English Martyrs
Those who suffered death in England for the Catholic Faith and for the primacy of the Roman Pontiff, from to . The total number of them is over 600; of these, fifty-four were beatified in and nine more in ; 247 others had their cause of beatification introduced in , and were declared Venerable; the remainder (about 286), though they all died heroically, led such retired and obscure lives that there is very little known about them, which fact has hindered even the introduction of their cause. The following is a complete alphabetical list of all the English Martyrs , under their last names. Those who have been beatified canonized , or declared venerable have separate articles. In a few cases nothing is known of the martyr except his name.

Irish Church Monuments, 1570-1880 In the years 1970-71 , as part of his research for a post-graduate thesis at Edinburgh University, Homan visited churches all over Ireland where he photographed and recorded sculptural wall memorials of the 17 th th and 19 th centuries. Many of these are by Irish sculptors, but a number were ‘imports’ from sculptors in Britain and they include works by many of the major British and Irish of the period. There are monuments by John Bacon, Chantrey, Cheere, Farrell, Flaxman, Foley, Hewetson, Hogan, Kirk, MacDowell, Nollekens, Roubiliac, Rysbrack, Scheemakers, Edward Smyth, Turnerelli, Van Nost, Westmacott, Joseph Wilton and others. Homan’s complete archive of photos and notes is now in the Irish Architectural Archive ( www.iarc.ie ) where it is available. As Homan was principally interested in the monuments as sculpture, he did not record inscriptions, only the names and dates of the deceased. There is an Index to these names in Homan’s book and this Index is reproduced below as an aide to genealogical research.

Summary :
Christmas is both a holiday and a holy day, and from the start it has been associated with poetry, from the song of the seraphim above the magner to the cherished carols around the punch bowl. This garland of Christmas poems contains not only the ones you would insist on finding here ("A Visit from St. Nicholas," "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming," and "The Twelve Days of Christmas" among them) but such equally enchanting though lesser-known Yuletide treasures as Emily Dickinson's "The Savior must have been a docile Gentleman," Anthony Hecht's "Christmas Is Coming," Rudyard Kipling's "Christmas in India," Langston Hughes's "Shepherd's Song at Christmas," Robert Graves's "The Christmas Robin," and happy surprises like Phyllis McGinley's "Office Party," Dorothy Parker's "The Maid-Servant at the Inn," and Philip Larkin's "New Year Poem."
(from the publisher) Selected and edited by John Hollander and J.D. McClatchy

Robert Southwell and the Mystery of W. S.
"The Author to His Louing Cosin Master W. S." Such is the inscription to Robert Southwell's Saint Peter's Complaint . Actually, when the poem was published in 1595 the inscription was simply "The Author to His Loving Cosin." "Master W. S." was added in the 1616 edition, significantly just after Shakespeare's death. For the living, and especially those with Catholic sympathies, being named by an infamous Jesuit would not have been welcome.
