SPEECH ON THE DEAD MEDIA PROJECT
Public Address on Dead Media Project by Bruce Sterling
bruces@well.com
Literary Freeware: Not for Commercial Use "The Life and Death of Media" Speech at Sixth International Symposium on Electronic Art ISEA '95 Montreal Sept 19 1995 Hello, my name's Bruce Sterling, I'm a science fiction writer from Austin, Texas. It's very pleasant to be here in Montreal at an event like ISEA. It's professionally pleasant. As a science fiction writer, I have a deep and abiding interest in electronic arts. In multimedia. In computer networks. In CD-ROM. In virtual reality. In the Internet. In the Information Superhighway. In cyberspace. Basically, the less likely it sounds, the better I like it. These are topics that I dare not ignore. It would mean ignoring the nervous system of the information society. The laboratory of information science. The battlefield of information warfare. The marketplace of the information economy. As well as one of the strangest areas of the art world. When Jules Verne invented science fiction, Jules Verne was a stockbroker. Almost by accident, Jules Verne discovered that nineteenth century France had a large market for techno-thrillers. Jules Verne discovered and fed the tremendous 19th-century cultural appetite for romantic, futuristic technologies like the hot-air- balloon, the electric submarine, the airborne battleship, the moon cannon.

I Wouldn't Write a Book Review About This, But Maybe I'll Blog It
By Bruce Sterling http://www.lrb.co.uk/v30/n02/jone01_.html Link: LRB · Thomas Jones: Short Cuts "Publishing an anthology of blogs in book form, then, would appear to make about as much sense as broadcasting Singin’ in the Rain on the wireless: you’d still get to hear Donald O’Connor singing ‘Make ’em Laugh’, but it’s not quite the same if you can’t see him walking along the piano keys, dancing with the headless dummy and running up the walls. But that hasn’t stopped Sarah Boxer, a former New York Times reporter, from putting together a collection called Ultimate Blogs: Masterworks from the Wild Web (Vintage, $14.95) – on the face of it, an early contender for most pointless book of the year. "Boxer isn’t unaware of the potential contradictions in her project: ‘The thing you are now holding in your hand is a book, not a computer,’ she writes. No arguing with that. ‘You cannot click on a link in a printed book. And a book looks weird when its pages are littered with website addresses and very long quotes and quotes within quotes. So, no links here, folks.’ She also says she hasn’t included any blogs about gadgets, sport, gossip or politics (though, in fact, she has), because ‘their posts get stale.’ ‘Where then,’ she asks, ‘does that leave an anthology of blogs?’ Where indeed? ‘If the blogs in here were not going to be timely . . . they had better well be timeless, and if they were not going to be linky, they had better well be self-contained.’

Ever wonder where the authors of science fiction get their ideas? Judge the process for yourself in the MIRRORSHADES Postmodern Archive on the WELL . It's a mix of weblog, archive, and commonplace book, plucked out of Bruce Sterling's email and from websites worldwide. Currently tracking: art, science, design, environmental catastrophe, crime, virtual war, rip-off cybercreeps, dead media, anarchy, spooks, sickening outrages and cheering developments. If it's in MIRRORSHADES, it's already science fiction. The world just doesn't know it yet.

Janis made it most of the way back from Seoul, but there was weather over the Alps, so Janis is stuck in Geneva. Luckily Janis has plenty of friends and admirers there. Geneva seems to be one of her biggest centers of supportive Janis blog-fandom. You've got to admire the carefree way Janis can make do anywhere on the planet! Still, there's something comical about my being the only geek in the Torino Cyberculture Zone whose deck is that flimsy and teensy. So today I went to check out the opposite design gambit, which is the Samsung-Olivetti SeeMonster. As the name suggests, it's a hefty Italo-Korean interactive designer coffee table with an eight-handed, 40-fingered 3-D touchscreen (for multiple house guests). Do we plan to entertain our fellow geopundits? Will the SeeMonster double as a billiard table? *Chi lo sa?*

Viridian Note 00496: Al Gore Wins Nobel
by Bruce Sterling
Key concepts:
Al Gore, Cuba, emergencies
Attention Conservation Notice:
great news for greenies all spoilt by glum Viridian futurism.
(((I'm now living in Torino, where the locals are vigorously rebuilding their former fossil-fuel car capital into an artsy creative-class design metropolis.)))
http://www.torinoworlddesigncapital.it/portale/en/
(((Amazingly, even Fiat, whose decline nearly wrecked this city, has a design hit in their new small urban car. What luck! Or was it design skill?))) http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_03/b3967019.htm (((It's fabulous to be on the ground where Europeans are visibly re-creating their infrastructure in such a design-centric, immediate fashion. There's something exhilarating about it... because it's not a Viridian Pope-Emperor theoretical design engagement; I mean, they're literally ripping up the street outside here and installing light urban rail. I wouldn't call it Oz; it's just an Italian industrial burg; but their previous situation was just so grim, glum, unbearable, palpably doomed and clearly unsustainable that they pretty much had to swallow the blue pill and leap for the unknown. So they suffered == but changed. Now one sees eerie stuff like THIS == a smokestack turned into a steeple dedicated to the Shroud of Turin.)))

More options on the Contributions page. T H A N K S ! Ladies and gentlemen, after two, full, glorious, eccentric years, it's time for me to lay aside my Schism Matrix microphone. If you do still want more, dear audience, there will be more, within another venue. Eileen Gunn will be turning out the Schism Matrix stage-lights here while I clamber into the comedian tour bus. I'm off to create a new, as-yet-untitled weblog for WIRED magazine. They are expanding a blogosphere from their online presence, and they have asked me, a WIRED Contributing Editor, to pitch in and help them. And so I will. For lo, they are my people at WIRED. I was present at the days of creation for The Infinite Matrix, but I was the cover-boy for WIRED's very first issue, way back in those legendary, romantic days of the cyberPleistocene. WIRED sent me into Moscow, into Turkish Cyprus, into subterranean cyclotrons, the Eiffel Tower and Fort Knox. God help me, I have never been able to tell those characters "No." At the moment, I'm still learning how the html code works over there. I reckon this is likely to be kind of a San Francisco crowd, you know, with higher bandwidth and more Hollywood-style, actor-for-governor, dancing-baloney. We'll just have to check that out and see for ourselves, won't we?
