Mickey Spillane; Tough-Guy Writer Of Mike Hammer Detective Mysteries
By Adam Bernstein Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, July 18, 2006; Page B06 Mickey Spillane, 88, who died July 17 in Murrells Inlet, S.C., was one of the world's most popular mystery writers. His specialty was tight-fisted, sadistic revenge stories, often featuring his alcoholic gumshoe Mike Hammer and a cast of evildoers who launder money or spout the Communist Party line. His writing style was characterized by short words, lightning transitions, gruff sex and violent endings. It was once tallied that he offed 58 people in six novels. Writer Mickey Spillane stands on the porch of his home in Murrell's Inlet, S.C. May 16, 2001. Spillane, the macho mystery writer who wowed millions of readers with the shoot-'em-up sex and violence of gumshoe Mike Hammer, died Monday July 17, 2006. He was 88. Mickey Spillane
Interviewed by Michael Carlson The best part about interviewing Mickey Spillane is the fun he appears to be having...I likened it to a cowboy trying to saddle a wily old mustang that refuses to be broken and knows all the cowboy tricks. Mickey holds little back, and he is so animated with stories you soon realise that one of the keys to his success is his genuine interest in people. He's the kind of person who would fit in anywhere. There are a number of stories he asked be off the record, and a couple of them then popped up a few nights later during his Guardian Lecture, but I've kept to his request. I've also had to leave out Mickey's instructions on how to kiss a duck's tail without ruffling the feathers, mostly because there's no way I can describe it in prose. Mickey's persona is that of a tough guy who doesn't really care about his art, but as this interview makes clear, good story telling grows from understanding people, and Spillane has a PhD in people... I'll brown nose you right from the start...

Frank Morrison Spillane was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1918, the only child of a Scottish mother and an Irish father, who was a bartender. He grew up in a tough area at a tough time, but found that he could usually talk himself out of trouble. He began writing at high school, but with no great success, and briefly attended Fort Hays State College, Kansas. In the winter he did odd jobs, including a spell as a trampoline artist for the Barnum and Bailey circus, while in the summer he was a lifeguard. NI_MPU('middle'); Immediately after Pearl Harbor he joined the US Army Air Corps in which he became a flying instructor, ending the war with the rank of captain. He and the Gill brothers then set up what was, in effect, a comic book factory. It prospered but left Spillane unsatisfied. Needing money to buy a house in the country for his wife, Mary Ann, whom he had married in 1945, he decided to write a novel. It took him just 19 days to complete the first Mike Hammer book, I, the Jury

Interviewer: That reminds me of a quote from Race Williams: "My conscience is clear; I never shot anybody that didn't need to die," Mr. Spillane: Jeez, you bring up Race Williams. I had a bunch of his stuff I saved for years. Interviewer: He sounded in a way like Mike Hammer. The words weren't the same but the ideology was. Mr. Spillane: I always liked the Race Williams stories so much. I used to say that's the kind of story that l am going to write. I'll tell you an awful story about this. • UK Wednesday, 19 July 2006 Frank Morrison Spillane (Mickey Spillane), writer: born New York 9 March 1918; married 1945 Mary Ann Pearce (two sons, two daughters; marriage dissolved 1962), 1965 Sherri Malinou (marriage dissolved), 1983 Jane Rodgers Johnson; died Murrells Inlet, South Carolina 17 July 2006. Mickey Spillane was 1950s pulp fiction. His vicious, violent detective Mike Hammer was the dark side of those detectives-with-honour Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade. In 13 paperback novels, Spillane revolutionised the crime market, making a fortune in the process and leaving as a legacy one of the all-time great movie adaptations - Robert Aldrich's delirious, apocalyptic Kiss Me Deadly (1955). Derided by Raymond Chandler and Ernest Hemingway, Spillane stuck to the commercial line: "I have no fans. You know what I got? Customers. And customers are your friends." He was born Frank Morrison Spillane in 1918 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of a Catholic bartender, John J. Spillane, and his Protestant wife, Catherine. Michael was his saint's name, and his family called him "Mickey". He grew up in neighbouring Elizabeth, New Jersey, graduating in 1935 from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn. At Fort Hayes State College, Kansas, he excelled in swimming before dropping out and moving back to New York. He worked as a lifeguard in Queens but, a keen reader - Alexandre Dumas had been one of his favourite authors when growing up - he also began writing for magazines, then moved on to comics.

