Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, New York T he botanical St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is native to Europe, West Asia, and North Africa, and has been naturalized to North and South America and Australia. The Greeks and the Romans documented its medicinal use in the treatment of nerve-related disorders. In Germany, St. John's wort is the most commonly prescribed antidepressant. In 1984, the German Commission E designated St. John's wort as an approved herb, and its safety and effectiveness are reevaluated periodically. St. John's wort has been used to treat a variety of conditions. It also has been suggested to alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder ; however, these applications have been studied less extensively. Additional studies of St. John's wort, funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, are underway. This review focuses solely on the use of St. John's wort for the treatment of depression.

St. John on Flash
St. John on Flash: Alex St. John was given a surprising quote in this Reuters article: "Among Mr. St. John's other gripes are that Vista won't ship with Flash, a piece of software from Microsoft rival Adobe that is used to create many online and casual games." I didn't see this in the Gama Sutra op/ed Alex had earlier this month on the difficulty of Vista for indy game developers. In quick web searches I see that he responds on the blog of Adobe staffer Andrew Shebanow ... could this be the unattributed source citation for the unbylined Reuters article? If so, then I don't much care that Vista is all-MS code this time, instead of having Macromedia Flash Player as the only non-MS code included with Windows XP... the adoption rate of Adobe Flash Player is far in excess of OS or browser adoption rates, and most of the popular websites on the web entice their audiences to update their Player. I'd agree with Andrew's key point that using Flash for casual gaming under Vista will be far simpler than trying to persuade audiences to include native-OS code for a game. (The "surprising" part was that Wild Tangent was usually considered a competitor to Macromedia, so a Flash endorsement now is a nice surprise... it's like how Karl Jacob of Dimension X pioneered Microsoft's Chrome Effects (a prior vector plugin for browsers), and then ended up using Flash for Wallop... the little debates may come and go, but practicality wins out in the end.)

    St. John D. Seymour
    True Irish Ghost Stories
    (1914; Parragon, 1998)
In 1913, St. John D. Seymour realized that Ireland had folklore and fairy-tale collections a-plenty, but the country's rich tradition of ghost stories was for the most part untapped. So, working with Harry L. Neligan, he set out to gather a few. The resulting book, first published in 1914 and revised with additional stories in 1926, is back on the market for a new generation of curiosity seekers. True Irish Ghost Stories doesn't try to be horrific or to shock its readers with gruesome or frightening tales. The editors published a request for anecdotes in the newspapers of the day and waited for the stories to roll in. They got a lot of responses, but there isn't much detail or depth, and there's very little effort made to explain the background or cause of the events described. The resulting book is conversational in tone. These aren't the sort of ghost stories to be told around a campfire; they read more like some polite parlor discourse over a pot of tea or a bit of gossip down at the pub. There's a hint of embarrassment, too, as if a ghostly experience isn't something you'd want linked to the family name in fact, most of the names and locations are not revealed. I like ghost stories that cause a bit of a shiver.
