Laurence Sterne was born November 24, 1713 in Clonmel County Tipperary Ireland . His father was an Ensign in a British regiment recently returned from Dunkirk . Sterne’s father’s regiment was disbanded on the day of Sterne’s birth, and within six months the family had returned to Yorkshire in northern England. The first decade of Sterne’s life was spent moving from place to place as his father was reassigned throughout England and Ireland. During this period Sterne never lived in one place for more than a year. Sterne was sent to Hipperholme Grammar School near Halifax when he was ten years old; he never saw his father again. Sterne was admitted to a

Laurence Sterne
Laurence Sterne (1713-68), the author of Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey, was the great-grandson of Richard Sterne, Archbishop of York and Master of Jesus College. Laurence's father, Roger Sterne, was a soldier who served as an officer in Flanders under the Duke of Marlborough. His mother, Agnes, was the widow of a fellow officer, who married Roger Sterne while he was on campaign in Dunkirk in 1711. Laurence was born on 24 November 1713 at Clonmel in County Tipperary, where his father's regiment was stationed. He spent his childhood wandering from place to place in Ireland and England, following in the wake of his father's regiment. Military life was to furnish Sterne with some of his most notable comic characters, especially Uncle Toby, Corporal Trim and Lieutenant Le Fever in Tristram Shandy. In 1723, when he was ten years old, he was sent to a school in Halifax, where he learned Latin and Greek. His impressionable nature manifested itself in the classroom, where the stories in the Iliad moved him to uncontrollable tears or laughter (1). He was also much given to mischief, as when, the schoolroom having been newly whitewashed, he mounted the workman's ladder and wrote with the brush 'Lau. Sterne' in large capital letters on the wall. According to Sterne, the master declared (somewhat improbably) that 'that name should never be effaced, for [he] was a boy of genius and sure to come to preferment' (2). In 1727, his father took part in the defence of Gibraltar, and there 'was run through the body by Captain Phillips in a duel: the quarrel began about a goose' (3). He never fully recovered from the wound and died suddenly in March 1731.

English novelist and humorist. Sterne was a clergyman in York for many years before his talents became apparent when he wrote a Swiftian satire in support of his dean in a church squabble. Turning his parishes over to a curate, he began to write Tristram Shandy stream of consciousness fiction. Long afflicted with tuberculosis, Sterne fled the damp air of England and undertook the travels that inspired his unfinished Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy (1768), a comic novel that defies conventional expectations of a travel book. document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "Laurence Sterne" from Britannica Concise antinovel - Type of avant-garde novel that departs from traditional novelistic conventions by ignoring such elements as plot, dialogue, and human interest. Torassei tous anqropous ou ta Pragmata, alla ta peri tvn Pragmatvn, Dogmata VOL. I To the Right Honourable Mr Pitt. Sir, Never poor Wight of a Dedicator had less hopes from his Dedication, than I have from this of mine; for it is written in a bye corner of the kingdom, and in a retir'd thatch'd house, where I live in a constant endeavour to fence against the infirmities of ill health, and other evils of life, by mirth; being firmly persuaded that every time a man smiles, but much more so, when he laughs, it adds something to this Fragment of Life. I humbly beg, Sir, that you will honour this book, by taking it [not under your Protection, it must protect itself, but] into the country with you; where, if I am ever told, it has made you smile; or can conceive it has beguiled you of one moment's painI shall think myself as happy as a minister of state; perhaps much happier than any one [one only excepted] that I have read or heard of. Laurence Sterne A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy Le Fevre The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gent. Introduction
m. Tristram Shandy , appeared. Its peculiar and original style of humour, its whimsicality, and perhaps also its defiance of conventionality, and even its frequent lapses into indecorum, achieved for it an immediate and immense popularity. S. went up to London and became the lion of the day. The third and fourth vols. appeared in 1761, the fifth and sixth in 1762, the seventh and eighth in 1765, and the last in 1767. Meanwhile he had published the Sermons of Mr. Yorick (1760), and his remaining work, The Sentimental Journey appeared in 1768. From the time of his finding himself a celebrity his parishioners saw but little of him, his time being passed either in the gaieties of London or in travelling on the Continent. Latterly he was practically separated from his wife and only daughter, to the former of whom his behaviour had been anything but exemplary. His health, which had begun to give way soon after his literary career had commenced, finally broke down, and he fell into a consumption, of which he died in London on March 18, 1768, utterly alone and unattended. His body was followed to the grave by one coach containing his publisher and another gentleman; and it was exhumed and appeared in a few days upon the table of the anatomical professor at Cambridge He died in debt, but a subscription was raised for his wife and daughter, the latter of whom
