Ralph Steadman, Gonzo
Published February 11th, 2004 in Without Limits Ralph Steadman worked with Hunter S. Thompson and helped originate Gonzo journalism, creating images that are the visual equivalent of Thompson’s writings. He has perfected splattering ink. "Nobody I have read knows what GONZO is, was, or ever could be, not even Hunter, and if he doesn’t know what it is, I do. I am the only one who does. Gonzo make you feel GOod rather than BAd, which is BANZO. Pursue BANZO if you must but don”t blame me or even credit me or you will make me sick. GOnzo is GOod. BAnzo is BAd. It is a simple equation."

    Ralph Steadman
Ralph Steadman was born in 1936. He started as a cartoonist and through the years diversified into many fields of creativity. He has illustrated such classics as "Alice in Wonderland", "Treasure Island" and "Animal Farm". His own books include the lives of Sigmund Freud and Leonardo da Vinci and "The Big I Am", the story of God. With American writer Hunter S. Thompson he collaborated in the birth of GONZO journalism, the definitive book in the genre being "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", which was made into a feature film. He is also a printmaker. His prints include a series of etchings on writers from William Shakespeare to William Burroughs. In 1989 he wrote the libretto for an eco-oratorio called "Plague and the Moonflower" which has been performed in five cathedrals in the UK and was the subject of a BBC 2 film in 1994. He has traveled the world's vineyards and distilleries for Oddbins, which culminated in his two prize-winning books, "The Grapes of Ralph" and "Still Life With Bottle". He has an Honorary D. Litt from the University of Kent. For further information and a list of works currently available

While it's clear that Steadman loved Thompson and that this was a bit of black humor (or maybe Steadman didn't at first believe the news), it's also clear that Thompson could be difficult, defensive, and selfish. Whether it was their shared love of "gonzo" journalism that kept them together, or whether once united their highest worth to the outside world was as a team, their relationship endured to the end. It was a wild ride and not always an easy one.
is a must-read for any Hunter S. Thompson fan, and for the many Ralph Steadman fans as well. Built on anecdotes from both their famous collaborations and from good ideas that collapsed under the weight of their drug-addled revelry, the book offers almost 400 pages worth of stories that only someone in the midst of the gonzo action could tell you.

Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, June 1974 You must have been gutted when HST committed suicide. What was he like as a character? Did he ever frighten you? What is Gonzo Ralph? I like the gonzo logo that HST used for his Sheriff of Aspen campaign. Have you taken much peyote in your time? When I arrived I was purple with palpitations and she got a doctor right away and he gave me a librium injection that put me out for about 24 hours. The irony of all this was that before this happened I put her in hospital with a fracture in Italy when we went into a ditch via my car. Imagine how mad she was to speak to me again! Bless her heart. Anyway that proves there are good people in the world. . . HST once described you as having a paranoid flash within your character. What did he mean? Do you see an essential beauty or aesthetic in the grotesque? How do you get those ideas when you transform people in such frightening animal forms? Does the new political scene make you shudder more than it ever did?
