Second Life writer presence
March 20th 2007 at 2:54 am I have some rough ideas after exploring and getting a feel for the place over the last month or so. I imagine there are others better oriented than I am. If IBM and other companies have Second Life stores, it would be fun to do some similar stuff, hosting readings in a certain place (so people would expect and come to look for events in a pavilion or something) and what not. Home SciFi Magazine Home REVIEW: 2005 Nebula Award Short Fiction Nominees As mentioned previously , I undertook a project to read the short fiction nominees for the 2005 Nebula Award since all of the nominees were available online this year - a fortunate effect of the Internet Age. Overall, the experience was fun, but I must say I was less than impressed with some of the stories. While most of them were good or better, a few of the stories just simply failed to entertain. Then again, there were a fair number of fantasy stories here and I make no bones about my hit-and-miss track record with fantasy. Ultimately, I just expected more from stories that were nominated for an award. In a nutshell, here are my impressions of the stories in each category, sorted from most to least enjoyable. Obviously, the winning picks are the tops ones listed in each category. Novellas

    Tangent Reviews
    Analog, July, 1996
    from Tangent #16, Summer 1996
Reviewers always worry that they won't find anything interesting to say about a magazine. In this regard, the July "Special Double Issue" is a reviewer's dream, sparking ideas and notions, even critical epiphanies. Everything that makes Analog Analog is in surfeit here, as if editor Stan Schmidt had set out, flow chart and parts list in hand, to create the quintessential Analog issue. To begin with, the issue immediately shows a finely tuned mathematical balance. There are four novelettes and four short stories, and they break down into four fun stories and four serious ones. More patterns will become apparent later, but first to the fun stuff. Don D'Ammassa's short "Thoracic Park," is a parody of exactly what you think it is. In the far future, insects have managed to reproduce the long dead humans and one particular entrepreneur has a kind of theme park in mind... The story lacks the convulsive energy that propels the best parodies, but with so broad a target, dozens of shafts find their mark. From the title to the last page, Bud Sparhawk's novelette "Sam Boone's Appeal to Common Scents," has energy to spare. I was irresistibly reminded of Keith Laumer's Retief yarns of beloved youth, except that Sam Boone is an interplanetary arbitrator rather than a diplomat. The requisite sets of comic aliens are well represented, perhaps to a fault. And when you set up your own impasse between imaginary aliens of your own creation, there's little suspense that your own negotiator will find a solution. And like all the novelettes in this issue, it is much too long, as I discovered around page ten when I metaphorically stopped to check my watch. Okay, so it's not Retief. Turn off your brain and have fun with it, anyhow.

Programs and Tours at Info Island
On Saturday night author Lopayza Moonlight talked about her work, creating fiction into virtual reality in Second Life and took the 15 attendees on a tour of her creation in Apoda.
On Wednesday night, Lorelei Junot and Eiseldora Reisman talked to SLED - the Second Life Graduate Education group, and gave them a tour of Info Island including the Main Library and the ICT library. Approximately 20 attended. Some are gearing up for fall classes and will use the library to supplement their courses.

What A Week at Info Island!
The week started well with Maxito Ricardo, Caroline Keats, and I giving a tour of the island and introduction to medical resources on the Internet to Sojourner's stroke victim group.
Tech Soup had a wonderful mixed reality event to show their new directory of non-profits in Second Life, and various speakers, including a library representative talked on their organizations to a crowd of nearly 60. The event was wonderful. Glitter and her group did a tremendous job and it was exciting to have so many people on the island.

January 12th, 2008 Oh. My. Goodness. When out shopping today, I decided to act on impulse and visit JB to finally buy The Mummy , because I only have this taped off TV. I expected that I would be able to get it as a double with The Mummy Returns , which I was fine with. Turned out that I could only get it as a trilogy, with The Scorpion King The Mummy by itself. Plus, it was 20% off all DVDs, which was even better. For that reason, we had a look around the store for anything else that caught our eye, which is how we ended up with the Blade trilogy as well. Then, on the way out, my darling saw the stall where they have the multiple-movies-in-one-case. There was one with The Mummy The Mummy Returns Scorpion King Van Helsing The Hulk Doom Pitch Black (love it; love Claudia Black!), Chonicles of Riddick (same; plus Judi Dench in such a cool, out-there role)
