He was born in 1847 at 15 Marino Crescent – then as now called "The Crescent" – in Fairview , a coastal suburb of Dublin Ireland . His parents were Abraham Stoker and the feminist Charlotte Mathilda Blake Thornely . Stoker was the third of seven children. Abraham and Charlotte were members of the Clontarf Church of Ireland parish and attended the parish church (St. John the Baptist located on Seafield Road West) with their children, who were both baptised there. Stoker was an invalid until he started school at the age of seven — when he made a complete and astounding recovery. Of this time, Stoker wrote, "I was naturally thoughtful, and the leisure of long illness gave opportunity for many thoughts which were fruitful according to their kind in later years."

author of the popular horror tale Dracula. Although an invalid in early childhood he could not stand or walk until he was seven , Stoker outgrew his weakness to become an outstanding athlete and football (soccer) player at the University of Dublin. After 10 years in the civil service at Dublin Castle, during which he was also an unpaid drama critic for the Dublin Mail, he made the acquaintance of his idol, the actor Sir Henry Irving, and from 1878 until Irving's death 27 years later, he acted as his manager, writing as many as 50 letters a day for him and accompanying him on his American tours. Turning to fiction late in life, Stoker published The Snake's Pass in 1890, and in 1897 his masterpiece, Dracula , appeared. Written chiefly in the form of diaries and journals kept by the principal characters—Jonathan Harker, who made the first contact with the vampire Count Dracula... Irish-born writer, theater critic, and manager for the famed late-C19 actor Henry Irving, Stoker is of course best known as the author of Dracula , the definitive vampire story. Stoker wrote a number of other novels and short stories, several of which ( The Jewel of Seven Stars and Lair of the White Worm , to mention just a couple of the novels) also have major supernaturalist elements.

  • I heard a heavy step approaching behind the great door, and saw through the chinks the gleam of a coming light. Then there was the sound of rattling chains and the clanking of massive bolts drawn back. A key was turned with the loud grating noise of long disuse, and the great door swung back.
Within, stood a tall old man, clean shaven save for a long white moustache, and clad in black from head to foot, without a single speck of colour about him anywhere. He held in his hand an antique silver lamp, in which the flame burned without a chimney or globe of any kind, throwing long quivering shadows as it flickered in the draught of the open door. The old man motioned me in with his right hand with a courtly gesture, saying in excellent English, but with a strange intonation.
"Welcome to my house! Enter freely and of your own free will!"

Biography of Bram Stoker (1847-1912)
Bram Stoker Writer of one of the world's most famous horror novels, Abraham Stoker was born to the loosely defined socio-cultural group known as the Anglo-Irish. A Protestant Dubliner, he was the son of a civil servant, and he was expected to follow in his father's footsteps. As a child, Abraham Stoker was a sickly child often on the point of death?by his own account, he never stood upright without aid until he was seven years old. But he grew into a physically robust youth, excelling in athletics during his college years. At Trinity College, he studied mathematics and became president of the Philosophical Society and the Historical Society. The many years with Henry Irving were full of hard work and sacrifice, as Stoker frequently put his work before his family. His only child, Noel, was born in 1879. Noel later felt that Stoker's work for Irving wore out the devoted younger man. There was constant touring and promotional work to be done, throughout the British Isles and as far away as North America. It was during these years that Stoker wrote his greatest novel, Dracula (1897). In 1905, Irving collapsed and died while on tour in Sheffield. Stoker was so profoundly affected by the death of his friend and hero that he suffered a stroke. After Irving's death, Stoker continued to write fiction and do newspaper work until his own death in 1912.

This was the chance for him to develope a passion for reading, prelude to his passion for writing. At The Trinity College of Dublin, he got involved in literary and dramatic activities. After graduation, he became a civil servant, a job that he combined in 1871 with a position of dramatic critic at the Evening Mail. In 1876, after covering Henry Irving's performance in Hamlet, he met the actor and they became lifelong friends. His reputation as a writer was initiated in 1872, when The London Society published The Crystal Cup, a short story. In 1878, Bram moved to London after he had married Oscar Wilde's ex-mistress Florence Balcombe. There he became the acting manager of Irving's Lyceum Theatre. Additionally, he wrote a large number of sensational novels, his most famous being the vampire tale Dracula (1897). Abraham "Bram" Stoker (1847-1912) , Irish writer, best known for his vampire novel Dracula Bram Stoker was born near Dublin on November 8, 1847, the third of seven children. An unidentified illness kept him virtually bedridden until age seven. Although he remained shy and bookish, in his adolescence Bram Stoker was anything but sickly. Perhaps to make amends for his earlier frailty, he was by this time developing into a fine athlete. At Trinity College, Dublin, he would conquer his shyness and be named University Athlete. Young Bram had always dreamed of becoming a writer, but his father had safer plans. Yielding to the father's wishes, Bram followed him into a career as a civil servant in Dublin Castle. While climbing the civil service ladder, he wrote a dry tome entitled Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland . This book of rules, however, would not be published until 1879, by which time Stoker would be married, living in another country, and immersed in a new career.

    About the Stoker Awards
Each year, the Horror Writer's Association presents the Bram Stoker Awards for Superior Achievement, named in honor of Bram Stoker, author of the seminal horror work, Dracula. The Stoker Awards were instituted immediately after the organization's incorporation in 1987. While many members, including HWA's first President, Dean Koontz, had reservations about awards for writing since the point of HWA was for writers to cooperate for their mutual benefit, not to compete against one another the majority of members heavily favored presenting awards, both to recognize outstanding work in the horror field and to publicize HWA's activities. To ameliorate the competitive nature of awards, the Stokers are given "for superior achievement," not for "best of the year," and the rules are deliberately designed to make ties fairly probable. The first awards were presented in 1988 (for works published in 1987), and they have been presented every year since. The award itself is an eight-inch replica of a fanciful haunted house, designed specifically for HWA by sculptor Steven Kirk. The door of the house opens to reveal a brass plaque engraved with the name of the winning work and its author.

Bram Stoker
Bram Stoker, born in Dublin in the year 1847, had a very troubled childhood, riddled with illness and suffering from a late development to speech. Bram Stoker went on to become a highly popular member of "Trinity College", where he was also a very successful sportsman. His first working duty was as a civil servant, moving on to become a journalist. However, after seeing the actor, Henry Irving act on one of his tours of Ireland, Bram Stoker became the manager of the Lyceum, London, shortly after his marriage to Florence in 1876. Stoker remained there throughout his career and it was his careful management, providing a contrast to Henry Irving`s theatrical excesses, that was probably a major reason for the Lyceum`s success. Bram Stoker Bram Stoker wrote a number of short stories and novels, but surely is remembered for only one, that of his tale of vampires " Dracula ", published in 1897. Another educated at "Trinity College", was Oscar Wilde, who met Bram Stoker on numerous occasions, before Stoker left for his post in London. Indeed, Florence Stoker was Oscar Wilde`s first lady friend and he and Bram Stoker continued to cross paths, if not crossing swords, throughout the latter years of the nineteenth century. Oscar Wilde Bram Stoker`s association and working career with Henry Irving, whom later became Sir Henry Irving, was a very hard one. It is a wonder he found the time and energy to write all these short stories let alone write the novels, including the blockbuster "Dracula" and therefore not too surprising the man is said to have died from exhaustion in 1912.
