Comments Great post. I've always loved Steadman's illustrations and it's nice to see some of the his lesser known work. HST cast a large shadow over Steadman (not necessarily to the bad of course) and I suspect he might have had a different trajectory in the art world with less 'infamy of association'. After a controlled frenzy in Vegas and depletion of a set amount of funds, the three "get the hell out into the Nevada desert". As they approach Rachel, "The desert mobile home site of UFO's, Ralph and Anna notice changes in Joe's character - excessive smoking, compulsive gambling, and a general urgency. Joe was, after all, the one that didn't believe. When Joe doesn't return from the restroom at a lunch place, Ralph and Anna continue on to Area 51. There they are reunited with Joe at the rear entrance, except that he is followed by two turkeys that seem to know who they are...

    RALPH STEADMAN HANGS OUT
Ralph Steadman recently spent time in Denver on an international book tour. Ralph was promoting his new book entitled "The Joke's Over," but he found time in his busy schedule to come down to Flying Dog Brewery, where he met with all of us underling employees for a few hours. Once we got a few brews into his belly, Ralph did some original art for employees, as seen in this video. Stop by our Tasting Room at 2401 Blake Street, Denver, Colorado for some craft beer and a look at original Ralph Steadman art! Posted by Owen at 06:12 AM Permalink COMMENT ON THIS VIDEO

Ralph Steadman has created the RalphFancyGoods.com brand to offer officially licensed items bearing his art work. There is lots of neat stuff coming down the line, so keep checking back. CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE GOODS A picture of Trevor NUCKSTER, head of Transport Division @RALPHFANCYGOODS and son-in-law of Llewellyn Niblick FANCY who made his fortune smuggling immigrant workers from his home town of MOLD in North Wales to America to pick winkles off the beaches along the coast of Maine. Winkles became the main ingredient in the making of soup for the masses. His only rival at the time was Johann Heinrich Heinz who also provided food for the masses and who inadvertently made a millionaire of Page Woodcock who devised an antidote to the certain effects of Heinz's baked beans with his wind pills. However it was the Fancy family who lucked out during the Great Depression of the '30's by instigating soup kitchens across the continent, a humanitarian gesture aided by the humble winkle, which nevertheless made the Fancy family another fortune. 'DO UNTO OTHERS' became the family motto, later bastardised into 'Do unto others what you damn well like. I'm OK'. Today, the Fancy family, headed by Ralph FANCY, has moved into the 'goods' market, an umbrella term covering everything from personalised fly zips to potato chip tweezers. Goods are in production and only a raft of development hiccups stand in the way of progress...

COOKBOOK SHELF the g rapes of ralph WINE A CCORDING TO RALPH STEADMAN
    By Ralph Steadman,
Harcourt Brace, 224 pages Ralph Steadman is, of course, best known as the illustrator of Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." He has also splashed and scratched ink for the poet Ted Hughes and for the 50th anniversary issue of George Orwell's "Animal Farm." Now, with the publication of his irreverent and deeply funny "The Grapes of Ralph," he reveals himself to be an oenophile of the very first rank as well. It may be instructive to go further: Steadman, in late middle age, has brought the intellectual aesthetic of punk rock to the study of viticulture. "The Grapes of Ralph" isn't quite Iggy Pop speaking on the economy of South Korea on "The McLaughlin Group" but it's close. "Wine is far too noble, patient and even courageous for ... phoney elegance," Steadman writes in his introduction. And then he proves the point, with twisted satirical honesty of a sort almost never seen in the canon of tediously pretentious wine writing. Championing wine as it tears down those who take it too seriously, "The Grapes of Ralph" is extremely refreshing. "A 1989 Chardonnay," he writes of a bottle he had in Chile. "Very meaty." Enough said. The book has an interesting history. Commissioned by the British wine retailer Oddbins to illustrate a catalog, Steadman traveled with the firm's buyers all over the winemaking regions of the world, keeping diaries both drawn and written. "The Grapes of Ralph" is the result. With dispatches from Bulgaria, France, Germany, Portugal, the Canary Islands, Italy, Australia, California, Peru and Chile (what no Long Island?), he provides a fascinating mixture of fantasy, personal profile, history and impressions that together give a clear and intelligent portrait of the world of wine.

    I am a sports columnist/ author/TV writer-producer with an unusual sports-related cartoon feature idea.
For this to be a success, I need a talented partner someone capable of delivering dynamic, slightly-to-semi unorthodox pen and ink drawings of various athletic action, as well as being able to produce compelling caricatures of a wide range of sports personalities.
you don't have to be a sports geek, but you must understand the world somewhat. the plan for this project is to become a recurring feature in a national publication, and eventually spin off as a book.
if you are interested, please send me two or three jpegs of your work feel free to watermark it, or do whatever to make it unusable i just want to get a visual sense of whether the partnership could work out as soon as possible, so nobody's time is wasted...

    Profile: Ralph Steadman
By John Burns Hunter S. Thompson—gonzo writer, sperm donor for the New Journalism (Tom Wolfe was just the midwife), great admirer of drugs, drink, and guns—killed himself last year. His frequent collaborator Ralph Steadman, whose wonderfully ink-sprayed drawings accompanied many of Thompson’s books and articles, has clearly been mulling over their friendship and has now published a most peculiar reminiscence. The Joke’s Over: Bruised Memories of Gonzo: Hunter S. Thompson and Me (Harcourt, $32.95) is a memorial to Dr. Gonzo but maybe more, too: a way to get over the “rabid, downright wretched, cheating, low-down sonofabitch”.
Speaking from the studio behind his house in southeast England, Steadman is unrepentant about describing Thompson that way. “I thought he’d appreciate it,” Steadman says with a charming English/Welsh accent. His is a shambling, brandy-scented conversational style. He starts with Voltaire (“I was just thinking of a Voltaire thing the other day: ‘Those who can make you believe absurdity can make you commit atrocity.’ Which is exactly what’s happened in Iraq”) and free-associates like someone who saw the ’70s firsthand.
