In 1755 he emigrated to New France in North America. There, he served in the French and Indian War as a surveyor in the French Colonial Militia, rising to the rank of lieutenant. Following the British defeat of the French Army in he moved to New York State , then the Province of New York, where he took out citizenship, adopted the English-American name of John Hector St. John, and in married an American woman, Mehitable Tippet. He bought a sizable farm in Orange County, N.Y., where he prospered as a farmer and took up writing about life in the American colonies and the emergence of an American society. In 1780, during the American Revolution, the faltering health of his father forced him to travel to Europe. Accompanied by his son, he crossed British-American lines to enter British-occupied New York City, where he was briefly imprisoned as an American spy. Eventually, he was able to leave for Britain.

HECTOR ST. JOHN DE CREVECOEUR LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN FARMER INTRODUCTION AND NOTES BY WARREN BARTON BLAKE INTRODUCTION Hazlitt wrote that of the three notable writers whom the eighteenth century had produced, in the North American colonies, one was "the author (whoever he was) of the American Farmer's Letters." Crevecoeur was that unknown author; and Hazlitt said further of him that he rendered, in his own vividly characteristic manner, "not only the objects, but the feelings, of a new country." Great is the

Michel-Guillaume Jean de Crevecoeur
A Frenchman who spent more than half of his life in the New World, Crevecour contributed two important concepts to the American consciousness. The first is the idea of the "American Adam," that there is something different, unique, special, or new about these people called "Americans." The second idea is that of the "melting pot," that people's "American-ness" transcends their ethnic, cultural, or religious backgrounds. Whether or not one agrees with either of these concepts, it is hard to deny that both of these ideas have had a strong impact on American culture.

Letters from an American Farmer (1782). Other letters, found in 1922, were published as Sketches of Eighteenth Century America (1925). The two books give outstanding descriptions of American rural life of the period. He wrote, over the signature Agricola, agricultural articles for American newspapers. He introduced the culture of European crops, notably alfalfa, into America and of the American potato into Normandy. As French consul in New York City (from 1783) he sought to improve commercial relations between France and the United States. He lived in France from 1790. See biography by T. L. Philbrick (1970).

    AN AMERICAN BY DEFINITION:
THE MANY LIVES OF HECTOR ST. JOHN DE CREVECOEUR
by Doug A. Mishler Letters From an American Farmer in 1780 was arguably the most insightful examination of the fledgling American people. His later work Voyage in Pennsylvania and New York , only further helped define what it meant to be an American. While St. John presented intriguing social and cultural observations about how Americans ceased being Europeans and became something different and unique, it can be argued he was never able to define who he was. However, while he led many lives, he was an American at his core. His second life as a surveyor and map maker with the French army lasted four bloody years during the French and Indian War until 1759, when he was forced to resign by his fellow officers. His third life began when he adopted the name James Hector St. John and traveled as a surveyor and Indian trader from Maine to Ohio to Virginia. He was even adopted by the Oneidas as Cahio-Hara. His fourth incarnation began in 1769 when he married Mehitable Tippet and became a gentleman farmer in Orange County, New York, on 120 acres he named Pine Hill. He became part of the elite Tory society and wrote his

Biography Born Michel-Guillaume Jean de Crèvecoeur in Caen, Normandy, Crèvecoeur left home at nineteen to move first to England, then to Canada, where he became a government surveyor and cartographer. He traveled to New York in 1759 and began the name changes that would lead, finally, to J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur. As a surveyor and trader with American Indians, he traveled throughout the colonies for the next ten years and, after marrying, settled down in Orange County, New York, to become a farmer. Crèvecoeur began to compose essays about farm life in America, which were published as Letters from an American Farmer (1782). Inspired by the American Revolution, Crèvecoeur attempted to return to France to reclaim family lands but was arrested and imprisoned as a spy when he tried to leave from New York. Upon his release, he sailed to France and returned to New York as French consul only to find his farm destroyed by Indians, his wife killed, and his children living with strangers. Although Crèvecoeur enjoyed a successful diplomatic career in America, being made an honorary citizen of many towns, he returned permanently to France in 1785.
