About Gary Soto's When Mexicans Begin Jogging
Lace Up Your Jogging Shoes!
The Mexican and the American Dream: Gary Soto's "When Mexicans Begin Jogging"
When readers get their first taste of Gary Soto's poetry they must savor its authentic seasoning of ethnic spice Soto's Mexican voice is distinctly clear. In "Mexicans Begin Jogging" the audience is treated to a wide range of
flavorful vehicles of comedy that are quintessential to Soto's writings: identity, imagery, and irony all rich with individualistic stoicism and deep-rooted heritage. But for the author's narration to be fully appreciated, the audience must understand the situations and sensations that surround the Mexican-American livelihood and must foremost explicate his texts from a
sociological perspective.
"Mexicans Begin Jogging" begins by placing the reader into the shoes of the author, or in this case, the work boots. Soto is working the factory's press, as he did in his youth; an industrial job not uncommon for illegal immigrants whom have come to in pursuit of a better lifestyle. So when 'La Migra' (Spanish slang for the border patrol) show up everyone must run to escape possible deportation. That is, everyone except Soto. His boss commands him to jump the fence, like the others, and run, but he is unconvincing. He eventually must pay him to flee. This is the first point of conflict in the
poem.

Throughout the autobiographical narrative written by Gary Soto, many different literary elements are used to recreate the experience of his guilty six-year old self. Different elements such as contrast, repetition, pacing, diction, and imagery. Soto narrates this story as a young boy at a time when he seems to be young and foolish, Soto foolmaking mistakes, but at the same time hoping to learn from them. Soto uses each of these devices to convey different occurrences in the narrative. Contrast is used when Soto compares himself to Eve, a biblical character, when God punished her for stealing an apple from a sacred garden. Also in the first line of the story Soto explains he “knew enough...

Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto illustrated by Ed Martinez
December 23, 2007 by inspirechildren Too Many Tamales
by Gary Soto
illustrated by Ed Martinez Maria is helping her mother make tamales for Christmas dinner. When her mother goes out of the room Maria sees her mothers beautiful ring and slips it on. Forgetting to take it off Maria continues working with the stick masa dough. Then she helps her mother and father make the tamales. Later when Maria is playing with her three cousins she remembers the ring that has now disappeared from her hand. In an attempt to find the ring Maria and her cousins eat ALL 24 tamales that were made! But they find nothing. Maria finds her mother is wearing the ring when she goes to confess about the ring and the tamales. Everything is forgiven, more tamales are made and everyone has a fun Christmas (and four little kids have tummy aches). This story is sweet. Even though Maria get herself in trouble and she feels bad, the family is able to laugh and all is forgiven. It seems perfectly realistic and has a happy ending.

Like many Mexican Americans in Fresno, Sotos parents and grandparents had once worked as farmworkers in the surrounding countryside. Although both of his parents were American born, their Mexican heritage remained a vital influence in their home. When Sotos father was killed in a factory accident when Gary was five, his mother was forced to struggle to provide for the family. For young Gary, survival took precedence over any dreams of writing. Soto tells interviewer, Jean W. Ross, I dont think I had any literary aspirations when I was a kid. In fact we were pretty much an illiterate family . . . So my wanting to write poetry was a sort of fluke. ... Order Buried Onions Order other books by Soto, Gary

Happy Birthday, Gary Soto
Today is poet Gary Soto's birthday. Dip into Soto’s poetry for young people with the poem, “Ode To My Library” from Neighborhood Odes (Harcourt, 1992) which is almost a short story it shares so many details about a small town library. Its description of the physical space of the library mentions the rooms, the books, the globe, the maps, the fish tank, the pencil sharpener, etc. Another wonderful collection of Soto’s poetry is Canto Familiar (Harcourt, 1995) which includes 25 poems dealing with experiences of Mexican American children growing up in the United States. These poems are written with lively voices that beg to be read aloud.
Gary Soto’s collection, A Fire in My Hands (Harcourt, expanded edition 2006), includes rich, descriptive poems as well as the short author insights that are offered at the beginning of each poem, so helpful to budding poets. For middle school students, Soto has created a set of poems woven together to tell a story about a friendship between two boys, (Putnam 2002) and a sequel
