Oranges
The first time I walked
With a girl, I was twelve,
Cold, and weighted down
With two oranges in my jacket.
December. Frost cracking
Beneath my steps, my breath
Before me, then gone,
As I walked toward
Her house, the one whose
Porch light burned yellow Night and day, in any weather. A dog barked at me, until She came out pulling At her gloves, face bright With rouge. I smiled, Touched her shoulder, and led Her down the street, across A used car lot and a line Of newly planted trees, Until we were breathing Before a drugstore. We Entered, the tiny bell Bringing a saleslady Down a narrow aisle of goods. I turned to the candies Tiered like bleachers, And asked what she wanted - Light in her eyes, a smile Starting at the corners Of her mouth. I fingered A nickle in my pocket, And when she lifted a chocolate That cost a dime, I took the nickle from My pocket, then an orange

192 pages Marisa Rodriguez is a Latina with a hot temper. She goes to a rough school and is accustomed to solving problems with her fists. This is actually how she meets the boy who will end up changing her life. When Marisa gets into a fistfight with Roberto, the slimy boyfriend of her best friend Alicia, Roberto's nerdy math tutor Rene is there to break it up. During the scuffle, Marisa and Rene accidentally pick up each other's cell phones. Upon exchanging them, it is evident that there is an undeniable chemistry between the two. They begin dating and become inseparable. Marisa ends up transferring to Rene's school and uses her aunt's address on her registration. They audition to be in Romeo and Juliet together, begin a fitness plan (Marisa wants to lose weight and Rene is determined to gain muscle), and each desire a personality makeover (Marisa would like to stop reacting so violently, while Rene wishes to be cooler). Because their attitudes and personalities are so different, it's understandable that Marisa and Rene must deal with certain conflicts and pressures in their relationship. These are the kinds of problems that all teenagers will face at some point in their lives. As a result, readers will be able to relate to this young couple quite well; they will want them to succeed and be happy with each other.

CANTO FAMILIAR by: Gary Soto (Hispanic/Latino(a) Literature)
Bibliography: Soto, Gary. 1995. CANTO FAMILIAR. Ill. Nelson, Annika. Orlando, FL: Harcourt ISBN 0152000674
Summary
CANTO FAMILIAR is a collection of twenty-five poems by Gary Soto celebrating memories of his childhood, familiar things that bring memories of school, home and friends to all of us. Many of the poems are interlingual using the Spanish language to add color and authenticity to the poetry relating more specifically to the Mexican culture.
Critical Analysis
Reviews:
Horn Book Guide: In this companion volume to the widely acclaimed Neighborhood Odes, Soto continues his reveries in poems that illuminate the minutiae of everyday childhood experience. Some refer specifically to his own Mexican-American boyhood, while most describe moments that will spark recognition in any child. Accompanied by colorful illustrations, the poems are marked by short, point-blank phrasing and unrhymed vernacular.
Kirkus Reviews: This humorous, tender collection of 25 poems and full-color linocuts about the daily life of Mexican-American children is a companion book to Soto's Neighborhood Odes (1992). Invoking ordinary domestic and community incidents, it's a fine introduction not only to poetry but to Chicano culture. In ``Papi's Menudo,'' a father enjoys a favorite dish; the narrator of ``Music for Fun and Profit'' gets paid not to play an instrument; and ``My Teacher in the Market'' explores the amazement of a child upon seeing a teacher outside of class. The poems are generally descriptive rather than abstract, more concerned with communicating feelings than with literary style, and most are free verse, without regular cadence or rhyme scheme. Nelson debuts with sceneshomey, comfortable, brightthat make the book even more accessible.

Soto began writing poems in 1974 while studying geography in college. He was inspired one day, while working on a te / My stepfather was drinking Jack Daniel’s /…The trouble with you. Soto also noticed that many poets wrote about places where they grew up or places, which inspired them; for example James Wright wrote about his home of Ohio and West Virginia and Gary Snyder wrote of the Sierra Nevada and Japan where he studied Zen Buddhism and the pacifistic ways . This poem therefore explores the theme of hope. planned a campaign to end poverty nationwide by rallying in Washington D. Reluctant at first, he gave up his study of geography and decided to become a poet after reading Edward Field’s poem “Unwanted”, in which he talks of how he wanting recognition and love. He enjoyed writing poems about his past, which has remained a source for his works. They demanded bilingual education in Chicano schools and Chicano studies in Universities and insisted on Chicano only organizations. Themes Soto’s poetry is largely autobiographical and his themes stem from his Mexican-American heritage and his impoverished life in the San Joaquin Valley. Imagery is used to show Soto’s admiration of his favorite baseball player, “It was a figure-Hector Moreno/Quick and hard with turned muscles, /His crouch the one I assumed before an altar/ Of worm baseball cards, in my room.
