Overview of the Records
Repository: Creator: Oyez Press. Title: Oyez Press Records. Dates: Extent: 24 linear feet. Record Series: Language English. Abstract: Founded in 1964 by Robert Hawley and Stevens van Strum, the Oyez Press initially produced a series of poetry broadsides by such notable figures as Robert Duncan, Robert Creeley, William Everson, Gary Snyder, and Charles Olson. Although van Strum left in 1968, Hawley continued on with the press in his spare time, eventually publishing over 80 books in addition to numerous keepsakes and broadsides, featuring authors such as David Meltzer, Josephine Miles, Lew Welch, Philip Lamantia, and many others. Oyez publications were highly regarded for the simplicity and elegance of their design; many were produced in collaboration with printer Graham Mackintosh.
History
Robert Hawley was born in 1929 in Stockbridge, Wisconsin. He was a student at Black Mountain College in 1956, shortly before that institution closed its doors. Although he already had an M.A. in English and was an aspiring poet, Charles Olson discouraged him in this regard, but suggested to Hawley that he give publishing a try. By 1957, Hawley was in Berkeley, California, working as a bookseller specializing in Western Americana at the Holmes Book Company.

Dear Sirs I work for and am trying to aid BSAPP, a charity working with and trying to treat street dogs in Sofia, Bulgaria.
We have one young dog, Sarka, in our rescue centre who has a spinal injury, caused by unknown means prior to being rescued and resulting in total paralysis of her back legs. She is a lovely dog, full of life and is managing to get around by using her front legs to pull herself around on her bottom. Not ideal.
Could you let me have a picture of the wheelchair/trolley, so that we can try to make one of our own, based on the general concept please?

  • Disturbed by the mid-century capitalistic imperative that Americans make a living, and unsatisfied with the Soviet Union's alternative of valorizing communal labor, Hannah Arendt seeks in the human condition some other idea of freedom. She is drawn to the ancient Greek polis model of a public space accessible exclusively to free male citizens liberated from the bonds of household labor and the work of crafting material goods. There men freely engaged in activities possessing , or a liberating virtuosity and improvisational subtlety not unlike that of a musical performance. For Arendt, politics, speech, and music "do not pursue an end (are ateleis ) and leave no work behind (no par' autas erga ), but exhaust their full meaning in the performance itself." The freest and most political action in this schema is that which expends itself in the moment and place of its enactment, where "the performance is the work" (206). Arendt especially struggles to pinpoint where poetry lies in her tripartite schemata of work, labor, and action. She contends that "a poem is less a thing than any other work of art; yet even a poem, no matter how long it existed as a living spoken word in the recollection of the bard and those who listened to him, will eventually be 'made,' that is, written down and transformed into a tangible thing among things" (170). An odd predicament, indeed. Poetry does not belong to this world, nor can it found a

The Xiaolin side 1.Omi- Omi is the Xiaolin dragon of water. An eccentric young monk, he tries to act "cool" but often gets things (especially slang words and sayings) wrong. Omi is short, bald and gets nine dots on his head when he uncovers his full potential. His moves are Tsunami/Tornado Strike Water/Ice and Wudai Neptune Water/Ice. His trademark Wu is the Orb of Tornami. His Wudai Weapon is the Shimo Staff. 2.Raimundo Pedrosa- The Xiaolin dragon of wind, this cocky Brazillian circus star uses his street smarts to get out of tight situations. Despite the fact that Raimundo is very laid back he is still a very skilled fighter. He once left the Xiaolin warriors to join the side of evil but soon returned to the side of good. Because of his bravery and great leadership skills in Time after time (2), Raimundo was picked to be a Shoku warrior (Xiaolin leader). Raimundo's moves are Typhoon Boom Wind and Wudai Star Wind. His trademark Wu is the Sword of the Storms. His Wudai Weapon is the Blade of the Nebula.

    The Desert Modernism

Some years ago, a retrospective of Impressionism toured that organized paintings not by painter, but by the salon. That is, each painting was ordered by the timing of its first public appearance. While this structure had the limitation of making it seem that Paris was the omphalos of painting, this was nonetheless an interesting way to look at influences and trends in at least an approximation of historical context. You could see an idea about the use of light or color show up in one or two paintings in the salon of one year, then sweep through the next salon, showing up in everybody's canvases, only to ebb again in the show after that. As a viewer, the experience was illuminating and it made me want someday to organize an anthology of 20th century poetry along similar lines. I don't have anything so grand in mind today. But what I would like to do is to construct a possible view of the American poetic tradition that can most accurately be termed our avant-garde as it existed during a very brief period—roughly between 1950 and 1954. I plan to plot my discussion around a specific text, "The Desert Music," the title poem of William Carlos Williams' 1954 Random House collection. The poem itself describes an event that took place in mid-November of 1950 when Williams, his wife Floss, Robert McAlmon, McAlmon's brothers and their wives took a stroll over the border from El Paso, Texas to Juárez, Mexico. In June of 1951, seven months later, Williams would read the poem publicly for the first time at Harvard where he was given an honorary membership in the Phi Beta Kappa society.

Checkout The House That Jack Built collects for the first time the four historic talks given by controversial poet Jack Spicer just before his early death in 1965. These lively and provocative lectures function as a gloss to Spicer's own poetry, a general discourse on poetics, and a cautionary handbook for young poets. This long-awaited document of Spicer's unorthodox poetic vision, what Robin Blaser has called "the practice of outside," is an authoritative edition of an underground classic. Peter Gizzi's afterword elucidates some of the fundamental issues of Spicer's poetry and lectures, including the concept of poetic dictation, which Spicer renovates with vocabularies of popular culture: radio, Martians, and baseball; his use of the California landscape as a backdrop for his poems; and his visual imagination in relation to the aesthetics of west-coast funk assemblage. This book delivers a firsthand account of the contrary and turbulent poetics that define Spicer's ongoing contribution to an international avant-garde. "Spicer is an intriguing and ultimately crucial figure in the history of postwar American poetry. ...His lectures on poetry are some of the best from the postwar era. Peter Gizzi's handling does them full justice: he makes the liveliness of the interchange clear and presents Spicer's knottedness helpfully without explaining the difficulties away."—Bob Perelman
