Cancer Ward by Alexander Solzhenitsyn
Cancer Ward . Our Russian chapter in 11th grade World History class went a few Czars, some sort of revolution, Stalin killed a bunch of people, communism is bad, the end. When I read that Cancer Ward is a metaphor for Soviet culture, I knew I would be missing some layers here. On the level I did read it, I found it stunning. The text was sparse and elegant, much more 19th century than 20th. He managed to convey the claustrophobia of the hospital without stifling the reader. And in the one scene that slid into I-will-use-this-character-to-espouse-my-views-on-communism, he manages to make it brief and less heavy handed than it could have been. hundred books Index

A Day in the Life of Alexander Solzhenitsyn
Russia's environmental resources are being "plundered" and the current government has only made the problem worse, says Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the 81-year-old Nobel Prize winner. In a newspaper column last week, the writer criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for abolishing the country's environmental protection and forestry agencies and shifting their responsibilities to the extraction-happy Natural Resources Ministry. Enviros are also protesting a plan that came to light last week that would let Japan ship radioactive waste from Europe to Japan through Russia's northern seas.

Nobel Lecture in Literature 1972
Alexander Solzhenitsyn
J
ust as that puzzled savage who has picked up — a strange cast-up from the ocean? — something unearthed from the sands? — or an obscure object fallen down from the sky? — intricate in curves, it gleams first dully and then with a bright thrust of light. Just as he turns it this way and that, turns it over, trying to discover what to do with it, trying to discover some mundane function within his own grasp, never dreaming of its higher function. S o also we, holding Art in our hands, confidently consider ourselves to be its masters; boldly we direct it, we renew, reform and manifest it; we sell it for money, use it to please those in power; turn to it at one moment for amusement — right down to popular songs and night-clubs, and at another — grabbing the nearest weapon, cork or cudgel — for the passing needs of politics and for narrow-minded social ends. But art is not defiled by our efforts, neither does it thereby depart from its true nature, but on each occasion and in each application it gives to us a part of its secret inner light. B ut shall we ever grasp the whole of that light? Who will dare to say that he has DEFINED Art, enumerated all its facets? Perhaps once upon a time someone understood and told us, but we could not remain satisfied with that for long; we listened, and neglected, and threw it out there and then, hurrying as always to exchange even the very best — if only for something new! And when we are told again the old truth, we shall not even remember that we once possessed it.

A Struggle Against Oppression – Solzhenitsyn’s Literary Masterpiece
Jan 07 '03 (Updated Jan 18 '03)
Pros
simple, thought-driven story from a refreshing, unique viewpoint.
Cons not all readers may appreciate this book The Bottom Line A distinctive, thought-provoking work of literature. Full Review One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich has gained reputable status as a classic work of literature, and even allowed the author to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Written under communist rule, the story itself was a milestone, breaking new ground in Russian literature by being one of the first published stories to appear describing the conditions in which workers in Communist labor-camps endured. Although it may have been treated with partial censorship by the author himself, it is remarkable that this piece of literature was even published in the pages of Novy Mir in 1962 under Soviet rule by Krushchev. The topics addressed in this book were previously taboo, with the book discussing how the labor camp operated in Russia, the unfair imprisonment of suspected traitors and the extensive use of labor-prison camps under Soviet control.

Alexander Isayevich Solzhenitsyn Biography
About 5 pages (1,399 words) Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Summary
Name: Alexander Isayevich Solzhenitsyn Birth Date: December 11, 1918 Place of Birth: Caucasus, Russia Nationality: Russian Gender: Male Occupations: writer
Encyclopedia of World Biography on Alexander Isayevich Solzhenitsyn Although his works were banned in the Soviet Union, the Russian novelist Alexander Isayevich Solzhenitsyn (born 1918) won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1970. Alexander Solzhenitsyn, descended from a family of Cossack intellectuals, was born in Koslovodsk, a resort town in the northern Caucasus, on December 11, 1918, a year after the Bolsheviks had stormed to power throughout Russia. His petit bourgeois family moved to the southern Russian port city of Rostov-on-Don when Solzhenitsyn was a child, and there he grew up. His father, an office worker, died when Solzhenitsyn was still young, and his mother, a schoolteacher, brought the boy up. He studied at the University of Rostov, majoring in physics and mathematics, and received a degree in 1941. Military Service and Imprisonment In 1941 Solzhenitsyn's life changed drastically. After the Germans attacked the Soviet Union in June 1941, Solzhenitsyn was drafted into the Red Army as a private and was sent to artillery school. He was "a spare man with dark, intense eyes and a brooding, lined face." After his graduation from the artillery course in 1942, Solzhenitsyn became commander of an artillery battery, serving with distinction and almost continuously at the front for three years.....years. Wounded several times, he was twice decorated for bravery. Toward the war's end Solzhenitsyn, now a captain, commented derogatorily about Stalin's conduct of the warreferring to him as "the whiskered one"in a letter to a friend. He was arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison.
