born January 17, 1914, Hutchinson, Kansas, U.S. died August 28, 1993, Lake Oswego, Oregon Down in My Heart A prolific and accessible poet, Stafford often wrote about the American West while exploring universal themes. His first poetry collection, West of Your City , was published in 1960. In Traveling Through the Dark (1962), a volume of restrained and introspective verse, Stafford revealed his fascination with self-searching and discovery; it received the National Book Award for Poetry in 1962. Later collections include Allegiances A Glass Face in the Rain (1982), and An Oregon Message (1987). Stafford also wrote criticism and edited several anthologies. In Writing the Australian Crawl (1978) he described his writing process. William Stafford Link to this article and share the full text with the readers of your Web site or blog-post.

A Conversation With William Stafford William Stafford was born in 1914 and grew up in a series of small Kansas towns. As a conscientious objector he served in Civilian Public Service camps in Arkansas and California during World War II. He earned his degrees at the Universities of Kansas and Iowa, and taught for many years at Lewis and Clark College in Oregon. Over the thirty-some years that Stafford has been publishing poetry he has become one of the most widely recognized and admired of contemporary American poets. His many collections of poems include the National Book Award winning Traveling Through the Dark (Harper, 1962), Stories That Could Be True (Harper, 1978) and most recently An Oregon Message (Harper, 1987) and A Scripture of Leaves (Brethren Press, 1989). He has also published three books of prose, two of them in the Poets on Poetry Series from the University of Michigan Press. Now retired from full-time teaching, he continues to publish and speak widely. Stafford has insisted throughout his career that writing is what matters, not writers. Yet as David Young points out in Field recently, Stafford "has a larger public and a better claim to being our pre-eminent living poet than anyone else I can think of." His influence has indeed gone far beyond whatever ivory tower or secluded glade poets are consigned to by those who claim to be "practical." His essays on a way of writing in which the process is significant even when the product is expendable have influenced a whole generation of writing teachers, and through them many more students. His essays and interviews on nonviolent teaching are both a resource and a challenge to those like me who hope to go beyond teaching about peace to teaching peaceably. And perhaps most importantly, his poems continue to appear at an amazing rate, always with the compassion, clarity and humility we have come to expect from him.

Despite his late start, he was a frequent contributor to magazines and anthologies and eventually published fifty-seven volumes of poetry. James Dickey called Stafford one of those poets "who pour out rivers of ink, all on good poems." His poetry collection

More Than Has Ever Been Found In response to the many people looking for some of Stafford's work online, here are 17 of his poems, some well-known and others that have not received as much attention. Reading these I'm reminded how much faith Stafford had in his own process of writing, in his own life. That kind of trust stands in stark contrast to much of the fretful and jittery teaching and criticism that often goes unchallenged these days. For new and experienced poets alike there may be no stronger tonic for the many ills that assail the writing life than Stafford's poems and his many essays about writing. An Encounter with William Stafford
This article was written by David Feela Postcard from William Stafford A meeting one author will never forget. I had known William Stafford for over twenty years before I met himknown him, that is, in the way any reader comes to know an author, holding his ideas in my hands, believing his physical self somehow incapable of standing beside his work. We were, strangely enough, introduced by a series of coincidences, but it seemed afterward as if some great design in the universe continually suggested that I meet the man behind the writing. I never vigorously sought Stafford's counsel through his books, but it didn't matter: his writing continued to materialize in an astounding number of publications. As a student of poetry in the 1970's it was impossible to pick up an anthology or little magazine without encountering one of Stafford's poems. As he told me much later, the best advice he followed was to send more material into the mail than anyone could possibly imagine. He dryly suggested that he'd flooded the market. While completing classes at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, my wife introduced me to a couple she'd met and fate seemed to take over again. One of them happened to be the son of a man who'd worked with William Stafford in the Forest Service camps during World War II. Generosity led to opportunity. I received word that William Stafford would be reading and conducting a workshop in Cedar City, Utah, so my wife and I rode our motorcycle a long and tedious day for the chance to meet him face to face.

    Celebrate William Stafford's 94th today
Garrison Keillor gave tribute today on The Writer's Almanac to Stafford on his 94th birthday: It's the birthday of poet William Edgar Stafford, (books by this author) born in Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1914, the same year as American poets Weldon Kees and Randall Jarrell and John Berryman...Stafford usually wrote in the early morning. He sat down with a pen and paper, took a look out the window, and waited for something to occur to him. He wrote about simple things like farms and dead deer and winter. He wrote about the West and his parents and cottonwood trees. He wrote, "In the winter, in the dark hours, when others / were asleep, I found these words and put them / together by their appetites and respect for / each other. In stillness, they jostled. They traded / meanings while pretending to have only one." After a brief biographical note, Keillor read Stafford's poem "What's In My Journal."
