"I think I would like to write the story of this whole valley, of all the little towns and all the farms and the ranches in the wilder hills. I can see how I would like to do it so that it would be the valley of the world. Steinbeck's letter to George Albee, Salinas, 1933

Teaching John Steinbeck

Author: John Steinbeck
The novels of John Steinbeck inhabit many bookshelves in classrooms across the United States. High school English classes spend weeks exploring the details of Steinbeck's novels; the complex relationships, the labyrinthine conflicts, and the characters and their ghosts, amid his strong, yet luxuriant language.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students read Steinbeck as a social critic or merely as a story-teller. The task is to define Steinbeck as a writer in the mode of the twenties. One must define such terms as illusion, mythic, archetype, depth psychology, and symbol in establishing his artistic process. Secondly, one must show a student the ongoing conflict in Steinbeck's work between expectation and change, consciousness and altered circumstances. Students love reading Steinbeck; I cite passages from his letters to indicate his artistic interests in the above ideas. I point out particular details in the works to support my interpretations. In "Flight," I have them look for description of an Indian; I explore similar conflicts and ways of perceiving in our daily lives. For a discussion of "Flight," I ask them to define the stereotypical Indian brave, stereotypical Mexican children, the role of school and education in cultural assimilation, the future of Indian culture. I offer the view of Steinbeck as a modern artist who sees the artist's role as analogous to a psychiatrist's: to know thyself. If each work is seen as dealing with a different human drivesexual repression, religious quest, rejection, self-hate, security and certainty of tradition, the need to belong, etc.Steinbeck's work takes on a pattern. By all means, link such drives to similar ones readily found in students' lives.

John Steinbeck was born in California in 1902, near to Solidad. Although his family was wealthy, he was interested in the lives of the farm labourers and spent time working with them. He used his experiences as material for his writing. He wrote a number of novels about poor people who worked on the land and dreamed of a better life, including The Grapes of Wrath , which is the heart-rending story of a family's struggle to escape the dust bowl of the West to reach California. Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962, six years before his death in 1968. Previous Next http://www.bbc.co.uk/gcsebitesize

The student will look at the events in john steinbeck´s life and make an educated guess about what caused him to write about the humble people of the world.
http://www.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/score/pearl/pearltg.html
http://www.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/score/pearl/pearltg.html unit written by Linda Taggart-Fregoso
Introduction
This supplemental CyberGuide to The Pearl was developed by Linda Taggart-Fregoso in the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project , funded by the California Technology Assistance Program (CTAP) and the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA)

The links here have been scrutinized for their grade and age appropriateness; however, contents of links on the World Wide Web change continuously. It is advisable that teachers review all links before introducing CyberGuides to students.
The Pearl depicts the themes of greed and lost dreams, and this CyberGuide presents an opportunity for students to explore these concepts. Through gradual stages of change, Kino realizes that money is not always the most important thing in life. This unit asks students to consider the following questions:
  • Why do good writers use symbolism in their writing? Why is point of view an important technique to consider when writing? Who is John Steinbeck?

    About the Author
Preface Introduction Historical Context About the Author ... Teacher's Guide John Steinbeck, 1902-1968 The California farm town of Salinas welcomed John Steinbeck into the world on February 27, 1902, but the welcome eventually wore out. From an early age, his schoolteacher mother imparted a love of learning and language. From his bankrupt father, Steinbeck acquired a hypersensitivity to social nuances, a profound empathy for the underprivileged, and a strong work ethic that rarely left him. After receiving his diploma from Salinas High in 1919, he alternated work as a field hand with sporadic attendance at Stanford University. His fourth novel, Tortilla Flat (1935), made his name as a writer. Then, drawing on his strengths-deep regard for his native California, and empathy for his fellow hard workers-Steinbeck spent years researching and a miraculous five months writing The Grapes of Wrath . Published in 1939, it won him both the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and decades of enmity from his hometown, where he was viewed as a traitor to his (middle) class. In 1940, critically and commercially successful films of both

Return John Steinbeck In 1935, when James Fitzgerald made this portrait of him, John Steinbeck was on the verge of the critical success that would distinguish him as one of America's foremost authors. Steinbeck, who had just lost both parents, found that writing provided an emotional release; he had written Tortilla Flat while his parents lay ill. "As long as we can eat and write more books, that's really all I require," Steinbeck wrote a friend in late 1933.
Fitzgerald shared Steinbeck's self-reliant approach to artistic creativity, although their friendship was stormy. The two were part of a circle of artists, writers, and intellectuals who gathered around the charismatic figure of marine biologist Edward ("Doc") Ricketts in Monterey, California. Fitzgerald's portrait is an attempt to capture the essence of Steinbeck's personality and creative spirit, rather than a response to a single sitting. The dominant role of the dark pullover and deep shadow over the left side of Steinbeck's face evoke his famously reclusive persona.

by Janice Albert At this writing, seven Nobel prizes in Literature have been awarded to authors working in the United States: Pearl S. Buck, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Sinclair Lewis, Toni Morrison, Eugene O'Neill, and John Steinbeck. Of these, one was born and raised in California, and the subject matter of his principal work is California, and that author is John Steinbeck Stanford Magazine , calls the relationship "mutually unappreciative, even debilitating." John Steinbeck:
Wax Museum poster at Cannery Row In 1923, he attended a summer course at the Hopkins Marine Station near Monterey, read the work of Elof Boodin and William Emerson Ritter, and learned to observe marine life in its natural habitat. Recognizing his love of scientific observation prepared him for his later friendship with Ed Ricketts and helped him form his ideas of human beings as part of a larger natural system. It is interesting to note that Steinbeck at age 21 was studying only a few miles away from Carmel, where Robinson Jeffers , age 38, was building his Tor House and writing about humanity with similar detachment. (We know that Jeffers was his mother's favorite poet.)

On this day in 1939, John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath was published. Although Steinbeck believed that he had succeeded in his "very grave attempt to do a first-rate piece of work," he was so convinced that his "revolutionary" book would be unpopular and unread that he tried to dissuade his publisher from having a large first printing. Steinbeck's Discontent
On this day in 1961 John Steinbeck's The Winter of Our Discontent was published. The book was written during Steinbeck's despair that fame or friends had led him away from "true things" to "shiny easy things," and with a hope that he could "slough off nearly fifteen years and go back and start again at the split path where I went wrong." The first reviews were mixed, though Steinbeck would get the Nobel the following year.
