Kristin Evans knows exactly where she is headed: a career in teaching communications at the college level. “I always knew that I wanted to get my PhD,” she says. “I decided to get my master’s degree first, because I wasn’t sure what area of communications I wanted to focus on.” She sought a graduate program that would allow her to explore her academic interests in a close-knit academic environment. Bowie State University was a natural choice, she says, offering a respected communications program, convenience, and a supportive atmosphere. Learn More

Ak©: The Years of Childhood
Wole Soyinka
Arrow Books 1983 A book review by Danny Yee Ak© is ebullient, full of the excitement of new discoveries and opportunities, a celebration of the wonder of childhood. The narrative is episodic, following the patchiness of childhood memories. As well as domestic and school dramas, Soyinka's adventures include following a marching band to the next town when he was only five, taking part in a snake hunt, and being ritually scarified by his grandfather. There are a fascinating array of characters, though seen through the limited perception of the child: his father Essay, the primary school principal, his mother Wild Christian, the traditional warrior Paa Adatan, patrolling the town against the threat of Hitler, the unwanted but entertaining guest "Mayself", the idiosyncratic headmaster and his activist wife, and many others. Some of the interest comes from the exotic setting, the Yoruba idioms and songs and Egba food, customs and ritual, and from the intertwining of the traditional and the modern. And the World War rages in the distance, while Soyinka's family becomes involved with the early Nigerian nationalist movement and, locally, the formation of a Women's Union. Seen from a child's perspective, none of this is the least bit didactic or laboured, but it makes for fascinating social history all the same. Much of Ak© reads like poetry, with vivid descriptions and often lyrical language, but it is never slow moving or at all difficult. Autobiography is not a genre I'm that keen on, but this is a definite exception.

Some consider him Africa's most distinguished playwright, as he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, the first African so honored.
Soyinka was born into a Yoruba family, specifically, an Egba family in Abeokuta, Nigeria in 1934. He received a primary school education in Abeokuta and attended secondary school at Government College, Ibadan. He then studied at the University College, Ibadan (1952-1954) and the University of Leeds (1954-1957) from which he received an honours degree in English Literature. He worked as a play reader at the Royal Court Theatre in London before returning to Nigeria to study African drama. He taught in the Universities of Lagos, Ibadan, and Ife (becoming Professor of Comparative Literature there in 1975).
Soyinka has played an active role in Nigeria's political history. In 1967, during the Nigerian Civil War he was arrested by the Federal Government of General Yakubu Gowon and put in solitary confinement for his attempts at brokering a peace between the warring parties. While in prison he wrote poetry which was published in a collection titled Poems from Prison. He was released 22 months later after international attention was drawn to his imprisonment. His experiences in prison are recounted in his book The Man Died: Prison Notes.

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka is the most prominent writer from the African continent and one of the greatest living playwrights in the English language. His plays have been produced by the leading professional and repertory companies and stages in the English-speaking world including the National Theatre in Britain and the Lincoln Center in New York. At the same time, Soyinka has been the most consistent campaigner against civil and human rights violations and abuses, on occasion using his drama, poetry, and essays to speak out powerfully and eloquently in defense of the freedom of ordinary citizens and of the conscience and autonomy of the African continent's writers and intellectuals. Featuring interviews with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Anthony Appiah, and the editor, among others

Wole Soyinka: Exit, pursued by a bear
The Nigerian Nobel laureate's weird memoir recalls a life of protest, exile and farcical political interventions. By Matt Steinglass Print Email Font: S S+ S++ In 1987, the late Allan Bloom, a University of Chicago professor, published one of the defining texts in the neoconservative culture wars of the past several decades, "The Closing of the American Mind." The book was an extended harrumph directed at Bloom's students, whom he accused of embracing a lazy and unexamined cultural and moral relativism. Bloom wrote that his students were unable to respond cogently to the classic problems posed by the relativism they propounded for example, the question of what they would do if, while serving as a British colonial officer in India, they had to decide whether to allow a prominent man's widow to commit suttee, i.e. to be burned to death along with her husband's corpse. The year before, the Nobel Prize in literature had been awarded to the Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka, and it's no coincidence, in a tenor-of-the-times sort of way, that he was the author of the scenario Bloom was referring to, or rather of its greatest artistic representation. In Soyinka's 1975 play, "Death and the King's Horseman," the king (or "Oba") of the Yoruba city of Oyo has died, and his horseman, Elesin Oba, is expected to follow him into the afterlife by committing ritual suicide. The colonial British administrator, Pilkings, bars the ceremony, which he considers barbaric. The result is a tragedy of unintended consequences.
