture. The history of Bram Stoker's Dracula begins with its publication in 1897, though that event was largely unheralded. In the years that followed, the book has become, according to Davison, "one of the rare popular cultural novels to be canonised."
    Dracula Influences
While the popularity of the Dracula myth has helped to keep the story alive, it has also created a great deal of "critical molestation." No reader can come to the text without preconceptions, derived from the screen and other vampire literature. It's interesting to note that although we've been influenced by these literary progeny from Anne Rice and all of the other writers of vampire literature, none of these works has managed to overtake or overshadow the original Dracula. As James B. Twitchell says, "There have been many twentieth century novelists... who have dealt with the vampire, but none so strikingly as Stoker."
