John Steinbeck (1902-1968) American novelist, story writer, playwright, and essayist. John Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. He is best remembered for THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1939), a novel widely considered to be a 20th-century classic. The impact of the book has been compared to that of Harriet Beecher Stowe 's Uncle Tom's Cabin . Steinbeck's epic about the migration of the Joad family, driven from its bit of land in Oklahoma to California, provoked a wide debate about the hard lot of migrant laborers, and helped to put an agricultural reform into effect. "Man, unlike any other thing organic or inorganic in the universe, grows beyond his work, walks up in the stairs of his concepts, emerges ahead of his accomplishments ." (from The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. His native region of Monterey Bay was later the setting for most of his fiction. "We were poor people with a hell of a lot of land which made us think we were rich people," the author once recalled. Steinbeck's father was a county treasurer. From his mother, a teacher, Steinbeck learned to love books. Among his early favorites were Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment , Milton's Paradise Lost , and Le Morte d'Arthur Steinbeck attended the local high school and worked on farms and ranches during his vacations. To finance his education, he held many jobs and sometimes dropped out of college for whole quarters. Between 1920 and 1926, he studied marine biology at Stanford University, but did not take a degree

Biography
John Steinbeck (1902-1968), born in Salinas, California, came from a family of moderate means. He worked his way through college at Stanford University but never graduated. In 1925 he went to New York, where he tried for a few years to establish himself as a free-lance writer, but he failed and returned to California. After publishing some novels and short stories, Steinbeck first became widely known with Tortilla Flat (1935), a series of humorous stories about Monterey paisanos.
Steinbeck's novels can all be classified as social novels dealing with the economic problems of rural labour, but there is also a streak of worship of the soil in his books, which does not always agree with his matter-of-fact sociological approach. After the rough and earthy humour of Tortilla Flat, he moved on to more serious fiction, often aggressive in its social criticism, to In Dubious Battle (1936), which deals with the strikes of the migratory fruit pickers on California plantations. This was followed by

Biography of John Steinbeck (1902-1968)
John Steinbeck John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902, and spent most of his life in Monterey County, the setting of much of his fiction. He attended Stanford University intermittently between 1920 and 1926. Steinbeck did not graduate from Stanford, but instead chose to support himself through manual labor while writing. His experiences among the working classes in California lent authenticity to his depiction of the lives of the workers, who remain the central characters of his most important novels. Steinbeck's first novel, Cup of Gold , was published in 1929, and was followed by The Pastures of Heaven and, in 1933, To a God Unknown . However, his first three novels were unsuccessful both critically and commercially. Steinbeck had his first success with Tortilla Flat (1935), an affectionate and gently humorous story about Mexican-Americans. Nevertheless, his subsequent novel, In Dubious Battle (1936) was notable for its markedly grim outlook. This novel is a classic account of a strike by agricultural laborers and the pair of Marxist labor organizers who engineer it, and is the first Steinbeck novel to encompass the striking social commentary that characterizes his most notable works. Steinbeck received even greater acclaim for the novella

John Steinbeck used real people and places as models for his 1945 novel, Cannery Row. You are standing in the middle of the novel’s setting as depicted in the aerial photograph. The Wing Chong Market was a Chinese grocery and dry-goods store, and the La Ida Cafe was where Eddie the part-time bar tender poured leftover drinks in a jug for Mack and the boys. The Western Biological Laboratory was Doc’s house and lab . The Bear Flag Restaurant was the bordello operated by Dora Flood (Lone Star Cafe of Flora Woods), and the Palace Flophouse was home to Mack and the boys. The “chicken walk” was a cleated ramp up the embankment from the railroad tracks. The “vacant lot” was filled with pipes, boilers, and cast-off cannery equipment. THE NEIGHBORHOOD The real Cannery Row was quite a resource for the fertile mind of America’s Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning author, who’s name will forever remain inseparable from the street: John Steinbeck (1902 - 1968).

    John Steinbeck
Although many of his works deserve note, including Of Mice and Men and Travels with Charley , it is primarily for The Grapes of Wrath that I include Steinbeck here. Along with The Great Gatsby , I consider The Grapes of Wrath to be the Great American Novel. Steinbeck's tale of the Joad family's travails through the Dust Bowl not only manages to evoke the hardship of the Great Depression it is also a stinging indictment of laissez-faire capitalism and a cry for a more vibrant democratic community. I read the Reverend Casey, who gives up his Christianity in order to preach the gospel of love, as Steinbeck's prophet of a transfigured, communal democratic life. Although both Ma Joad and the government camps of California aspire to this ideal, neither in the end embodies Steinbeck's meaning- the former is too familial and the latter too bureaucratic. Indeed, in the end, it is only the children of the Joads, Tom and Rosasharn, who have embraced Steinbeck's democratic vision - Tom has left his family to organize other citizens, while Rosasharn gives up her mother's milk to a desperate stranger. Both have expanded the traditional ties of family to include their fellow men and woman. What is the hope of democracy is not this? Indeed, as the religious connotation of the title implies, what is the message of Christ, if not this? Steinbeck's book carries not only a promise but a threat. In various asides scattered throughout the book, Steinbeck captures the dehumanizing effect of laissez-faire capitalism. Farms are torn down and families are lost under the grinding gears of a profit margin that no one- not the farmers, the evictors, the banks, or the East, really controls anymore. In the last scene of the book, as the remaining Joads escape a flood that covers everything in its wake, Steinbeck's message is clear. The Great Depression, the breakdown of New Era capitalism, was an act of divine retribution- God has trampled out the vintage where the Grapes of Wrath were stored. Now, the survivors must band together and try to establish a society that better fulfills the promise of democratic life.

John Ernst Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, on February 27, 1902 of German and Irish ancestry. His father, John Steinbeck, Sr., served as the County Treasurer while his mother, Olive (Hamilton) Steinbeck, a former school teacher, fostered Steinbeck's love of reading and the written word. During summers he worked as a hired hand on nearby ranches, nourishing his impression of the California countryside and its people. After graduating from Salinas High School in 1919, Steinbeck attended Stanford University. Originally an English major, he pursued a program of independent study and his attendance was sporadic. During this time he worked periodically at various jobs and left Stanford permanently in 1925 to pursue his writing career in New York. However, he was unsuccessful in getting any of his writing published and finally returned to California. His first novel
