Production The setting of the Antigone , as in the case of most Greek tragedies, does not require a change of scene. Throughout the play the skene with at least one door represents the facade of the royal palace of Thebes. Even when the poet shifts the audience's attention to events in the plain and the cave in which Antigone was entombed, there is no shift of scene. These events are reported by minor characters (here, a guard and a character specifically called a messenger) rather than enacted before the audience (245-277;1192-1243). Interior action is also reported by a messenger to characters on-stage for the benefit of the audience. The suicide of Eurydice, which takes place inside the palace, is reported to Creon (and to the audience) by a second messenger (1279-1318). The messenger speech eliminates the need for scene changes, which, due to the limited resources of the ancient theater, would have been difficult and awkward. Sophocles , like Aeschylus and Euripides , made a virtue of the necessity of this convention of the ancient theater by writing elaborate messenger speeches which provide a vivid word picture of the offstage action.

The career of Sophocles, one of the three great tragic dramatists of ancient Greece, the other two being Aeschylus and Euripides, spanned the period of greatest political and cultural achievement in Athens. According to tradition, Sophocles wrote 123 plays and won 24 victories in the city's annual dramatic contests. Of these, only seven tragedies are preserved in full, but they are sufficient to reveal the playwright's genius. Sophocles' tragedies are usually regarded as the high point of Attic drama.
The seven extant plays are Antigone Oedipus Tyrannus or Oedipus Rex (Oedipus the King), Electra Ajax Trachiniae (Maidens of Trachis), Philoctetes , and Oedipus at Colonus (produced posthumously in 401 BC). Also preserved is a large fragment of the

    Setting
The drama begins at dawn, after a night in which there has been a war in Thebes between armies led by the two sons of Oedipus. Keep in mind that the Greek theater was in the open air, and that the first performances of the day would begin at daybreak. Thu s, imagine that the time of day of the setting would be identical to the performance time.
As you read the first scene, consider the gravity of the city's condition and how aware Antigone seems of it. Throughout the play, Antigone and Creon will talk much about friends and enemies. Think about what each means by these terms. In general, Antigone and Creon tend to use the same words but mean different things by them. For example, consider Antigone's re ference to being a "traitor" (57). This is a political term; does Antigone mean a traitor to the city, or to something else? Compare with Creon at 580. Why does Antigone assume that Creon's order is directed against her and Ismene? When Creon appears later, consider whether his conduct and language in fact supports her assumption.

    Sophocles (496 B.C. - 406 B.C.)
Sophocles, one of the greatest dramatists of the Athenian golden age, was born near Athens in about 495 B.C. His father was a wealthy merchant, and he enjoyed an aristocratic education in the arts. As a young man, his skills in music and dancing were such that he was chosen to lead a choir of boys at the celebrations of the victory over the Persians at Salamis. Sophocles' first performance as a playwright, at the age of twenty-eight, was at the City Dionysia of 486 B.C., in which he took first place in a victory over Aeschylus. He went on write over 120 more plays, which won eighteen first-place awards and in many of which he performed himself. Unfortunately, only seven of his tragedies survive, among which are the three Theban plays - Oedipus Rex Antigone , and Oedipus at Colonus - as well as Electra and Ajax . Of these

    http://www.crystalinks.com/sophocles.html
Sophocles (early 5th century BCE - 406 BCE) was an ancient Greek playwright, dramatist, priest, and politician of Athens. He was also a general for the Athenian Empire in the Peloponnesian Wars, and during his service he led the battle against the Peloponnesian Island of Samos. He is sometimes known as the Attic Bee for the "sweetness of his productions." Sophocles is the second, chronologically, of the three great Greek tragedians; he was several decades younger than Aeschylus and a decade or so older than Euripides, and was often in competition with both in dramatic contests. The year of his birth is contested, with 488 BCE, 495 BCE, and 496 BCE each having advocates. 495 BCE however is preferred by most eminent historians. He is most noted for his prolific playwriting. He wrote 123 plays; in the dramatic competitions of the Festival of Dionysus (where each submission by one author consisted of four plays), he won more first prizes (around 20) than any other playwright, and there is no record of his ever having ranked below second place. Many scholars, including Aristotle, considered Sophocles to be the greatest playwright in ancient Greek theatre. However, of the hundreds of works he produced in his lifetime, only seven tragedies survive in their complete forms, along with around half of a satire play.

The 1502 Aldine is the first printing in Greek of the fifth century B.C. tragedian Sophocles. It was valued as an accurate text through the early twentieth century. In this publication Aldus describes a new organization: "As we sat in a semi-circle at the fire in the cold of this winter with our fellow New Academicians [it was determined that] when I . . . printed Sophocles' seven tragedies in small format I [should] publish them out of our New Academy." Its members were to speak only classical Greek to each other; anyone who failed to do so would be fined until enough had been collected for a party, at which time the Academicians would "entertain [themselves] grandly and not in the style reserved for the printers, but in a fashion worthy of men who are already dreaming of the [New Academy]." Bergen, Norway, 25-26 August 2007 The Working Group on Southern Ocean Physical Oceanography and Cryosphere Linkages (SOPHOCLES) is sponsored by the WCRP/SCAR Climate and Cryosphere project. Its focus is on understanding how well the current generation of models represent the interaction between the cryosphere and the Southern Ocean. The inaugural meeting will be held in Bergen, Norway August 25-26, prior to the Polar Dynamics meeting. Anyone with an interest in this topic is invited to attend. The WorkShop co-chairs are Siobhan O'Farrell, CSIRO, Aspendale, Australia and Ilana Wainer (wainer@usp.br), University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Please register here , or send an email to Siobhan.O'Farrell@csiro.au if you plan to attend. For more information, download the SOPHOCLES poster (6330KB) The group's first aim is to verify models against the latest available observations and use the observations to constrain the choice of parameterizations used by different groups. Many Cryospheric interactions are not represented in current global climate models and need different parameters to better represent the properties of Southern ocean sea ice. The project aims to develop new parameterizations of these cryospheric processes for use in global models or directly include these processes in regional focussed studies. The project's main investigative questions are:-
