3. Carla Nayland Book Review - The Wicked Day, By Mary Stewart

The Wicked Day
Mary Stewart First published 1983. Edition reviewed, Hodder, 2006, ISBN 0-340-35214-0 Set in Britain in the latter part of King Arthur's reign, approximately the early sixth century, The Wicked Day tells Mordred's story. The major characters are familiar figures from the legend: Mordred, Arthur, Guinevere, Bedwyr, Arthur's half-sisters Morgause and Morgan, Morgause's Orkney sons Gawain, Gaheris, Agravaine and Gareth, and Merlin's successor Nimue. Some secondary characters, such as Morgause's lover Gabran, the goldsmith and his slave/spy, and Mordred's foster parents, are fictional. The story follows on from Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy (review here ), but is not part of it. Mordred is Arthur's illegitimate son and nephew, the result of Arthur's brief incestuous liaison with his half-sister Morgause. Merlin the enchanter prophesied that Mordred would be Arthur's downfall (see the Merlin trilogy for this part of the story), and Morgause has raised Mordred in secret on the remote Orkney islands, waiting for the day when she can use Mordred to destroy her hated half-brother. When Mordred discovers his parentage, he loves and respects Arthur as both father and king. He defies his mother's schemes and vows to serve Arthur faithfully - but Fate may not be soeasily denied.

INTERVIEW WITH MARY STEWART
by
RAYMOND H. THOMPSON
HOUSE OF LETTERAWE, LOCH AWE, SCOTLAND
14 APRIL 1989
The drive to the town of Lochawe in Argyllshire took me through some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland on a fine spring afternoon: along the banks of Loch Lomond with its islands reflected in the still water; up by the Falloch River into snow-covered mountains; over Strath Fillan and down Glen Lochy between Beinn Udlaidh and Ben Lui; then to Loch Awe itself, with mountains rising steeply on every side. That night, in the House of Letterawe, Lady Mary Stewart, to give her her full title, gave me a fine dinner, then beat me in a game of rummy. It was suitable preparation for the interview she gave the following morning. Initially, she did not want the interview to be taped, but finally agreed, despite misgivings, after I promised to give her editorial control over the material. As I had foreseen, she found nothing to object to.
Stewart's suspense novels were best-sellers when she turned to Arthurian legend in The Crystal Cave (London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1970). Despite the doubts of her publishers, this proved equally successful, and they were happy when she decided to continue the story of Merlin in

MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS (r. 1542-67) Born at Linlithgow Palace, West Lothian on 8 December 1542, Mary became Queen of Scots when she was six days old.
Her claims to the throne of England were almost as strong as her claims to the Scottish throne. As Henry VII of England's great-granddaughter, Mary was next in line to the English throne, after Henry VIII's children.
Given her youth and sex, the Scottish nobility decided that they must make peace with England, and they agreed that she should marry Henry VIII's son, the future Edward VI.
No sooner had the treaty been arranged, however, than Catholics opposed to the plan took the young Mary to Stirling Castle and, to Henry's fury, they broke the match, preferring to return to Scotland's traditional alliance with France.
