Wole Soyinka, Africa's first Nobel Laureate in literature, will visit the College on 1-3 April 2001, under the auspices of the AADS Program and the department of Foreign Languages. Soyinka is a Yoruba, proud, patriotic, and progressive, But he is not exclusivist, not pompous, not xenophobic. It is those very qualities, which one could call humanism, that have propelled the Laurate to the forefront of myriad struggles on behalf of the oppressed, within and outside his native Africa. Soyinka's plays are replete with the multifaceted, multiracial tragedy of reality. The list is endless, and it keeps growing. "Dance of the Forests", "The Road Kongi's Harvest", The Trials of Brother Jero", "Madmen and Specialists", "Death and the King's Horseman". His novel, "The Interpreters" remains one of the most poignant narratives expposing the rotten underbelly of the Nigerian neo-colonized intellectual class. It is no wonder that Soyinka resigned from his professorship at the once famed Obafemi Awolowo Universiity, Ile-Ife, out of disgust with the decadent institution. He continues to live a life marked by adventures and adversities, without becoming a pessimist. He could have easily fled the ghetto of the colonized for the gilded skyscrapers of the civilized. But he is too much of a human being to fall into such a trap. that is why he accepted the Noble, not for himself, but for the "world that nurishes [his] being.," for blacks, "locked into an unambiguous condition" whose humanity is not recognized by "a suicidal anachronistic present" and for creative artists who insist on making the workd a better place.

who we are
Wole Soyinka Akinwande Oluwole Soyinka, the Nigerian playwright, poet, novelist, and critic, received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986. He writes of modern West Africa in a satirical style and with a tragic sense of the obstacles to human progress. A member of the Yoruba people, Wole attended Government College and University College in Ibadan before graduating in English in 1958 from the University of Leeds, in England. Upon his return to Nigeria, Wole founded a national theatre, The Masks (later the Orisun Theatre), and wrote his first important play, A Dance of the Forests , for the Nigerian independence celebrations. The play satirizes the fledgling nation by stripping it of romantic legend and by showing that the present is no more a golden age than was the past. In this and other dramas, Wole fuses Western elements with subject matter and dramatic techniques deeply rooted in Yoruba folklore and religion. He uses symbolism, flashback, and ingenious plotting to create a rich dramatic structure. Wole’s works exhibit humor and fine poetic style as well as his gift for irony and satire and for accurately matching the language of complex characters to their social position and moral qualities.

The totalitarian regime in power had confiscated his passport, and nearly two hundred armed police recently had prevented the launching of a new book about the winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize for Literature. Surveillance of the author intensified, and anyone who dared sell his work or biographical materials about him was being persecuted by the authorities. Only a few days before Soyinka would slip out of the country, the Nigerian Union of Journalists received a letter from the police warning that if his name were not removed from a list of speakers at an upcoming conference, the event would be canceled. A Hunger for Justice
Playwright Wole Soyinka Is Driven by His 'Overactive Sense of Right and Wrong'
By Bob Thompson Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, April 27, 2006; Page C01 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. The oak-paneled colloquium room at Harvard's Barker Center is too small for the noontime crowd. Another 25 chairs arrive before the speaker does, but with the body count nearing 100, there still aren't enough seats. Several women in the back corner perch on a table, beneath an outsize portrait of a Harvard notable in academic robes, as the 72-year-old winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize for literature strides in. "Quite simply, Wole Soyinka is Africa's most acclaimed writer," the professor introducing him says. Wole Soyinka, who spent time in a Nigerian prison and years in exile, has used his 1986 Nobel Prize for literature as a platform to fight injustice, such as the atrocities in Darfur.

Soyinka's works are concerned with the tensions between spiritual and material worlds, with beliefs as the underpinnings of social relations, and with individuals' dependence on one another. His widely performed plays often highlight the problems of daily life in Africa; best known are

On Making the Public Personal in Poetry
October 16, 2007 By: Marc McKee Category: Commentaries A few weeks ago at the University of Missouri, I had the opportunity to go and listen to Wole Soyinka, the Nigerian poet, playwright and Nobel Laureate. Even as a poet who believes that the full spectrum of human experience is art’s province, no matter what the actual artist has demonstrably, “authentically” experienced, I’m often troubled by the attempts to represent public suffering and catastrophe, current or historical. Or, more properly, I’m troubled by the fact that such attempts most often fall short of doing justice to human suffering, and instead reduce those concerns to mere reportage or, worse, political sloganeering. So I’m always cheered by finding or being given poems that reveal a quintessentially human aspect. As luck would have it, I had recently been rereading the Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert, who as a teenager fought with the Polish underground against the Nazis and was later, as it says on the dust jacket of his book, Mr. Cogito
