Born in 1902 in Salinas, California, Steinbeck attended Stanford University before working at a series of mostly blue-collar jobs and embarking on his literary career. Profoundly committed to social progress, he used his writing to raise issues of labor exploitation and the plight of the common man, penning some of the greatest American novels of the twentieth century and winning such prestigious awards as the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He received the Nobel Prize in 1962, "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception." Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures. Novels Cup of Gold The Pastures of Heaven The Red Pony To A God Unknown ... The John Steinbeck Map of America features popular images from Steinbeck's novels such as Tortilla Flat The Grapes of Wrath (1939), and The Pearl (1947). The outline of the map shows the route of Travels with Charley (1962), and the central portion consists of detailed street maps of the California towns of Salinas and Monterey, where Steinbeck lived and set some of his works. Numbers on the maps are keyed to lists of events in Steinbeck's novels. A portrait of the author appears in the upper right corner. Research and design of the map were done by Molly Maguire, who produced a series of literary maps in the 1980s. Home Overview Treasure Talks Learn More About It ... Credits

Of Mice and Men Factsheet Background to Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. His most famous books were written in the 1930s and 1940s, and are set in California. They deal with the lives and problems of working people. Many of the characters in his books are immigrants from Mexico or from other parts of the United States who went to California looking for work or a better life. John Steinbeck 1902 - 1968
The Setting of Of Mice and Men Of Mice and Men is set in the farmland of the Salinas valley, where John Steinbeck was born and which he knew all his life. Steinbeck's father owned land in the area, and as a young man Steinbeck had worked as a farm hand. The ranch in the story is near Soledad, which is south-east of Salinas on the Salinas river. Weed is nearby. The countryside described at the beginning of the book, and the ranch itself, would have been very familiar to John Steinbeck. Map showing California south of San Francisco
Migrant Farm Workers By the time that Of Mice and Men was published almost half of America's grain was harvested by huge combine harvesters. Five men could do what would have taken 350 men a few years earlier. George and Lennie are some of the last of the migrant farm workers. Huge numbers of men travelled the countryside between the 1880s and the early 1930s harvesting wheat. They earned $2.50 or $3.00 a day, plus food and very basic accommodation. During the 1930s, when there was very bad unemployment in the United States, agencies were set up under the New Deal to send farmworkers to where they were needed. George and Lennie got their works cards from Murray and Ready's, one of these agencies.

Introduction of Unit
This unit's purpose is to develop critical thinking skills through an understanding of just what intelligence is. Understanding the semantics of intelligence thereby enhances a student's capacity to comprehend and navigate society. The label "intelligent" has impacted our society like no other. Scholars have written volumes trying to find an encompassing definition for what intelligence is, but still have not come to general agreement on simple explanations for such difficult skill to measure. 6 Because intelligence is necessarily culturally defined, social policies are organized around an imaginary meritocracy that prioritizes intelligence. Indeed, one can be labeled handicapped or deficient for a lack of intelligence. Without a proper, standard definition of what exactly intelligence is, there are social markers like the SAT can determine college eligibility and limits social potential. Thus, I have chosen to teach students about the false concepts inherent in accepted definitions of intelligence and how this effects the individual within society. 6
