When most people think of HST, they also think of Ralph Steadman, whose splattery artwork often accompanied HST's work. You can visit Ralph's official site and check out his journal as well. If you are looking for Steadman items, I highly recommend John Dinsmore and Red Snapper Books eBay is also a good source of books and whiskey items. You can find an appearance by Ralph Steadman on Breakfast with Hunter btw. Note: There are going to be a few broken links until the whole section is back up.
Articles About Ralph Steadman
Books By Ralph Steadman
Besides being an accomplished illustrator, Ralph Steadman is an accomplished writer as well. I have most of his children's books and they are really endearing. My favourite one is The Little Red Computer
Gardening Hints
The gardening hints were a series of columns that ran in the letters section of Rolling Stone . It was columns like this that seemed to connect readers with writers and gave the magazine a very, heh, earthy feel.

Glyn Jones,Bangor Ralph Steadman's father and Mr Tommy Sudelle of Pensarn used to beachcomb together on Pensarn beach. They would recover "useful pieces of wood" back to Mr Sudelle's shed where they would saw them up into even more convenient useful sizes! I have a drawing by Ralph showing his quite tall father dressed in a long black coat looking disparagingly down on rather diminutive Mr Sudelle looking up rather sadly after he had cut his finger on the circular saw cutting the timber. Mr Suddele(Uncle Tom) worked in the ticket office at Pensarn railway station. He and Aunty Dollie practised regularly on viola or fiddle%! 20and piano in a quartet at their home in Pensarn. My daughter still plays their piano.

I'm sitting in an epic traffic jam on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood on early evening October 31st, 2006 as George W. Bush staggers in front of my car, accompanied by Harry Potter and Paris Hilton. I slam on my brakes to keep from mowing them down, as tempting as it is, and repeatedly blow my horn to express my displeasure.
"Whatsa matta, sweetie? Havin' a bad day?" asks Ms. Hilton, who displays a three-day growth and an Adam's apple.
In fact, I'm having a bad century thus far. President Bush flips me the bird as she passes by and I'm rendered deaf and jumpy by the ubiquitous, hovering LAPD helicopters policing the annual Halloween parade. My loathing for this spectacle looms on a list just under Los Angeles, the United States of America, and the human race in vehemence. The relegation of the act of celebration to specific holidays has always mystified me. Spontaneity does not fit into capitalism's schedule and these costumed junior studio executives will need to cram in as much acceptably aberrant behavior as possible tonight before they return hungover to their cubicles tomorrow.

Some see psychogeography as concerned with the personality of place itself. Thus, in his novels and biographies, Peter Ackroyd practises a " phrenology" of London. He feels up the bumps of the city and so defines its character and proclivities. To read Ackroyd is to become aware that while the physical and political structure of London may have mutated down the ages, as torrents of men and women coursed through its streets, yet their individuality is as nothing, set beside the city's own enduring personification.

    S YNOPSIS
From Chile to California, South Africa to Alsace, Ralph Steadman has seen the best of the world's wine-producing regions. On a search for the unique and original, he meets Aurelio Montes, the Chilean winemaker who planted syrah vines on a rocky, south-facing hill in order to "steal the wild complexity of the mountain's soul." In Spain, he learns of the white chalky soil called albariza that produces the sherry of the Jerez region. In California, the author describes crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, driving up into Marin County, and meeting enthusiastic winemakers whose vineyards sit precariously on the San Andreas fault. As the journey continues on through Burgundy, Champagne, and Sicily, Steadman brings the landscape and its people to life with pictures and prose.

    Ralph Steadman joins the cult
I've always been a massive admirer of Ralph Steadman , so I was thrilled that, in today's Observer , Steadman picked Cult as his most noteworthy book of 2007. It was Steadman, of course, who provided the legendary illustrations for Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas; a Savage Journey into the American Dream . We still await a Hunter S. Thompson/Ralph Steadman to co-produce a Fear and Loathing in Silicon Valley an equally savage journey into the American Dream. I can only hope that there's some young writer or artist embedded in the Googleplex, taking notes on Sergei and Larry's moral excesses and sketching Eric Schmidt's chin. Fear and Loathing in Silicon Valley is too monstrous a fish to miss. Somebody is going to spear it. In the meantime, here's the legendary Steadman on why he was seduced by Cult I took two challenging books to read in a cabin on Lake Huron in Canada in September: The Idiot by Dostoevsky (Penguin Classics) and District and Circle by Seamus Heaney (Faber). But what instead caught my eye was a 'reader's proof' lying on the coffee table of The Cult of the Amateur (Nicholas Brealey) by Andrew Keen. He has had the temerity to point out that our search for instant wisdom through, say, Google and Wikipedia provides not necessarily what is most true or reliable - merely what is most popular. I read it in one sitting then went outside to fish for our supper, firmly believing that the poor fish that swallows my squirming worm on a barbed hook is infinitely smarter than the idiot on the other end holding the rod.

    Sunday Book Review
    Poison Pen and Ink

By WILL BLYTHE Published: November 19, 2006 The illustrator Ralph Steadman is a brave man. Not only did he survive humiliation, gunplay and hallucinatory despair through decades of collaboration with the legendarily difficult journalist Hunter S. Thompson, he decided to include as the epigraph to his memoir of those adventures a remark of Thompson’s: “Don’t write, Ralph. You’ll bring shame on your family.” Skip to next paragraph Harcourt Steadman impersonating Thompson.
    THE JOKE’S OVER
Bruised Memories: Gonzo, Hunter S. Thompson, and Me. By Ralph Steadman. Illustrated. 396 pp. Harcourt. $26.
    Forum: Book News and Reviews
To follow this with a 400-page ramble is the sort of dare the prank-loving Thompson, who committed suicide last year, might have appreciated. For the sake of the Steadman family’s honor, it should be said that “The Joke’s Over” features a lot of Steadman’s drawings, though reduced too much from their original size. True, these pictures don’t exactly constitute writing, but they are brilliant. Splattery explosions of ink, detonated in the presence of politicians and stolid middle-class citizens, they stand as the mangling visions of a 20th-century Hogarth. When they originally appeared (usually in Rolling Stone), lodged amid Thompson’s prose, the images served as the visual equivalent of the writer’s “gonzo” — a term Steadman defines as “controlled madness” — explorations of America.
