Sophocles, Ancient Greece
In Sophocles's play, Oedipus unwittingly kills his father and marries his mother, Jocasta. After Jocasta kills herself, Oedipus blinds himself by sticking her golden brooches through his eyes while crying,"Wicked, wicked eyes! You shall not see me nor my shame- Not see my present crime. Go dark, for all time blind to what you should have never seen" 460-370 BCE
Hippocrates
Hippocrates's humor theory asserted that one could be "rebalanced by bloodletting, blistering, purging by vomiting or anal purgatives, or other potions that would cleanse the body." 200 BCE-200 CE
During the Epic Period in India, Hindu mythology developed. In one myth, Soordas, a devotee of Lord Krishna, saw Lord Krishna, and, in order to preserve the wonderful sight in his mind, he enucleated both his eyes. Soordas literally means "blind disciple." First Century BCE
The story of Cybele and Attis was portrayed by the Roman poet Catullus. After having been unfaithful to Cybele, he "Lopped off the load of his loins with a sharp flint." This example was followed by priests and other devotees in the Day of Blood festival to honor Attis, March 24.

Sophocles
(c.496-406BC) Together with Euripides and Aeschylus, Sophocles is considered the greatest playwright of Ancient Greece. He was born in Colonos near Athens, his father was a wealthy armour maker and he got a thorough education. His friends and associates were influential people, amongst them Herodotus and Pericles.
At 28 he won the first prize in a dramatic competition, defeating Aeschilus, and was to win 20 other first prizes in his life, as well as many other.
Of Sophocles' best known tragedies are Antigone, Oedipus Rex and Electra. He often wrote plots about people's destinies and the consequenses of their actions. He liked the ideal, and wanted to show his characters as people should be and act.
He introduced a third actor on stage, increased the choir from 12 to 14 individuals, wrote more complicated plots and liked to write about religious and moral themes. He was very prolific and wrote over 120 plays.
Sophocles lived for more than 90 years; there is a story that tells us that his children were beginning to get tired of waiting for their in-heritance and tried to declare him senile at the areopagus. He then read his new play Oedipus Colonus aloud, and the court ruled that there was no way he was losing it.
"The greatest griefs are those we cause ourselves"

Volume II contains Oedipus at Colonus (the climax of the fallen hero's life), Antigone (a conflict between public authority and an individual woman's conscience), The Women of Trachis (a fatal attempt by Heracles' wife to regain her husband's love), and Philoctetes (Odysseus's intrigue to bring an unwilling hero to the Trojan War). ‘Antigone’ not the same ol’ Sophocles
Josh Purtle Published Friday, December 7, 2007 Your Name Your Email Friend's Name Friend's Email Message Submit Close A woman in broken overalls points a rifle up, fires and watches as a bloodied and stuffed squirrel drops to her feet. Waxing philosophic, she wonders aloud where squirrels go after they die. “Hillbilly Antigone,” written by Chicago playwright Rick Sims, is a modernized mock-up of its namesake Greek tragedy, dubiously set in the banjo- and rifle-infested hills of Kentucky. King Creon’s Appalachian analog, Creon (pronounced CRAY-uhn) Waller (Brian Hastert DRA ’09) is waging a sort of private holy war against the Flick family. From the pulpit he preaches anti-industrialization, citing the Flicks, who work for the local railroad, as examples of progressive devilry while his son courts Antigone Flick (Brooke Parks DRA ’08) behind his back. The framework of Sophocles’ tragedy translates rather well to this American setting, and Sims sacrifices very little in the transition. Grandma Tiresias (Ji-Youn Chang DRA ’08) stands in for the blind prophet, screeching in tongues during church services; the Olympians are replaced by a Christian God with the same perverted sense of humor. The result is a surprisingly faithful and relevant retelling, a play that stands firmly independent of its ancient Greek inspiration.

Ajax
Sophocles
Ajax is the earliest (maybe) Sophoclean play still in existence. He allegedly said that during this period he was trying to write like Aeschylus.
Antigone

Creon, the king of Thebes, forbids the burial of those who rebelled against his rule. Antigone, soon to marry Creon's son, disobeys this edict to bury her brother Polyneices.

It is extremely difficult to read this play without thinking of the middle portion of Aeschylus' trilogy.

The best general introduction to the play is C. Segal's Oedipus Tyrannus: Tragic Heroism and the Limits of Knowledge (New York, 1993). Scholars disagree on whether the child was left out to die, as is the norm in myth, or to be picked up by someone else, as was common in the Middle Ages [a curious ritual of adoption]. If the latter, the child would have been reared as a slave.) The shepherd instead gave the child to a shepherd from neighboring Corinth, where the baby was raised as the son of Polybus and Merope, king and queen of Corinth. (Compare Herodotus' story of the birth of Cyrus.