Slippin’ Heaven a Mickey
First it was Dorothy Uhnak , suddenly gone at age 76. Now it’s Mickey Spillane , who was 88 years old at the time he died, on Monday, in his hometown of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. The passing of two such heavyweights in the crime-fiction field during a single week’s span is somewhat alarming. Though, of course, many people thought Spillane was already gone, many years ago. This was in fact a tribute to his longevity and impact: How, readers figured, could someone who’d been at the crime-writing game for so long (his first private eye Mike Hammer novel, I, the Jury , was published way back in 1947) still be batting out stories on his old Smith-Corona typewriter?
But others saw “The Mick,” as he was known, as a permanent fixture in the pantheon of crime novelists. “I guess I never thought he would die. Really,” writes veteran novelist Ed Gorman ( Breaking Up Is Hard to Do Save the Last Dance for Me ) at the Mystery*File site. “I started reading him when I was in sixth grade and I’m now in my early sixties and he was always there. Until today.”

US crime novelist. He began by writing for pulp magazines and became an internationally best-selling author with books featuring private investigator Mike Hammer, a violent vigilante who wages an amoral war on crime. His most popular novels include I, the Jury (1947) and Kiss Me Deadly (1953) (both made into films in the noir style in the 1950s). Later novels include The Ship That Never Was (1982) and Something's Down There By the time of his 13th Mike Hammer novel, Black Alley (1996), Spillane's books had achieved sales in excess of 180 million. His other works include Day of the Guns The Long Wait (1951), and The Delta Factor (1968). He also wrote

He's been slated for his use of sex and violence, condemned for his right-wing politics... What is it about this guy that critics so loath and Joe Q. Citizen loves? You, the jury, preside over the case of the most vilified author ever to sell 200 million copies of his books around God's green earth. With Judge Steve Holland presiding, would the clerk of the court please read out the charges... MICKEY SPILLANE Hard-boiled's most extreme stylist or cynical exploiter of Machismo?
Frank Spillane has the unusual distinction of being named twice. His father, bartender John Joseph Spillane was a Catholic and his son was baptised with the middle name Michael; at the Protestant church of his mother Catherine Anne he was christened Frank Morrison Spillane. To his father he was always 'Mickey,' and that's the name that stuck and the way his fans have always known him. FOOTNOTE 1. Growing up in Elizabeth, New Jersey, young Mickey showed a flair for sports and telling stories; the latter earned him a little extra money when he began selling yarns soon after graduating high school while the former got him a place at Kansas State Teachers College, albeit briefly. He was soon back in New York, and in 1939 found work with Funnies, Inc., a comic strip production-line run by Lloyd V. Jacquet who supplied strips, written and drawn in-house, to the majority of the leading comic publishers of the time; Spillane found himself working on characters such as The Human Torch, Sub-Mariner, Captain America, Blue Bolt, Batman, Captain Marvel and Plastic Man for the next few years before seeing war service with the Air Force, training pilots at Greenwood, Mississippi. He returned to New York in 1946 where he supported himself and new bride Mary Ann Spillane by writing back-up strips like "Jackie the Slick Chick" and "Smarty Pants".

"Something's Down There"
(reviewed by Cindy Lynn Speer FEB 22, 2004) "Very slowly, the Clamdip circled the Soucan until they were looking at the bottom. Something inside the sinking boat made a loud, screeching noise, ripping at the wood and metal, then the hulk turned completely over and exposed her barnacled underside....there, as sure as the sun sets, was a big hunk taken out of the bottom of the boat, and where it looked like it was regurgitating steel springs and cotton out of its maw, Peter had jammed the mattress. But it wasn't the mess of garbage that was sliding into the water that made the impact on Hooker. It was those beautifully regular six-inch saw tooth marks on the top break of the wood that were clearly visible in those few instants that made Hooker feel as though a cold wind had just blown down on him from some northern ice field."
