Sir Robert Southwell Papers
INTRODUCTION Sir Robert Southwell Papers A substantial volume, bound in the Middle Hill boards of Sir Thomas Phillipps' great collection, the collection contains an important series of letters regarding English Catholicism and the "Popish Plot." The letters, together with retained copies of answers, are addressed to British diplomat Sir Robert Southwell and concern Edward Coleman (who was unjustly accused of treason by Titus Oates) and a subsequent, but related, controversy with the great French Jansenist logician, Antoine Arnauld. In 1678, Titus Oates, a clever and bold perjurer, concocted and published charges that the English Catholics were about to assissinate King Charles II, subvert Protestantism in England, and reconvert the Country to Romanism by fire and sword. The charges were widely believed and caused a great panic. One of the first victims of Oates was Edward Coleman, tried and executed in 1678. He was the first of 35 persons executed on the testimony of Oates. One of the witnesses called in the trial was Sir Robert Southwell (1635 - 1702), a civil servant and diplomatist, whose testimony was generally favorable to Coleman. When it became obvious that the "Popish Plot" was a gigantic fraud, Antoine Arnauld (1612 -1694; then living in the Netherlands) wrote a book in defense of the English Catholics

  • Robert Southwell c. 1561-1595
    English poet and religious writer.
    INTRODUCTION
Before he was martyred at age thirty-three for his activities as a Jesuit priest in Protestant England, Southwell earned a reputation among Catholics as a tireless missionary whose writings sought to provide comfort and to return believers to the church. While working as a missionary in England, he composed prose and poetry focused on the need for faith in times of persecution and the importance of repentance. Southwell's best-known works are the long poem Saint Peters Complaint (1595), the lyric poem “The Burning Babe” (1595), and the prose meditation Mary Magdalens Funeral Teares (1591). His devotional works are unusual for their emphasis on passionate love and the interior state of the believer and are generally regarded as important antecedents to the works of poets such as John Donne, George Herbert, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. He was admired by his contemporaries, including Ben Jonson, for his emotionally charged poetry, and he continues to be revered among Catholics as a saint and martyr.
    Biographical Information
Southwell was born in Norfolk, England, around 1561, to a prominent Catholic family. In 1576 he was sent to France to be educated at the Jesuit school in Douai. He eventually gained admission to the Jesuit novitiate in Rome, and in 1584 he was ordained a priest. Two years later Southwell returned in secret to England as a missionary. At the time, many Catholics were leaving the country because of persecution by the Church of England, and Southwell's presence in England as a Jesuit missionary was considered treason. He spent six years performing his missionary work, hiding or using disguise to avoid arrest. He became chaplain to Anne, countess of Arundel and maintained communication with her husband, Philip, earl of Arundel, who was imprisoned for his faith. During this time Southwell also composed religious poetry and prose, some of which was published in secret. In 1591 he wrote

What's New? Robert Southwell teaches us how to survive
Solange Strong Hertz REMNANT COLUMNIST, Virginia From the new book, The Passion of the Church, by Solange Hertz In the face of what looks like unprecedented crisis a good thing to do is to pick up the nearest history book and start reading in the presence of God. As the ancient Preacher said, “What is it that hath been? The same that shall be. What is it that hath been done? The same that shall be done. Nothing under the sun is new, neither is there any man able to say: Behold this is new. For it has already gone before in the ages that were before us” (Eccles. 1:9-10). The past isn’t just prologue, but the very pre-enactment of the present and the future. People, especially the pious, often believe they are facing some dilemma no one has ever faced before. That’s because most of them don’t live more than 80 years, and a third of that had to be spent in sleeping just to keep going. And people forget. Even when they remember, they are tied to their senses and all the confusing momentary data these relay to mind and passions for tabulation. It’s normal to draw conclusions relating only to the immediate surroundings. The devil, on the other hand, never forgets. His life span is forever, and he never sleeps. Being pure spirit he is furthermore unimpeded by matter in his thought process, and his will is set undeniably in one direction – “seeking someone to devour.” Instantly present wherever he acts, he has had thousands of years in which to study us, noting with satisfaction that human nature never changes. He better than anyone knows that man doesn’t “evolve.” This means he can use the same tricks on us over and over. When we fall for them, often as not he has persuaded us that we are confronted with a situation for which no rules have yet been worked out, and that the solution is all up to us.

SOUTHWELL, ROBERT (1561?-1595). —Poet, b. at Horsham St. Faith's, Norfolk, of good Roman Catholic family, and ed. at Douay, Paris, and Rome, he became a Jesuit, and showed such learning and ability as to be appointed Prefect of the English Coll. In 1586 he came to England with Garnett, the superior of the English province, and became chaplain to the Countess of Arundel. His being in England for more than 40 days then rendered him liable to the punishment of death and disembowelment, and in 1592 he was apprehended and imprisoned in the Tower for three years, during which he was tortured 13 times. He was then put on trial and executed, February 22, 1595. He was the author of St. Peter's Complaint and The Burning Babe, a short poem of great imaginative power, and of several prose religious works, including St. Mary Magdalene's Teares, A Short Rule of Good Life, The Triumphs over Death, etc.

Saint Robert Southwell - Jesuit Saint
by Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J. Being three years in prison, he finally insisted that he should be tried or freed. In other words, it was a request he made, 'either put me on trial or get me out of prison', so they said, "all right." They put him on trial and they found him guilty and he was condemned to death because of his priesthood. The opposition didn't even attempt to disguise his martyrdom on political grounds. He was hanged and drawn – that means cut into pieces and quartered into four pieces on February the 21st, 1595, which has, over the centuries remained his feast day, February 21st. Remember the time of his writing, you retrace for today and you have to have a dictionary to sometimes decipher just what the English word means, but I think Southwell is remarkably clear ever for 2Oth century Americans. "As I in awry winter's night stood shivering in the snow, surprised was I with sudden heat which made my heart to glow. And lifting up a fearful eye to youth, to view what fire was near. A pretty babe all burning bright did in the air appear. Who scorched with excessive heat such floods of tears did shed. As though his flood should quench his flames with which his fears were fed.

Southwell was born in Horsham near the city of Norwich, on the site of St Faith monastery, whose monks had been dispossessed by his grandfather, Sir Richard Southwell. He was the youngest son of Richard Southwell in this old East Anglian family. His mother was Bridget Copley, daughter of a wealthy Sussex landowner. He grew up during the first part of the reign of Elizabeth I , when pressure upon English Catholics to conform to the newly established Church of England was being steadily increased. In 1576 he was secretly sent abroad to be educated at the Jesuit college of Douai in the Spanish Netherlands. He also studied at Paris. Having decided to enter the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), he travelled to Rome and was received into the Jesuit noviceship in 1578 and was ordained a priest in 1584. Southwell returned in 1586 to an England where persecution of Catholics had been intensified; a law of 1585 had made it high treason for any priest ordained abroad to enter England. Southwell spent six years in London and the neighbouring counties, eluding pursuit by taking shelter in the houses of supportive Catholics, including the Countess of Arundel. During this time he composed several works both in prose and verse, which enjoyed a wide but secret circulation. It is more than likely that he was known and read by the playwright
