    Communicating with the writer:
Gary Soto really appreciates letters from students and fans. But because of his writing and travel schedule, he cannot answer individual letters. He is more than willing, however, to answer letters from students provided that they arrive together in a large envelope (not individually). In fact, he encourages teachers to have their students write as a classroom. Sadly, Mr. Soto cannot answer letters regarding school projects on his work. It is up to every student to do his or her homework alone.

Gary Soto reminds me of Mark Twain who also used his own boyhood experiences on which to base his many books and characters. The Central Valley of California is central to the action in many of Soto's books. The streets and neighborhoods of Fresno, California, are an integral part of his writing. He has said, "For me streets have always mattered. I conjure up inside my head an image of our old street in south Fresno." Owing much of his successful writing to his childhood and teenage years as a Mexican-American in a Chicano district of California, Gary Soto’s works are primarily based off his own experiences. His works reflect the adversities of his ethnicity, poverty, and destitution throughout his youth. He has written poems, novels, short stories, and there are many collections of his works. Soto was even the youngest American poet to have himself and his works included in the Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry. Gary Soto was born in Fresno, California in 1952. He grew up there in a Chicano community in the San Joaquin Valley. When Soto was just five years of age, his father was killed in a factory accident, thus leaving his widowed wife with three children: Gary, his older brother, Rick, and his younger sister, Debra. His family did not have books and was not expected or encouraged to read. He survived life in the community, though it was very difficult. Even as a child and teenager, Soto displayed dignity amidst poverty and proved that a poor, Mexican-American could amount to something great. Soto’s grandparents had emigrated from Mexico, making Soto roughly half-Mexican. His ethnicity influenced his writing and he gathered many of his ideas from his countless experiences and exploits as a child.

Soto lives with his wife and daughter in Berkeley, California. Gary Soto's favorite food is frijoles (beans). Here's a recipe for your family to try! Frijoles
    • 2 1/3 cups dried black beans 1 large onion 1 large green bell pepper 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 or 3 bay leaves 1 tsp. salt
Rinse beans. In a 4-quart heavy saucepan, cover beans with cold water and soak for one day. Bring soaked beans to a boil in water, adding more water, if necessary, to cover beans by about 1 1/2 inches. Simmer beans, partly covered, over low heat for 1 hour, or until beans just start getting tender but are not falling apart. Chop onion and bell pepper and stir into beans along with vinegar, bay leaves, and salt. Simmer beans, partly covered, for 2 to 3 hours, until they are very tender. Remove bay leaves. You can eat the beans hot, but they're even better if you let them cool and then refrigerate them for a day or so before eating.
