The Poetry of Gerald Stern
A Poet Raging Against Pretension (and Princeton) . Nothing too unusual about that, I receive these updates regularly. However, once I read: First I went to pbs.org For me, the most revealing part of the interview came in the following exchange: but there are certainly other insights to be found here. Seven of his poems can be found at Norton poets online, where, naturally enough, you can find a listing of all of his poetry books, while another three, and an excellent mp3 recording, can be found at http:/The Hapless Dilettante . Another link to eight poems, some of which overlap the above, can be found at Gerald Stern At The Academy of American Poets THE DANCING
In all these rotten shops, in all this broken furniture
and wrinkled ties and baseball trophies and coffee pots
I have never seen a post-war Philco
with the automatic eye
in 1945 in that tiny living room
on Beechwood Boulevard, nor danced as I did
then, my knives all flashing, my hair all streaming,
my mother red with laughter, my father cupping

jerseyworks A REFLECTION ON THE POETRY OF GERALD STERN On November 3, New Jersey poet and National Book Award Winner
Gerald Stern read from his work at Richard Stockton college.
See, this is what Stern's poetry can do to you. You read along innocently enough, as though you are listening to a friend tell a story, and then all of a sudden a line halts you in your tracks. You stop, you reminisce, remembering when you shared a place or a feeling with the poet. When Stern writes of Paris, if you have been there, you remember your own Paris, which for me was San Francisco; when Stern writes of a man "who carried a leather bag of small red Bibles" and sang on the street, for some reason I'm reminded here of little toothless old Millie, who wore a bonnet like a child's and sold roses from a tray in the bars of Northbeach. Among dozens of other places, Stern sets his poetry in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Newark, Princeton, New Brunswick, New York City, and so if you are here in New Jersey he is on your turf.
Following an opening reading by Stephen Dunn, Stern walked to center stage in front of an audience of a few hundred, which did not quite fill the small auditorium. He was a roundish, not very tall man, with a smile and a bald crown with wisps of hair sticking out to the sides. He wore baggy dark corduroy pants and a loose pale green shirt, and off and on a spiffy gray felt hat. He had big, rich voice that sometimes moved into Yiddish or French, and he had a story to go with every poem; he

This Time: New and Selected Poems" by Gerald Stern, is a great introduction to this poet, who received the National Book Award for Poetry for this publication. He has also been the recipient of such important prizes as The Lamont Poetry Prize and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. This Time collects poems from seven of Stern's previous volumes, beginning with selections from his 1971 collection, Rejoicings, and on through 1995's Odd Mercy. Fourteen new poems close the book. Collections such as This Time are like the "best of" albums that musicians put out. They take the favorites of a poet's past books and bind them together to give the reader a really fine overview of a poet. They also allow you to observe how a poet may change or adapt their style over many years. I found myself drawn more to Stern's earlier work, which was a bit sparer and tighter in feel. Sometimes the brief but carefully crafted, powerful poem best says what you want to say. The selections from Rejoicing in particular were more allegorical, tending toward abstraction. I enjoyed the dreamy quality of many of these poems, and also the stark unexpected turns they took, especially "In Kovalchik's Garden", where a cardinal

The fact that no one had ever seen Lorca run Feet Olympics
The fact that no one had ever seen Lorca run had only to do with the legend of his clumsiness, for one foot was shorter than the other and he was terrified to cross the street by himself, though dogs barking in the mountains above him brought him back to his senses and caused him when he was alone to try leaping and skipping the way you did and he tried the hop, skip, and jump he learned from the 1932 Olympics and loaded the left side of his mouth with green tobacco when he was only eleven, for he took comfort in every form of degradation; and it was in John Jay Hall in 1949 that Geraldo from Pittsburgh made a personal connection

  • Gerald Stern 1925–
American poet. The following entry presents criticism of Stern's work through 1995. For further information on his life and career, see CLC , Volume 40.
    INTRODUCTION
Stern's poetry is noted for its energetic language, rich imagery, and skillful balance of emotional expressiveness and concrete physical detail. His poems are usually written in a conversational "confessional" style, yet they are also frequently lyrical and sometimes contain traces of surreal imagery. Stern's preoccupation with the self, his use of long, incantory lines, and his characteristically exuberant, celebratory tone have led many reviewers to compare his work to that of Walt Whitman. However, several critics have noted that Whitman's "self" is meant to encompass a broad spectrum of humanity, while Stern's refers to an intensely personal figure or speaker. According to Stern, he's "a Whitmanian who doesn't like to be called a Whitmanian."
    Biographical Information
Born February 22, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Stern attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a B.A. in 1947, and Columbia University, where he received an M.A. in 1949. After serving in the United States Army Air Corps, he married Patricia Miller in 1952. During the 1960s and 1970s Stern taught at Temple University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Somerset County College in New Jersey. In 1973 Stern published his first collections of poetry
