For we are very lucky, with a lamp before the door,
And Leerie stops to light it as he lights so many more;
And O! before you hurry by with ladder and with light,
O Leerie, see a little child and nod to him tonight!
( from "The Lamplighter" by R.L.Stevenson in A Child's Garden of Verses The Stevenson House was the childhood home of Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894), creator of Treasure Island Kidnapped and Jekyll and Hyde , from the age of six until he finally left in 1880. Born at Edinburgh in 1850, the son of Thomas Stevenson a noted lighthouse engineer, Robert Louis Stevenson grew up in the Stevenson House at 17 Heriot Row from the age of six. Here he was cared for through many illnesses by his mother and his beloved nurse Alison Cunningham, known as 'Cummie', whom he described in the Dedication of his collection of poems for children A Child's Garden of Verses as "My second mother, my first wife". Prevented by ill-health from going much to ordinary schools, the Stevenson House was the centre of his world and his mind was nourished by ceaseless reading as well as the stories told by Cummie of ghosts, ghouls, Scottish history, and the Bible. He also travelled with his father around Scotland on his engineering business - once descending in a complete diving suit of brass helmet, lead boots etc. to view the underwater works for the harbour at Wick, in northern Scotland- as well as journeying with his parents to the Continent. Intended by his father to be trained as a civil engineer, R.L.S. matriculated at the University of Edinburgh in 1867. It was soon clear, however, that the young man was unsuited for the work and he agreed with his father to study law, to give him a steady income should writing - already his chosen path - fail him. Literature, however, had seized him. Edinburgh and the Stevenson House were still his home, and the centre of his imagination, but he began to travel more and further. London, Bournemouth, France and the Continent all drew him - for his health and sheer wanderlust. Ever and again, however, he came back to Edinburgh, that "meteorological purgatory" (

Robert Louis Stevenson
Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, on November 13, 1850. He studied engineering at Edinburgh University, spending his summers in France, but eventually abandoned it in favor of law. However, he never practiced, having decided that he would be a writer. His first published work was an essay called "Roads" and his first books were collections of travel writings, such as An Inland Voyage . He then met his future wife Fanny, an older American woman, and traveled to California, which he described in several autobiographical works. He began writing fiction with short stories, such as A Lodging for the Night and The Pavilion of the Links and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Treasure Island was his first novel, published in 1883, which made him successful. He wrote other novels in the same style, such as Kidnapped and Catriona , as well as historical romances and stories set in the South Seas.

Biographical note
Novelist and essayist, was born at Edinburgh, the son of Thomas Stevenson, a distinguished civil engineer. His health was extremely delicate. He was destined for the engineering profession, in which his family had for two generations been eminent, but having neither inclination nor physical strength for it, he in 1871 exchanged it for law, and was called to the Bar in 1875, but never practised. From childhood his interests had been literary, and in 1871 he began to contribute to the Edinburgh University Magazine and the Portfolio . A tour in a canoe in 1876 led to the publication in 1878 of his first book, An Inland Voyage . In the same year, The New Arabian Nights , afterwards separately published appeared in magazines, and in 1879 he brought out Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes . In that year he went to California and married Mrs. Osbourne. Returning to Europe in 1880 he entered upon a period of productiveness which, in view of his wretched health, was, both as regards quantity and worth, highly remarkable. The year 1881 was marked by his unsuccessful candidature for the Chair of Constitutional Law and History at Edinburgh, and by the publication of
