Reading to Remember Poet William Stafford
Local college professors, publishers and fans will remember poet William Stafford at a public gathering Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Los Padres National Forest. The second annual Remembering William Stafford: A Community Reading will be held at the First Crossing Day Use Area on Paradise Road off of Highway 154 and across the road from the Los Prietos Boys Camp at 3900 Paradise Road. The event is free and no day use fees are necessary to attend the reading. “Last year’s gathering included a wonderful cross-section of the community,” says Paul Willis, Westmont professor of English, who is hosting the event. “We are very pleased that the forest service has installed a small permanent exhibit on Stafford at their Los Prietos Visitor Center.” David Starkey, director of the creative writing program at Santa Barbara City College, and Glenna Luschei, publisher of Solo Press are featured readers. Half the program is set aside for the public to read their favorite Stafford poems. The event is sponsored by The Friends of William Stafford, Westmont College and Santa Barbara City College.

Background Bill Stafford is a historian of ideas, especially of social and political ideas, and his 'home base' is in British thought of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. But he has ranged widely, and is for example interested in literature as a source for historians, and has written about Mozart. He teaches on the foundation level 'Keywords' syllabus. At advanced level he teaches a 'Plato to Nato' module on classics of political philosophy, and also a syllabus on 'Women in Western Thought' from Mary Astell in the seventeenth century to Simone de Beauvoir in the twentieth. Since obtaining his first degree and doctorate in Oxford, he has taught at Huddersfield (since 1972); he led the creation and development of the pioneering and successful part-time MA in History here. He is now Professor and was for several years Director of Research in the School of Music and Humanities.

45. In A Dark Time … The Eye Begins To See » William Stafford
As I researched Robert Bly last week, I discovered Bly was often linked with Oregon poet william stafford. Thinking back to the few stafford poems I could

Traveling Through the Dark, Looking for Light
Traveling Through the Dark particular poem I really liked.
What I found bothersome in these poems is the same thing I often disliked in Bly’s poems, the “deep imagery" is often difficult or nearly impossible to penetrate. Now “difficult” isn’t necessarily bad. If poetry wasn’t difficult, there would be no need for English teachers – a bad thing, I assure you. Life itself is “difficult” and is particularly “difficult to understand,” otherwise there would be no need for poets, another bad thing. Still, if the connections the poet is trying to make in his poems are too obscure, if the reader is unable to make the connections the poet wants him to make, the poem fails, unless the reader is willing to drag his college professor along behind him like some ball-and-chain his whole life. Few are willing to make such a sacrifice, certainly not I.

Our research group develops and applies computational techniques for modeling and understanding biological processes at the molecular level. Our research emphasizes the application of statistical and machine learning techniques, such as hidden Markov models and support vector machines. We apply these techniques to various types of biological data, including DNA and protein sequence data, as well as gene expression data from microarray experiments. We are currently developing methods for the identification of gene transcripts and regulatory motifs in DNA, detection of remote protein homologies, and gene and tissue classification from microarray and other types of data.

  • William Stafford Noble , Associate Professor, Genome Sciences
  • Bob Thurman , Associate Research Scientist, Division of Medical Genetics Much of my work has been part of the ENCODE project, which is a large-scale international program to catalog all of the functional elements of the human genome. My work has focused on computational approaches to understanding two things. First, chromatin structure. This is the structure in which DNA is packaged in order to fit in the cell. I work closely with the Stam lab in the analysis of their DNaseI data, which measures the "openness" or accessiblity of chromatin at each point in the genome. Another, related field of interest is epigenetics, or the modifications to DNA that do not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence. Some epigenetic phenomena, such as histone modifications, have been shown to be related to chromatin structure. Much of my work in both of these areas involves mathematical and signal processing techniques such as wavelets and Fourier analysis.

STAFFORD, Sir Edward William, G.C.M.G.
Landowner and statesman. Edward William Stafford was born in Edinburgh on 23 April 1819. His father, Berkeley Buckingham Stafford, belonged to a well-to-do family of County Louth, Ireland; his mother, Anne n©e Early in 1859 Stafford left for England to discuss plans for a Panama mail service and for military settlements in New Zealand. These came to nothing, but he established a London agency under John Morrison. He also averted possible disallowance of the Waste Lands Act passed in 1858. Stafford's wife had died in 1857. Whilst in England he married, on 5 December 1859, Mary, daughter of the Hon. T. H. Bartley, Speaker of the Legislative Council. Stafford returned to New Zealand in January 1860. In his absence the Governor, on the prompting of Donald McLean, had accepted the offer of Teira to sell a block of land at Waitara. He assumed responsibility for the policy, however, by taking part in the Executive Council decision of 25 January 1860 to proceed with the survey of the land, which led directly to the outbreak of the Taranaki War. Later he seems to have doubted whether the policy was wise, but he stoutly and successfully defended it against attack in the Assembly of 1860. After a general election, however, when the war had died down, the new House on 5 July 1861 carried by one vote a motion of no confidence moved by Fox, and Stafford resigned. He had not been personally popular, but his five-year tenure of office so soon after the introduction of responsible government had built up the strength of the Central Government, tended to crystallise parties, and thus given some stability to colonial politics.
