October November 1999 Freewheeling the Details:
This article appeared in the November/December 1999 issue of Poetry Flash . Gary Snyder, poet, environmental activist, Zen Buddhist, and UC Davis professor, recently celebrated the publication of The Gary Snyder Reader, (617 pages, Counterpoint, $35.00 cloth), the major selected volume of his essays, travel journals, letters, poems, and translations. The collection gathers poems from his first book, Riprap , to the Pulitzer Prize-winning Turtle Island (1975), through No Nature (finalist for the National Book Award, 1992) and the epic poem cycle Mountains and Rivers Without End (1996). That year, Gary Snyder, author of sixteen books, and longtime resident of the South Yuba River watershed in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in Northern California, was honored with the Bollingen Poetry Prize and the Robert Kirsch Lifetime Achievement Award/Los Angeles Times. (The Bay Area Book Reviewers Awards had presented him with its equivalent years ago.) This year, his old friend Peter Coyote, actor, conservationist, activist, and Zen practitioner, also celebrated the paperback publication of his personal memoir of the sixties

Principal Research Interests My group of undergraduate research students is interested in the synthesis and study of organic molecules with unusual electronic structures. In particular, we are interested in probing the limits of classical structure theory by designing and building molecules that choose to leave two π-electrons unpaired, thereby violating the principle of maximum bonding. These "Kekulé biradicals" are both highly colored and magnetic, suggesting the potential for future applications in materials science. But even more important, they constitute a fundamentally new class of organic molecules, and new types of molecules are guaranteed to teach us new things.

The Practice of the Wild by Gary Snyder
Like most Americans, and most people my age, I have a pretty short attention span. Many of the books I read reflect this problem -— I tend to read too many thrillers and mysteries and other fast paced writing that is neat and linear. When I picked up Gary Snyder’s The Practice of the Wild , I found myself adjusting the part of my brain that tends to race ahead and become impatient. His book, which is a series of nine essays on different aspects of humankind and nature, is so thoughtful and deliberate that I tried to savor each paragraph instead of skimming through it. I would recommend reading the essays one at a time, and not all at once as if they were chapters in a book. There is so much information in each essay that it will overwhelm you to read the book in one sitting. I intend to read it again, taking my time with each essay. The tone of the book is not one of wild accusation and frenetic defense of nature as perfect that bombards us from other media. You are not going to get a militant diatribe on the desecration of nature by man, but a look at the complexities of humans and their relationship to nature how nature’s primary definition of “outdoors” sets humans apart from it because we live most of our lives inside, and see the outdoors as separate from our everyday lives. Instead, Snyder writes that we should focus on a second definition of nature, “the physical universe and all it’s properties," which includes humans. When Snyder is writing about the wild, his identification with it seems so intimate, like he is talking about a part of himself and not the “other” that wilderness is for so many of us.

Because it jumps like a skittish horse
and sometimes throws me
Because it is pokey when cold
Because plastic is a sad, strong material
that is charming to rodents
Because it is flighty
Because my mind flies into it through my fingers
Because it leaps forward and backward
is an endless sniffer and searcher,
Because its keys click like hail on a rock
gold under boulders in streambeds, identical seedpods
strong on a vine, or it stores bins of bolts;
And I lose them and find them,
Because whole worlds of writing can be boldly layed out
"delete" so it teaches
of impermanence and pain;
in this world, both foolish, and we have earthly fates,
Because I have let it move in with me
right inside the tent
And it goes with me out every morning
We fill up our baskets, get back home,
Feel rich, relax, I throw it a scrap and it hums.

  • Gary Snyder 1930–
    (Full name Gary Sherman Snyder) American poet, essayist, translator.
    INTRODUCTION
    Snyder is a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet whose work, strongly influenced by Buddhism, deals with the natural world and ecological concerns. Snyder made his poetic debut at the Six Gallery in San Francisco in 1955, at what has come to be known as the "coming out party" for the Beat Generation poets. Although he lived in Japan, studying Zen Buddhism, during much of the Beat period, he has been linked personally and professionally with Beat writers such as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. While much of the Beat writing is characterized by a rejection of literary tradition, Snyder's work embodies the influence of literary giants such as T. S. Eliot, Walt Whitman, and Ezra Pound. In addition to winning the Pulitzer Prize for his 1974 poetry collection, Turtle Island , he has also been honored with the Bollingen Prize for Poetry and the John Hay Award for Nature Writing.
