    As I in hoary winter's night stood shivering in the snow,
    Surprised I was with sudden heat which made my heart to glow;
    And lifting up a fearful eye to view what fire was near,
    A pretty babe all burning bright did in the air appear;
    Who, though scorched with excessive heat, such floods of tears did shed,
    As though his floods should quench his flames, which with his tears were fed.
    "Alas," quoth he, "but newly born, in fiery heats I fry,
    Yet none approach to warm their hearts, or feel my fire but I!

    Irondequoit Catholic Communities Robert Southwell SJ
    Celebrating 100 years
    Robert Southwell was born near Norwich, England. His family was Catholic, for although his father, Sir Robert Southwell, conformed to the “new religion” under Elizabeth I, his mother (a Copley), remained staunch In the Catholic faith, as did her relatives the Shelleys of Sussex, ancestors of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Robert therefore had to seek education on the Continent, attendance at an English university being closed to him. He first studied at Douay, then at Paris. Having come into contact with the Jesuits, Southwell asked to join their Society. He was refused in Paris because he was only 17. Disappointed but not thwarted, he walked to Rome and in 1578 was admitted to the Jesuit novitiate. Having undertaken his theological studies, he was ordained a priest in 1584, and named prefect of studies at the Venerable English College in Rome. Robert was a poet: one whose verse was hailed in his own time, and who is still represented in collections of Elizabethan poetry. At heart, however, he was a missionary; even his poetry (and excellent prose) he used with priestly purpose. Therefore, he was happy to be sent to the English mission in 1586.

William Webbe, Discourse of English Poetrie
    Introduction
    Much attention is paid to post-1600 ballads, both traditional and broadsides, but only a few sixteenth century ballads are known. Of the ones which are known, most are not printed with the lyrics and tunes together, so are not very accessible to the casual reader. The goal of this project is to produce a collection of "interesting" ballads from before 1600, containing sheet music and lyrics, both in their original form, and in a form intelligible to a modern listener. Details about the key sources can be found in the bibliography of early music materials ; Livingston and Simpson are excellent secondary sources, while transcriptions of the words to the ballads are found in sources such as Collmann and Lilly, which were printed in the Victorian era.
