First published in England in 1782, Crevecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer was one of the first works to describe the character of the average American at the close of the Revolutionary War. His famous question, "What, then, is the American, this new man?," summarized the European's interest in and questioning of the new country of America at a time when centuries of tradition had just been overturned and post-colonial Americans were attempting to describe themselves in a new way. Through the character of James, the letters celebrate the land of America, its space and fertility, and the character of Americans themselves, their work ethic and spirit of personal determination. The Letters also look at the darker side of American life, particularly the issue of slavery. The discussions of American identity, participation in war (or not), and the perception of immigrants and their ethnicity make this book as relevant to our understanding of ourselves today as it was in 1782.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Letters is a very accessible text; the greatest difficulty in teaching it is establishing the cultural contextthe political rhetoric of the Revolutionwhich makes structural sense of the whole. Generally, students read the text as the simple story of a farmer and as "truth" rather than as fiction. The teaching challenge is to get students to see how political ideas structure the text. One way into the text is to have the students read Letter II and count the references, both direct and indirect, to the way society should be organized. In the opening section of the letter, James compares his situation to the state of other farmers in other nations. Later in Letter II, note how the supposedly neutral descriptions of animals are used to talk about the conduct of humans in society. Students are generally intrigued by the idea that members of the colonies were actually against the Revolution.

J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur:
What Is an American?
What attachment can a poor European emigrant have for a country where he had nothing? The knowledge of the language, the love of a few kindred as poor as himself, were the only cords that tied him: his country is now that which gives him land, bread, protection, and consequences: Ubi panis ibi patria, ["where there is bread, there is my country"] is the motto of all emigrants. What then is the American, this new man? He is either an European, or the descendant of an European, hence that strange mixture of blood, which you will find in no other country. I could point out to you a family whose grandfather was an Englishman, whose wife was Dutch, whose son married a French woman, and whose present four sons have now four wives of different nations. He is an American, who, leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys, and the new rank he holds. He becomes an American by being received in the broad lap of our great Alma Mater.

59. First Summit Of Early Anglo- And Ibero Americanists
This English Atlantic text was penned by J. hector st. john de Crèvecoeur (born. MichelGuillame-Jean de Crèvecoeur), a profoundly Anglophilic Frenchman
http://www.mith2.umd.edu/summit/Proceedings/Kutchen.htm
First Summit of Early Anglo- and Ibero Americanists Tucson Arizona , May 18 Larry Kutchen Panel:  “ New World Landscapes, American Incarnations” Crèvecoeur:  Letters From an American Farmer A central irony of the Letters from an American Farmer —published in London, 1782—is that although for two generations after the American Revolution it was one of the books that most influenced Europeans’ perceptions of the United States, it nevertheless is a text that at once celebrates the regenerative capacity of the British Empire and mourns the violent creation of the new nation.  The opening Advertisement to the London edition characterizes Farmer James, the persona and central character of the Letters, as an “eye witness of the transactions which have deformed the face of America,” “one of those who dreaded and has severely felt the desolating consequences of a rupture between the parent state and her colonies” (Crèvecoeur, 35) In the book’s closing sentences, the rustic writer, writing back to imperial center from a colony in the throes of revolution, warns his aristocratic London correspondent that “he cannot avoid mourning with me over that load of physical and moral evil with which we are all oppressed. My own share of it I often overlook when I minutely contemplate all that had befallen our native country” (227).  Note here that the question of just where the “native country” is—whether in the American colonies or in England —is left suspended.  Nevertheless, the rupture between “parent state and her colonies” is temporarily mended in closing by the shared melancholy of two Britons; the felt consequence of revolution is less the birth of a nation than a collapse into imperial ruin.
