The Silverado Museum, which houses one of the world's most distinguished collections of Stevensoniana, opened its doors to the public on December 14, 1969, thus commemorating the 75th anniversary of the death of the author of such beloved classics as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and A Child's Garden of Verses. The Museum is located in St. Helena in the heart of the wine country, almost in the shadow of the mountain from which the city takes its name. In 1880 Robert Louis Stevenson spent his honeymoon in an abandoned bunkhouse at the old Silverado Mine on the slope of Mount St. Helena. The Silverado Squatters is Stevenson's account of his stay there.

TREASURE ISLAND ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON EDITED WITH AN INTRODUCTION AND NOTES BY FRANKLIN T. BAKER, A.M., PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH IN TEACHERS COLLEGE, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY NEW YORK CHARLES E. MERRILL CO.
BY
CHARLES E. MERRILL CO. EDITOR'S PREFACE THIS little classic of Stevenson's is now definitely placed in the category of school books. It has taken this rank because of its undoubted appeal to young readers, and because of the high order of its workmanship. If, however, its place among school books means that it is to be made, through mistaken editorial and pedagogical zeal, a task instead of a pleasure to the boy, the choice of it for such purposes is a grave mistake. The present editor has therefore sought only to furnish such notes as will save the reader from the inconvenience of going to the dictionary, and such comments as will enlighten him regarding the high place the book has won with readers of cultivated tastes. F. T. B.

Etching, 1902 Robert Louis Stevenson's Fables was published in New York by Longmans, Green in 1902. Previously, the thirteen fables had been published with other works. Stevenson had a long-standing fascination with the fable as a literary form. In 1888, he approached his publisher with a collection of fables that he had composed over the years. This edition includes six etchings by Ethel King Martyn.

    Work of Later Years
R HAMMERTON, in his STEVENSONIANA (pp. 323-4), has given the humorous inscriptions on the volumes of his works which Stevenson presented to Dr Trudeau, who attended him when he was in Saranac in 1887-88 - very characteristic in every way, and showing fully Stevenson's fine appreciation of any attention or service. On the DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE volume he wrote: "Trudeau was all the winter at my side:
I never saw the nose of Mr Hyde." And on KIDNAPPED is this: "Here is the one sound page of all my writing,
The one I'm proud of and that I delight in." Stevenson was exquisite in this class of efforts, and were they all collected they would form indeed, a fine supplement and illustration of the leading lesson of his essays - the true art of pleasing others, and of truly pleasing one's self at the same time. To my thinking the finest of all in this line is the legal (?) deed by which he conveyed his birthday to little Miss Annie Ide, the daughter of Mr H. C. Ide, a well-known American, who was for several years a resident of Upolo, in Samoa, first as Land Commissioner, and later as Chief Justice under the joint appointment of England, Germany, and the United States. While living at Apia, Mr Ide and his family were very intimate with the family of R. L. Stevenson. Little Annie was a special pet and protege of Stevenson and his wife. After the return of the Ides to their American home, Stevenson "deeded" to Annie his birthday in the following unique document:

Robert Louis Stevenson and Western Samoa
This article was written by Thomas H. Booth Western Samoa Western Samoa-still not a big tourist destination-claims the largest proportion of full-blooded Polynesians in the world. At last count there were 162,000 of them, a collection of robust, often tattooed, sometimes obese, lava lava clad folks who live on the two main islands of Savai'i, and Upolu. Here too, for many of these people, the tempo, the style of life is much the same now as it was in 1889, when Robert Louis Stevenson and his wife Fanny first appeared-and for some of these folks the conditions of island happiness remains the same. It's a happiness based on a healthy wife, plenty of children, a Fale for cooking in, some coconut trees, bananas, taro, breadfruit trees, a church, a canoe and a few pigs. But fortunately or unfortunately, independent Western Samoa is beginning to stir. A new airport has been built, new hotels too, and when word gets out about her beaches, mountains and general beauty the tourist onslaught will begin. Added to this, Western Samoa is beginning to consider entry into international life, and into a world community that may offer more than subsistence living.
